NBC: We Have a ‘Border Crisis’ on U.S.-Canada Border

March 16, 2023 by Ian Hanchett Leave a Comment

During a report aired on Wednesday’s broadcast of “NBC Nightly News,” NBC News Homeland Security Correspondent Julia Ainsley stated that the surge in crossings along the United States-Canada border is “America’s newest border crisis.”

Ainsley began her report by saying, “Tonight, America’s newest border crisis. This one, up north.”

She added, “The Clinton County Sheriff’s office tells us they’re encountering migrants, mainly Mexicans, illegally crossing over the border from Canada at record levels. Crossings here are almost ten times higher than they were last year, nearly 70,000 crossings over the entire northern border since October.”

Ainsley reported from an area “where Sheriff David Favro (D) says his team recently helped rescue more than 20 migrants, including an elderly woman, from frigid temperatures.” And showed an image of a “family…recently found carrying a baby and a toddler in sub-zero temperatures.”

She added, “Officials say some Mexican migrants believe there’s a better chance they’ll get into the U.S. through Canada and they can fly to Canada without a visa.”

Ainsley noted that while there has been a spike along the northern border, it hasn’t gotten close to the levels along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Host Lester Holt also said there is a “new border crisis” up north.

Reporter confronts WH spox about cartels, and she responds with a whopper about fentanyl: ‘Historic lows’

March 8, 2023 by Chris Enloe Leave a Comment

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre lied Tuesday when confronted about the Biden administration’s handling of the border crisis.

Noting that Mexican cartels kill Americans on this side of the border with drugs, Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy asked Jean-Pierre why Biden is “so comfortable” with the cartels operating in close proximity to the U.S. The question came after a Mexican cartel kidnapped four Americans, killing two of them.

Jean-Pierre responded by claiming “fentanyl at the border” is “at historic lows.”

Because of the work that this president has done, because of what we’ve done specifically on fentanyl at the border, it’s at historic lows — historic levels that we have been able to record a number of personnel working to secure the border because of what we’ve been able to do, seizing that fentanyl. We’ve done it in a historic way. That’s because of what this president has done.

There is, in fact, no good news to report about the trajectory of fentanyl in the U.S.

Fentanyl seizures are breaking records. In 2022 alone, U.S. authorities seized approximately 380 million lethal doses of fentanyl, enough to kill every person in the U.S. — and then some.

Moreover, fentanyl overdose is now the leading cause of death among U.S. adults ages 18-45. The rate of deaths from fentanyl in that age group is nearly two times that of deaths from auto accidents, according to advocacy group Families Against Fentanyl.

Determining exactly how many Americans die from fentanyl each year is difficult. That is because of how the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention categorizes data from synthetic opioid overdoses.

Still, the agency acknowledged the likelihood of what FAF reports.

“If one assumes that the other synthetic narcotics category for those 18-45 is 90% fentanyl, then one can argue that unintentional fentanyl overdose is likely the leading cause in that age group. However, because we don’t have exact numbers of fentanyl deaths for that age category, we cannot say for certain that this is accurate,” a CDC spokesperson told PolitiFact Texas.

It is true that fentanyl seizures are at record levels, but that is because Mexican cartels are emboldened to act with impunity on both sides of the border.

“Joe Biden becoming president is the best thing that ever happened to the Mexican drug cartels,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) argued on Tuesday.

Biden forced to reconsider immigration policy that he ended as border crisis rages on ahead of Title 42 end

March 7, 2023 by Chris Enloe Leave a Comment

The Biden administration is considering restarting a policy detaining migrant families who illegally enter the United States.

When President Joe Biden campaigned for the White House, he promised to reverse many existing immigration policies under the guise of compassion. One of the policies that Biden ended is known as family detention. Under the policy, migrant families would be detained if they illegally entered the U.S., but under Biden, the families are released from detention and tracked.

But as the border crisis rages on, Biden is being forced to reconsider more restrictive policies, including family detention, the New York Times reported.

The policy is being reconsidered now because Title 42, which allows the government to expedite migrant expulsions, is ending in two months.

“No decisions have been made as we prepare for the Title 42 Public Health Order to lift,” the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement. “The administration will continue to prioritize safe, orderly, and humane processing of migrants.”

More from CNN:

One official said the administration is looking at multiple options for how to handle migrant families at the southern border, not all of them involving family detention.

Another source familiar with the deliberations added that among the options discussed are some that wouldn’t involve detaining families in ICE facilities. This source said that family detentions would be limited to a small number of days – an attempt to set the policy apart from the Trump administration’s handling of family detentions.

While the potential policy change is being framed as returning to Trump-era policies, NBC News explained that family detention began as a policy under Barack Obama.

Last month, Biden announced a strict new policy that would disqualify migrants from asylum if they enter the U.S. illegally.

The policy, according to the New York Times, “would allow rapid deportation of anyone who had failed to request protection from another country while en route to the United States or who did not notify border authorities through a mobile app of their plans to seek asylum.” The policy would take effect in May upon the end of Title 42.

The policy was announced after more than 150,000 migrants entered the U.S. in January, a significant decrease from the more than 250,000 who entered in December 2022.
