School district superintendent fired after comments about 'influx' of 'wealthy' Asians into area — and still can get $288,000 buyout for her troubles

June 28, 2022 by Dave Urbanski Leave a Comment

A San Diego-area school district voted Sunday to fire its superintendent after her
racially insensitive comments about an “influx” of “wealthy” Asians into the community, KSWB-TV reported, but Cheryl James-Ward can still receive a year’s salary as a buyout — $288,000.

What are the details?

Ward has been on administrative leave since April after her comments during a San Dieguito Union High School District diversity, equity, and inclusion training session that linked Asian students’ academic performance to what she saw as wealth of Chinese immigrants, the station said.

“Here in San Dieguito we have an influx of Asians from China, and the people who were able to make that journey are wealthy,” Ward said in part, according to a previous KSWB story. “You cannot come to America and buy a house for two million dollars unless you have money.”

The training session was held in response to certain student demographics receiving D and F grades while the percentage of Asian students with low grades wasn’t high, KSWB said in that previous piece.

Speaking to the station in a subsequent interview, Ward claimed certain board members were retaliating against her after she filed a harassment complaint against Trustee Michael Allman.

“I believe Michael Allman and Mo Muir created a situation for a public lynching … and then I was asked to leave,” Ward told KSWB.

Ward’s supporters have called for Allman’s resignation, the station said.

How did Ward react to her firing?

KSWB said Ward responded to her termination Monday via text message: “I heard the news today when I landed in London and was quite surprised. I’ve put my job on the line to make decisions in the best interests of the district, standing against those with nefarious intentions. Sometimes that will cost you your job. I would make the same decisions again because my heart is with kids and our community.”

Ward issued public apologies after her comments, KSWB said, but parents were still angry about her words.

The four remaining board members voted unanimously to terminate Ward’s contract, the station added.

Pricey parachute?

KSWB said since Ward is being terminated without cause, her contract allows her to receive a year’s salary — $288,000 — as a buyout. The station added that Ward has said she would plan to sue if the board fired her.

None of the board members returned KSWB’s requests for comment Monday, the station said.

Maxine Waters vows to 'defy' Supreme Court after Roe v. Wade is overturned

June 24, 2022 by Chris Pandolfo Leave a Comment

U.S. Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) joined an abortion-rights protest outside the U.S. Supreme Court building Friday, where she said that women will “defy” the court after it overturned its landmark Roe v. Wade decision.

“You see this turnout here? You ain’t seen nothing yet,” Waters told Reuters journalists who were livestreaming from the protest. “Women are going to control their bodies no matter how they try and stop us.”

“The hell with the Supreme Court! We will defy them!” she declared.

“Women will be in control of their bodies, and if they think black women are intimidated or afraid, they got another thought coming. Black women will be out in droves! We will be out by the thousands! We will be out by the millions! We’re going to make sure we fight for the right to control our own bodies!”

In a historic 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court overturned its previous decisions in Roe and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, ending all federal protections for abortion.

“The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives,” Justice Samuel Alito wrote for the majority.

The consequence of this decision is that all 50 states will individually decide how to regulate abortions. In pro-life states under Republican leadership, abortion is likely to be heavily restricted or outright banned. Indeed, thirteen GOP-led states have so-called trigger laws banning all or most abortions, which can now go into effect. Missouri was the first state to do so Friday.

Democrat-led states, like Waters’ home state of California, are more than likely to take the reverse course of action and dramatically expand abortion access. In May, after a draft version of Alito’s opinion was leaked to the media, California and New York advanced legislation to expand abortion access and even fund abortions with taxpayer dollars.

Waters vowed that Democrats would take more steps to protect abortion after the court’s ruling.

“We’re going to take every effort and try everything we can to overcome what they have done to us today,” she said.

Earlier at the protest, she said the left would rally women to turn out in the upcoming midterm elections and promised legislation would be forthcoming to protect abortion rights.

“We’re not intimidated. We’re going to fight. We’re not going backwards, we’re going forward. I don’t care what that vote is today, they cannot stop us. We’re going to control our lives,” Waters said.

“We’re going to do everything that we can possibly do. We gonna continue to organize. We’re going to turn out a huge vote of women. We’re going to see if we can get something on the ballot real soon.”

That animal shelter that won't allow pro-gun people to adopt pets? PETA is having none of it: 'What counts is that adopted animals are treated well'

June 17, 2022 by Dave Urbanski Leave a Comment

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has taken issue with a controversial California animal shelter that refuses to let pro-gun people adopt its pets, Fox News reported.

What’s the background?

TheBlaze previously reported on the Shelter Hope Pet Shop in Thousand Oaks and its strict policies against working with certain Second Amendment backers.

“We do not support those who believe that the 2nd amendment gives them the right to buy assault weapons. If your beliefs are not in line with ours, we will not adopt a pet to you,” the shelter states. “If you lie about being a NRA supporter, make no mistake, we will sue you for fraud. If you believe that it is our responsibility to protect ourselves in public places and arm ourselves with a gun — do not come to us to adopt a dog.”

The shelter adds that “if you are pro guns and believe that no background check is necessary, then do not come to us to adopt. We will grill you before you even get an appointment and visit our rescue. If we ask you ‘do you care about children being gunned down in our schools?’ If you hesitate, because your core belief is that you believe teachers need to carry firearms, then you will not get approved to adopt from us. If you foster for us and believe in guns, please bring our dogs and/or cats back, or we will arrange to have them picked up. Shelter Hope Pet Shop in no way will continue to operate if we are even remotely part of the problem. We support teachers, children, and businesses who provide services to the public, but we’ve had enough of all the senseless killing.”

What did PETA say?

Catie Cryar, assistant manager of PETA, told Fox News that the animal rights organization knows Shelter Hope does “good work” and is “sure” it has “the best intentions, but from PETA’s perspective, because there is a homeless animal crisis, what counts is that adopted animals are treated well and cared for and that is the criteria we feel is important.”

‘Fine, keep your money’

Shelter founder Kim Sill told NBC News some people have threatened to stop donating money if she doesn’t drop the gun control inquiry from the pet adoption screening process.

“I say, fine, keep your money,” Sill shot back, according to the network. “If I go out of business, as a result, I go out of business. But I have to do something. And this is the only thing I can do to make the point that mass killings by people armed with guns have to stop.”

Kim SillImage source: YouTube screenshot

Sill — who’s also an actress — added to Fox News that she’s well within her right to discriminate against the pro-gun crowd.

“Adoption facilities like mine turn people down for all kinds of reasons,” Sill told the cable network. “They can turn you down for the kind of dog food you tell them you’re going to use on that dog you want, or the kind of cat litter. I mean, seriously, we are a private nonprofit, and we pride ourselves in trying to find the absolute best homes for the dogs and cats that we can.”

She continued telling Fox News that “adding this
question about gun control, I guess, has stirred up the conversation with those who don’t believe that they should even have to tell me what their situation is. So I think that’s the deal-breaker for most of them.”

Sill added to the cable network that “your views on guns are relevant because, God forbid if you have a stroke, and your wife calls me up and tells me to come to your house and get the dog, I might not feel safe coming to your house, knowing that you are very radically opposed to me thinking it’s not okay for an 18-year-old to have a gun.”

She added to Fox News that she’s received hundreds of death threats about the new policy but said she forgives them.

Killer heat: Man found dead in Death Valley after running out of gas as record temperatures scorch California

June 16, 2022 by Paul Sacca Leave a Comment

A California man was found dead in Death Valley National Park after his car ran out of gas, according to officials. The area has been scorched by record temperatures in the past week.

David Kelleher, 67, was found dead in the park by visitors on Tuesday.

“A crumpled note inside Kelleher’s vehicle said, ‘Out of gas.’ Kelleher had also mentioned being low on gas when contacted by a park ranger May 30 near Dantes View Road,” the National Park Service said Wednesday in a press release.

Kelleher, of Huntington Beach, appears to have been walking from Zabriskie Point toward Furnace Creek after his car ran out of gas.

A park ranger noticed there was one vehicle in the Zabriskie Point parking lot on the morning of June 8. The same park ranger saw the same car in the parking lot on the evening of June 11.

On May 30, a park ranger issued a citation to Kelleher for driving off-road. At the time, Kelleher informed the park ranger that he was low on gas.

Park rangers launched a ground and aerial search for Kelleher, who had not previously been reported missing. However, the search was limited due to sweltering weather.

On June 14, Kelleher’s body was found by park visitors around 2 p.m., a little more than 2 miles from his vehicle. He was only 30 feet from California Highway 190, but his body was obscured by terrain and a mesquite tree.

This is the second fatality at Death Valley National Park this month. After two days of ground and air searches, John McCarry, 69, was found deceased in Panamint Valley on June 1, according to the National Park Service.

In 2021, six people died while hiking in Death Valley National Park. Two people died after falling from cliffs, and four perished from extreme heat.

The National Park Service rangers recommend that in extreme heat, people should wait at the disabled vehicle, rather than attempting to walk for assistance. The National Park Service also advises park visitors not to hike at low elevations after 10 a.m., to stay within a short walk of air conditioning, to drink plenty of water, and to eat salty snacks.

On Friday, Death Valley hit a record-breaking daily temperature of 123 degrees – surpassing the previous high set on the same day in 1921. The mercury spiked again on Saturday when the California desert soared to 122 degrees.

Death Valley holds the record for the hottest temperature on the planet. The Furnace Creek area of Death Valley reached a blistering temperature of 134 degrees on July 11, 1913. Death Valley also recorded a temperature of 130 degrees on August 16, 2020, and June 17, 2021.

Two California police officers slain after responding to stabbing report, officials say

June 15, 2022 by Chris Pandolfo Leave a Comment

Two California police officers were killed Tuesday night after responding to a report of a stabbing in the Los Angeles area, officials said.

The officers were fatally shot at around 5:10 p.m. local time after responding to a call at a motel, Capt. Andrew Meyer of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said at a press conference Tuesday evening. He confirmed that officers confronted a suspect in a motel room and fired their weapons, and the suspect fled the room into a parking lot, where the officers fired again, the Los Angels Times reported.

Two officers and the suspect were hit by gunfire during the exchange, Meyer said. The officers were transported by ambulance to a local hospital but died of their injuries. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

One of the officers was a 22-year veteran of the El Monte Police Department, according to KTLA-TV. The other had been with the police force for less than a year.

The names of the slain officers have not yet been released.

Police have not released specific details of the shooting because an investigation of the facts is ongoing.

The mayor of El Monte did say that the officers were “essentially ambushed,” but Meyer did not provide more information.

“We don’t have all the facts yet,” he said.

The city of El Monte said in a statement it is “saddened and shocked” by the violent deaths of the officers.

“There are no words to describe our grief and devastation by this senseless act as we learned about the passing of two of our police officers. It weighs heavy on our hearts and we are sending our support to their families. We would also like to thank the El Monte community and our surrounding government agencies for the outpouring support we have received in the last few hours,” the City of El Monte and the El Monte Police Department said in a joint statement.

El Monte police captain Ben Lowry, the acting chief of the police department, told reporters Tuesday the officers were “heroes” who made the “ultimate sacrifice.”

“These two men were loved. They were good men. They paid the ultimate sacrifice serving their community, trying to help somebody. … They were murdered by a coward,” Lowry said.

The fallen officers were honored by a procession of law enforcement vehicles on Interstate 10, which traveled from El Monte to the Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center, where the officers were pronounced dead. Flowers and candles have been placed outside the El Monte Police Department as a memorial to them.
