Why Are People Who Should Know Better Beginning to Agitate for a Return to Afghanistan?

August 7, 2022 by streiff Leave a Comment

I don’t think anyone can accuse me of being a simp for Joe Biden. That said, sometimes the right things are done, and we need to give him credit. One of those things is following through on President Trump’s decision to leave Afghanistan.

Even though Biden’s execution of our withdrawal from Afghanistan was an utter dog’s breakfast of failure on every level and demonstrated that the Biden White House, his woke Defense Department, and the “white rage” cult commanding our military forces were not up to any task of any significance (Deputy Secretary of State Claims That the ‘Process Worked’ for the Afghanistan Mission and Everything You Know Is Wrong), the decision was 20 years overdue.

By the time we left Afghanistan, we had been at war there longer than some of the soldiers fighting the war had been alive. So why were we there in the first place? Because the plot to attack America on September 11, 2001, was hatched there by al Qaeda forces in training camps protected by the government. The mission of destroying those camps and removing the government that had protected them was articulated by President Bush in October 2001.

That problem had been solved by the spring of 2002. Then, in April 2002, George Bush gave a speech that laid out an expansive plan for fixing Afghanistan and making it a place where “…peace will be achieved through an education system for boys and girls which works,” and “develop[ing] an economy that can feed its people without feeding the world’s demand for drugs.” That section begins at 23:42 of the video.

Ever since we accomplished the mission of overthrowing the Taliban and routing al-Qaeda out of their camps, I have one question. Now what? What does a win look like when our objective is transforming Afghan society, culture, and economy? How do we know when we’ve done enough? Did anyone really think they could alter a society that treats women like chattel without resorting to repopulating the country with people who were not Afghans? Did anyone consider the possibility that by meddling in Afghan culture and society, particularly at the family unit level, we might be recruiting troops for the Taliban? Did we think that by sending DEA agents to eradicate opium poppies, the only cash crop available in large parts of the country, we might be encouraging farmers to kill us rather than grow kale or quinoa?

In my long-held view, our best play was to leave in 2002 and make it clear that if things started regressing, we’d be back to kill people and break things. I think the CIA whacking long-in-the-tooth, out-of-the-loop al-Qaeda chieftain Zayman al-Zawahiri is a validation of the withdrawal (Al-Qaeda Chieftain Ayman al-Zawahiri Killed by CIA Drone Strike). Yes, the Taliban gave their word they wouldn’t shelter terrorists during the negotiations process, but did anyone really believe it? We located al-Zawahiri, rumor has it that he was ratted out by one of the Taliban factions, and we killed him.

What concerns me now is that I’m reading people who call themselves conservatives who are criticizing Biden because al-Zawahiri showed up in Afghanistan. Give me a break. Of course, terrorists are going to show up there. The question is, what do we do about it? Do we adopt the Bill Clinton strategy of tying ourselves in such a legal knot that we stop ourselves from acting? Because make no mistake about it, al-Qaeda grew in Afghanistan because Bill Clinton and the over-educated cretins in his administration made proactive measures illegal. Don’t take my word for it; read Ghost Wars by Steve Coll; I highly recommend it.

Tonight on Trey Gowdy’s show, he interviewed Wisconsin Republican Mike Gallagher. Gallager is on the House Armed Services Committee and expressed the opinion that al-Zawahiri’s appearance in Kabul showed the failure of withdrawing from Afghanistan in favor of an “over the horizon” presence. The unstated implication was that we needed an on-the-ground presence.

We shouldn’t be more concerned about individual terrorists taking up residence in Afghanistan than Antifa gathering in Portland. We have sufficient intelligence assets to ensure camps don’t form and that the Taliban doesn’t take on a partnership with a terrorist group. If those things do happen, we have the strike capability to solve the problem.

I’m not saying we need to give Biden a pass on the screwed-up stuff he does. He needs to be held to account for the tragi-comic withdrawal from Afghanistan. That said, as we face China in the Pacific, the last thing we need is a needless war that doesn’t have victory conditions. We did that for 20 years. We should’ve learned our lesson.

Doocy Nails Biden on Al-Qaeda Being 'Gone' in Afghanistan

August 2, 2022 by Nick Arama Leave a Comment

The Biden Administration announced that al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri had been taken out in a drone strike on Monday, and that was a good thing.

But some were also raising very good questions about what he was doing in Kabul, not to mention in a home owned by a senior Taliban official, Sirajuddin Haqqani. That raised the greater issue of how the debacle pull-out by Joe Biden from Afghanistan left it open for al-Qaeda to again be on the rise there.

Fox’s Peter Doocy grilled National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby about that issue. Doocy said they weren’t being consistent.

Peter Doocy takes John Kirby to task over President Biden saying Al Qaeda was “gone” from Afghanistan.

KIRBY: “We talked about the fact that Al Qaeda had a presence in Afghanistan but small…” pic.twitter.com/lYDlpZl8X1

— Townhall.com (@townhallcom) August 2, 2022

“You’re saying that you’ve always known that there’s a small number of Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan. President Biden said, ‘what interest do we have in Afghanistan at this point with al-Qaeda gone?’” Doocy asked.

Kirby is claiming the administration said last summer that Al Qaeda was still in Afghanistan. President Biden did not say that. Biden said Al Qaeda was “gone.” pic.twitter.com/hnHF9Wn3TW

— Katie Pavlich (@KatiePavlich) August 2, 2022

Al-Qaeda wasn’t gone, contrary to what Biden said; they were being harbored by the Taliban, to whom Biden gave the country. Kirby scramble to spin for Biden, saying he, Kirby, never denied that they had a small presence there. But Biden said they were gone, and they wouldn’t be able to use the country as a safe harbor again. But they are being harbored there by the Taliban.

Doocy then let loose on that point, “[T]he Taliban was harboring the world’s most wanted terrorist. You guys gave a whole country to a bunch of people that are on the FBI most wanted list. What did you think was going to happen?”

DOOCY: “You guys gave a whole country to a bunch of people who are on the FBI Most Wanted list. What did you think was going to happen?”

KIRBY: “I take issue with the premise we gave a whole country to a terrorist group…” pic.twitter.com/Tb6FW4FdL1

— Townhall.com (@townhallcom) August 2, 2022

Kirby took issue with that. He can take issue with it all he wants, but it’s true. They knew they were pulling out and leaving it to the Taliban terrorists. As Doocy said, “What did they think was going to happen?” It stood to reason that al-Qaeda would then feel free to come back.

Now, yes, they got Zawahiri. But when you give a whole country over to the terrorists, with no one left on the ground anymore, you’re asking for trouble. Because there’s no one there anymore to prevent al-Qaeda from being harbored there–and it isn’t just Zawahiri.

As Townhall’s Katie Pavlich observed, Kirby himself said they were planning attacks from there.

Afghanistan is run and controlled by the Taliban. The Taliban was harboring Ayman al-Zawahiri. This morning, Kirby told CNN Al Qaeda is actively using Afghanistan as a safe harbor to plan attacks. https://t.co/qAJhLzmgv2

— Katie Pavlich (@KatiePavlich) August 2, 2022

So, how is handing over the country to them any kind of guarantee against future attacks, as Biden claimed? It isn’t.

Doocy asked, now that they know that the Taliban isn’t living up to their part of the deal to not let al-Qaeda back, what are they going to do about it?

Doocy: “So, now that you know the Taliban is not living up to the part of the deal that they made with the U.S. to not let Afghanistan be a place that terrorists feel like they can be safe, what are you going to do about it?”

Kirby says the U.S. “won’t telegraph decisions.” pic.twitter.com/2hmetvAvIL

— Curtis Houck (@CurtisHouck) August 2, 2022

Kirby had no longer range answer, just relying on the fact that they killed Zawahiri. But the problem is they can’t guarantee anything, and they should have known they couldn’t trust the Taliban. When the whole country now is effectively a safe harbor to plot from, we have to be right every single time, without anyone there on the ground. That’s the situation we are now left in–and that’s not a good position in which to be.

Republicans in Congress Rightly Question Why al-Zawahiri Was in an Affluent Area of Kabul

August 2, 2022 by Levon Satamian Leave a Comment

Republican members of Congress have raised questions after it came to light that an al-Qaeda leader with a $25 million bounty on his head was apparently living in an affluent area of Kabul, Afghanistan, with his family, saying that Biden’s disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal policy and misplaced trust in the word of Taliban leaders has led to Afghanistan once again being a safe haven for terrorists.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) let his feelings out on Twitter.

Sen. Lindsey Graham tweets at Joe Biden after the alleged assassination of al-Zawahiri

Graham said the threat from al-Qaeda is still there, despite al-Zawahiri’s death:

“Contrary to what President Biden is saying tonight, our ability to combat growing terrorist threats in Afghanistan are on the margins. There are al Qaeda training camps emerging in Afghanistan like before 9/11.”

“As I said when the Biden Administration withdrew all of our forces from Afghanistan, it was only a matter of time before the country became a safe haven for terrorism once again.”

Congressman Mike Waltz (R-FL), a Green Beret who served in Afghanistan, had a couple of questions about the killing. He told Fox News:

”Number one, what was the leader of al Qaeda doing in Kabul?”

“And from what I’m hearing from a number of folks, both in Afghanistan and in the intelligence community, he’s been there for some time. So what did the Taliban promise him? Why did he feel so comfortable to really be out in the open?”

Congressman Michael McCaul (R-TX) praised the killing of the terrorist leader but noted that Biden lied about al-Qaeda’s presence in Afghanistan. He said:

“The American people were lied to by President Biden.”

“Al Qaeda is not ‘gone’ from Afghanistan as Biden falsely claimed a year ago … And worse, the head of al Qaeda, who was one of the masterminds behind 9/11, was given safe harbor in the capitol city of Kabul — just as al Qaeda was given safe harbor there before 9/11. Our chaotic and deadly withdrawal from Afghanistan opened the door for al Qaeda to operate freely inside the country to conduct external operations against the United States and our allies again.”

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said the Biden administration should brief Congress on the killing of al-Qaeda’s terrorist leader:

“To discuss the resurgence of al Qaeda in the region following his disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan.”

These are questions that the Biden administration should be able to answer, and the GOP is doing the right thing by questioning Biden’s statement about al-Qaeda being “gone.”

9/11 Families React After Drone Strike Kills Al Qaeda Leader Ayman al-Zawahiri

August 2, 2022 by Levon Satamian Leave a Comment

In a bit of a poetic justice moment, 9/11 families celebrate as a drone strike takes down Al Qaeda’s terrorist leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, but they note that more needs to be done to hold plotters accountable.

As RedState’s Streiff reported, al-Zawahiri was killed by a CIA drone strike outside Kabul, Afghanistan. President Biden addressed the nation, saying, in part: “Now justice has been done. This terrorist leader is no more.”

Thread: A few important connections between #Iran and #AlQaeda‘s Ayman al-#Zawahiri. Not only does Saif al Adl, a potential Zawahiri successor, reside in #Iran, but Zawahiri’s son-in-law Abd-al Rahman al-Maghrebi also resides in Iran. 1/5 pic.twitter.com/etKt7ucOVR

The grassroots movement, 9/11 Justice, which includes 9/11 survivors, family members who lost loved ones on that tragic day, and first responders, told Fox News Digital that this was a victory. They were grateful to Biden for the latest victory against terrorism.

“This is a significant step forward and is particularly meaningful to the 9/11 community as we continue our years-long battle for justice and accountability.”

The group urged Biden to declassify documents about Saudi Arabia’s involvement in the terrorist attacks on 9/11.

“We urge President Biden to continue to stand with the 9/11 community and all those who seek justice by holding Saudi Arabia accountable for the 9/11 attacks.”

According to Fox News, the national chair of 9/11 Families United, Terry Strada, mentioned that she was “grateful for the commitment of intelligence agencies and the military’s dedication and sacrifices made in removing such threats.”

She added that the Saudi paymasters must pay for the damage they have caused, and Biden must hold them accountable.

“The financiers are not being targeted by drones, they are being met with fist pumps and hosted at golf clubs … If we’re going to be serious about accountability, we must hold everyone accountable.”

A senior advisor to former President George W. Bush, Brad Blakeman, whose nephew was a first responder and was killed on 9/11, said:

“It was a long day in coming. It should have been done a long time ago if we had had the opportunity … What really dismays me is the fact that why is the United States always the one to take action against the terrorists when they’re harbored in sovereign countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan in the case of (Osama) bin Laden? Why are these countries giving safe haven to … these murderers and terrorists … So, while I thank the U.S. for taking such bold action, I’m mad as hell that these countries are harboring these horrible people.”

As Osama bin Laden’s deputy in 1998, then his successor, Ayman al-Zawahiri shaped al Qaeda more than anyone. Zawahiri and bin Laden turned the jihadi movements and targeted the United States, which resulted in the deadliest attack on American soil. We remember and honor the 2,977 killed during the terror attacks.

Politics aside, this is a huge win for the United States of America, as another terrorist, who was part of the 9/11 plot, was put in the ground.
