Jerry Jones Shows His Trust in Ezekiel Elliot as a Starter, Plus a Look at Elliot's Fantasy Football Stock

August 7, 2022 by Levon Satamian Leave a Comment

There were some rumors that Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Pollard would see more snaps, which could mean star running back Ezekiel Elliot would see his workload cut. Now, it seems like Elliot will remain the focal point of the Cowboys’ run game, and Pollard might slide into the third wide receiver role until Michael Gallup returns from injury. Pollard will be utilized split wide to create mismatches, and he will likely see more time as a wide receiver this season, even when Gallup returns.

As the Cowboys traded wide receiver Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, Tony Pollard, and tight end Dalton Schultz will see the bulk of targets. That will also lead to Elliot seeing more targets and more rush attempts. In 2021, Elliot had a down year, finishing with 237 carries for 1,002 yards, and 12 touchdowns in 17 games. Pollard finished the season with 719 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 130 attempts. Pollard also added 337 receiving yards, compared to Elliott’s 287 receiving yards.

Jerry Jones assures Cowboys fans that Elliot will continue to lead the team.

“We gotta have Tony Pollard out there. No, seriously, Zeke’s gotta be our feature, and he is our feature … We can feature him in a lot of different ways. We all recognize what he does in the passing game because of his protection ability. Don’t ever underestimate that especially with Zeke. Zeke takes some tolls when he’s out there as a back blocking. So it’s critical that we make Zeke — because he’s capable of being that — really the focus of what we’re doing. Now then, Pollard, there’s plenty of room for Pollard. There’s plenty of room for Pollard when Zeke’s in there. Pollard needs to get the ball. He has to be the focal point … There is room for Pollard while Zeke is in there.”

Interesting comments from #Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on @nflnetwork, saying that Zeke Elliott “has to be the focus” in the run game. “He has to be the focal point” based on his work in the run game and pass game. “There is room for (Tony) Pollard while Zeke is in there.”

On average, Elliot is being drafted 28th on the fantasy football Sleeper app. Elliot still has top-five running back potential, and anyone taking him that late will likely benefit tremendously from his production. He is currently listed as the 57th player on the draft board. For insurance, it is best to take Zeke and Pollard in case one of them gets injured. But both players are viable options this upcoming season; in order to ease quarterback Dak Prescott’s workload, the Cowboys coaching staff could opt to lean more toward Elliot and Pollard.

Elliot is heading into the second year of his six-year contract, as Pollard is set to become a free agent at the end of the season. The Cowboys will open up their season in Dallas against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on September 11.

Deshaun Watson’s Six-Game Suspension Sets a Bad Precedent for the NFL

August 2, 2022 by Levon Satamian Leave a Comment

On Monday, disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson ruled that Cleveland Browns star quarterback Deshaun Watson has been suspended for the first six games of the regular season for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy, but he will not be fined.

A total of 25 women filed lawsuits against Watson. He settled 23 of those lawsuits. Watson was accused of sexual misconduct by the 25 women and received a six-game suspension.

In a 16-page report, Robinson concluded, saying:

“Although this is the most significant punishment ever imposed on an NFL player for allegations of nonviolent sexual conduct, Mr. Watson’s pattern of conduct is more egregious than any before reviewed by the NFL,”

Let’s take a look at some of the previous NFL suspensions.

In 2020, Antonio Brown was suspended for sending threatening text messages to a woman who accused him of sexual misconduct. Brown denied the sexual misconduct claim. He pleaded no contest to burglary and battery charges and received two years of probation. Brown received an eight-game suspension.

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley was suspended last season after he bet on NFL games. Ridley said he gambled $1,500 on NFL parlays; he got suspended for one year. The gambling occurred when Ridley was addressing mental health corners and was away from the team.

In 2017, then-Baltimore Ravens, now-Las Vegas Raiders star tight end Darren Waller violated the substance abuse policy; he was suspended for one year. He was suspended for four games for the same violation in 2016. He was reinstated in 2018.

In 2017, Dallas Cowboys star-running back Ezekiel Elliot was suspended for six games after the NFL’s investigation into domestic violence allegations. Elliot’s ex-girlfriend accused him of assaulting her five times during his college days at Ohio State.

Then-New England Patriots quarterback, now-Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback, was suspended for four games in 2016 after the deflategate scandal, as the Indianapolis Colts accused the Patriots of deflating footballs to give Brady the advantage.

In 2019, following a four-month investigation, wide receiver Tyreek Hill was not suspended for allegedly breaking his three-year-old son’s arm. In an audio recording, Hill’s girlfriend said his son is afraid of him; Hill responded by saying: “You should be afraid of me too.”

Recently, in May, Arizona Cardinals star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins was suspended six games after he violated the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

That’s to name a few NFL players who previously received a suspension. None of those players had 24 women accusing them of sexual misconduct.

NFL suspensions:
Calvin Ridley: 17 games, betting
Vontaze Burfict: 12 games, targeting
DeAndre Hopkins: 6 games, PED
Martavis Bryant: Indefinitely, Weed
Josh Gordon: 25+ games, Weed
Darren Waller: 16 games, substance abuse

DeShaun Watson: 6 games, 25 SV accusations

Calvin Ridley was suspended an entire season for gambling $1500 on NFL parlays. Deshaun Watson got six games for 30 women accusing him of sexual assault.

— Clay Travis (@ClayTravis) August 1, 2022

Tony Buzbee, the attorney who represents the women in the civil lawsuits, said:

“This case started because one woman had the fortitude to step forward and make her voice heard … Her courage inspired many others with the same experience. None of this saga would have occurred without that one brave voice. One person can make a difference.”

Regarding the suspension decision, Buzbee said:

“We don’t know what was presented to Judge Robinson by the NFL‘s lawyers. We don’t know how the NFL’s case was presented … only a small fraction of those women that we represent were ever spoken to by the NFL’s lawyers. Beyond that we can’t speculate and have no comment on the decision.”

Watson’s six-game suspension is nowhere near enough; if Ezekiel Elliot and DeAndre Hopkins received a six-game suspension, and Ridley received a suspension for one year, Watson should be suspended for one year.

Not one, not two, but 24 women came forward accusing Watson of sexual misconduct. This is a slap on the wrist, and the NFL has set a terrible precedent because they did not push for a lengthier suspension. As mentioned earlier, Watson will not be fined either.

Some argue that he was accused of sexual misconduct, but some of the other players I mentioned were also accused of sexual misconduct and assault, yet the NFL suspended them six-to-eight games. The difference is that 24 women accused Watson, and in comparison to other athletes, the NFL gave Watson a pass with just a six-game suspension and no fine.
