Report: Joe Manchin Quietly Signals His Next Move

March 17, 2023 by Sister Toldjah Leave a Comment

We’ve written before about how West Virginia Dem Sen. Joe Manchin and the state’s Republican Gov. Jim Justice have been extremely cagey when it comes to questions surrounding their 2024 Senate intentions.

Justice indicated at the end of February that he’d have an answer to the question after March 11, which was the end of the West Virginia legislative session. So an announcement from him on if he’s running for Senate could be imminent.

Manchin stated in an early March interview that he won’t announce anything until the end of the year, and not only would he not endorse President Joe Biden in that same interview but he also wouldn’t rule out a potential presidential run of his own.

All of that, plus other moves Manchin has made in recent weeks (including declining to identify as a Democrat) suggest a man who has already made a decision about his political future who is biding his time until he figures out the right time to strike:

Sen. Joe Manchin III has been distancing himself from President Biden ahead of a possible run as a Democrat in solid red West Virginia even as he plays coy with his reelection intentions.

He has opposed a series of the president’s nominees, is backing GOP efforts to dismantle Mr. Biden’s regulatory agenda and is in a bitter fight with the administration over the implementation of the Inflation Reduction Act that he helped write and pass in a party-line vote.

[…]

These days, Mr. Manchin has opposed three nominees in recent weeks, successfully tanking Gigi Sohn’s bid to join the Federal Communications Commission and blocking Interior Department nominee Laura Daniel-Davis with his perch atop the Senate Energy Committee.

It would seem that Manchin is trying to make nice with the West Virginia voters who have abandoned him in droves after he struck a bad deal with a powerful New York Democrat (Chuck Schumer) on the bogusly-named Inflation Reduction Act and came away empty-handed in the process, which I suspect he knows could also play a significant role in his chances for another term in the U.S. Senate.

To reiterate a point I’ve made before, as the old saying goes, the chickens have come home to roost for Joe Manchin. He’s made his political bed, and now he’s having to try and run away from it in hopes that voters will forgive him for his betrayal.

In waiting until later in the year to announce his intentions, Manchin is trying to give himself time to cover his tracks, likely with the thought in mind that voters have short attention spans. But he’s got a lot going against him even if they do, specifically the fact that West Virginia grows redder with each election cycle and now has more registered Republicans than Democrats.

Not only that, but Justice is popular in the state while Manchin is underwater. So the tapdancing away from Joe Biden has commenced, but unfortunately for Manchin it may be too little, too late.

RedState Weekly Briefing: Fetterman Oddity, Garland Mendacity, Manchin Pique

March 11, 2023 by Susie Moore Leave a Comment

Welcome to the RedState Weekly Briefing  — where we take a quick look at the week’s most viewed stories in case you missed any of them. Grab a cup of coffee and sit down with this 21st Century Weekend Edition of your favorite (online) publication!

#1 – The John Fetterman Situation Just Got Much Weirder — by Bonchie

I told you things were getting weird. The New York Times wrote a full spread actually suggesting that it is normal for a senator to co-sponsor legislation that he’s not even aware of. That’s the best defense they could come up with for a guy who not only can’t perform the duties of his office, but can’t even hold a conversation with someone.

The entire point of electing a representative is that they make decisions in the interests of their constituents. In all my time covering politics, I have never once heard of a Senate staff co-sponsoring legislation for their boss without his or her knowledge. That’s so insane and contrary to the electoral system as to be scandalous all on its own. We aren’t supposed to be a government run by staff proxies. US senators are expected to carry out basic duties, and one of those is being aware of bills they are sponsoring.

#2 – Panic in D.C.: Garland Tells Whopper of a Lie, Proving Why Tucker’s J6 Coverage Was So Important — by Nick Arama

They are truly panicking that the narrative is becoming unhinged when it comes to Jan. 6, that people are seeing that there are other takes, apart from the cherry-picked narrative of the Jan. 6 Committee and the Democrats which was all about using the riot to attack former President Donald Trump and affect the midterms. Among the people the show reached was Twitter head Elon Musk, he saw the points being made.

But while Schumer and Kinzinger were certainly deplorable with their remarks on the day, it may be Attorney General Merrick Garland who had the worst lie. He was asked by a reporter during a press briefing what he thought about Carlson’s coverage. Listen, as even now, Garland lies. He talks about officers assaulted on “that day” and then says, “Five officers died.”

#3 – Manchin Throws Biden Under the Bus as Internal Admin Memo Makes Stunning Admission — by Nick Arama

I welcome him calling it out now, but he should have known that they are placing their radical agenda above everything else — that isn’t new. It’s what animates everything they do, whether it makes any sense or not, however much it might hurt us both at home and in the face of our enemies who are not inhibited by such nonsense. Meanwhile, Joe Biden will lie and say he is doing everything he can to reduce gas prices and help our energy security.

But there’s no question that Manchin is madder than a wet hen, and, at least at this moment, he is not supporting Joe Biden when he is asked about him running again.

#4 – Woody Harrelson Keeps Giving the Modern Left More Reasons to Hate Him — by Brandon Morse

Harrelson recently earned America’s respect again when he hosted Saturday Night Live and gave an opening monologue that would incite waves of controversy from the mainstream left and uproarious applause from everyone else.

Within the speech, Harrelson tells people he read the craziest script that contained a plot where the largest drug cartels in the world unite to buy up the media and the politicians and force people to stay locked up in their homes and can only come out if they take the cartel’s drugs in perpetuity. Obviously, Harrelson was speaking of the lunacy that was the pandemic lockdowns and mandatory vaccinations from the Biden administration.

#5 – The Real Problem With Tucker Carlson’s January 6 Footage — by Kira Davis

McConnell may have thought he was simply saying he thinks the Capitol protests were a Very Bad Thing™, but I heard what he (and so many others like him) really thinks. He means he didn’t like THE STORY Tucker Carlson was telling with the new footage. THE STORY already had its tellers. THE STORY had already been framed. THE STORY had already been written. How dare Carlson come in with rewrites? Who approved him to retell THE STORY?

And isn’t that the big takeaway here? McConnell basically admitted that the J6 footage we’ve been seeing for two years is really a story, and not an objective set of facts. If it had been just the facts, there wouldn’t be any controversy about the new footage being released. It never would have been secret in the first place. Like old Twitter threatening to benevolently “add context” to Trump’s tweets for the benefit of their incurious audience, McConnell and company have decided for the rest of us how January 6, 2021 at the U.S. Capitol should be viewed and observed.

Biden Is a Pandering Mess and Gets Lost on Stage Again

March 6, 2023 by Nick Arama Leave a Comment

Joe Biden was in town on Monday after spending part of the weekend in Delaware and making a speech in Selma, Alabama on Sunday commemorating the 58th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday” where civil rights activists were beaten in Selma by the police. That was not the place to pander and lie about being involved in the civil rights movement. But that didn’t stop Biden, who did just that. He also lied about voting rights being endangered, which was especially despicable given the event.

On Monday, Biden was back in D.C. I feel like at this point, I can probably tell you what lie or exaggeration he’s going to tell depending upon what audience he’s going to appear before and pander to. Biden spoke at the 2023 International Association of Fire Fighters Legislative Conference at the Hyatt Regency.

So what lie was he likely to pull out? You got it, that story about the fire at his home in Wilmington, Delaware. That’s gotten all sorts of rewrites from him over the various times that he’s told it. When we first heard him tell the tale, he said the house burnt down with his wife in it — which would have been a big problem for Jill if that was true. He then corrected it to say, she got out, but a good portion of the house burnt. That was also a lie.

This time, he adjusted it somewhat.

Biden claims “every piece of furniture had to be replaced” after a fire in his home with “smoke that thick — all three stories.”

According to a 2004 AP report, it was “a small fire…contained to the kitchen” that “was under control in 20 minutes.” pic.twitter.com/kTQhgXc7Q3

— RNC Research (@RNCResearch) March 6, 2023

He claimed that there was smoke throughout all three stories of his home, despite the fire department saying publicly that the fire was a “small fire” contained to the kitchen and under control within 20 minutes. At least he spoke about the wife, the cat, and the Corvette in the right order of being saved.

Now, while I’ll give him there might be some smoke, I seriously doubt the claim that he replaced all the furniture on all three floors of the home and that would be a tremendous expense. But let’s take him at his word on that. Did he also move the documents that he had at the home from his time in the Senate, those documents from 1973 or 1974 about which he spoke? He would have had to move them if they were from that time. Funny how lies can come back around on you.

During his remarks to the firefighters, Biden seemed to come close to announcing a run for re-election, in that weird leaning-in, whispering way that he has.

Despite just 16% of Americans saying they’re better off over the past two years, Biden says: “I’m telling my colleagues, ‘Don’t leave ’til we finish the job. We got more to do. I’m determined to finish the job.'” pic.twitter.com/Cihe8Xdtqf

— RNC Research (@RNCResearch) March 6, 2023

“I’m telling my colleagues, ‘Don’t leave ’til we finish the job. We got more to do. I’m determined to finish the job.’”

Finish the job? As if he hasn’t harmed us enough already.

But although Biden made that comment, he didn’t declare it, so he still left people wondering. As I noted over the weekend, that uncertainty on the Democratic side will prompt more people to jump in to challenge him. So far only Marianne Williamson has taken that plunge.

However, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) was asked about supporting Biden over the weekend and he said he needed to see who else was in the race. That’s a bad sign for Joe Biden. Manchin was making remarks that sounded like he might be thinking about throwing his hat in the ring. That would cause Biden a lot more difficulty than Williamson will.

When Biden wrapped his remarks before the firefighters, he gave a golden example of what’s been wrong with his administration on virtually every issue — he got lost, and couldn’t find the right way to go off the stage. How many times has that happened now? He had to be redirected on how to get off the stage.

Wrong way, Joe! pic.twitter.com/znT2AlVaiV

— RNC Research (@RNCResearch) March 6, 2023

That about says it all. No wonder Manchin refuses to say he’s going to support that.

Manchin Throws Biden Under the Bus as Internal Admin Memo Makes Stunning Admission

March 5, 2023 by Nick Arama Leave a Comment

We know that Joe Biden and the Democrats are content to do all kinds of harm to our country and our energy independence to serve the radical climate agenda.

They proved it in a memo that was accidentally posted by the Department of the Interior on Friday – a memo that Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) is upset about, and rightfully so.

Former Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) Director Amanda Lefton acknowledged in a memo late last year that charging fossil fuel companies less to drill in the 958,202 acres of the Cook Inlet off the coast of Alaska would provide greater energy security for the country.

“If a Cook Inlet prospect would be developed, there would be additional government revenues and greater energy security for the State of Alaska, especially if development of natural gas resources in the Cook Inlet ameliorated the long-term supply challenges facing the Anchorage area,” Lefton wrote in the memo.

Lefton said that charging drillers a royalty fee of 16.67 percent would attract more bids and “be more likely to facilitate expeditious and orderly development of [offshore] resources.”

But she wasn’t recommending it. Why?

“Nevertheless, because of the serious challenges facing the Nation from climate change and the impact of [greenhouse gasses] from fossil fuels, BOEM is not recommending this option since it would not include an appropriate surcharge to account for those impacts,” she continued.

Lefton’s specifically recommended the federal government charge drillers with a royalty fee of 18.75%….

In other words, they wanted to hike all the fees to punish and penalize the companies to fit their agenda, regardless if that impeded proper development and hurts our energy security and the people of the region.

The Department of the Interior Assistant Secretary Laura Daniel-Davis went along with this higher fee, despite knowing the facts, “because this rate constitutes the most reasonable balancing of environmental and economic factors for the American public.” She didn’t mention the admission in the leaked memo that the alternative lesser fees would have provided greater energy security.

So what was the result? They got just one bid for one tract. Then the White House canceled that one anyway. However, the sale was mandated by the Inflation Reduction Act, according to Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV). He said he was appalled by what the memo admitted.

“I am appalled by its contents, which make crystal clear that this administration is literally putting their radical climate agenda ahead of the needs of the people of Alaska and the United States,” he continued.

Manchin blasted the administration for ignoring Congress’ intent and seemingly pandering to environmental groups “at the expense of shoring up American energy security and keeping Americans safe.”

“The contents of this memo speak volumes – if this is what this Administration truly believes and is how they are going to make decisions, it is unacceptable,” the West Virginia senator continued. “It’s a clear and intentional threat to energy security and the all-of-the above energy policy Congress has consistently reinforced.”

“I will not support anyone who agrees with this type of misguided reasoning.”

Q: “Are you going to endorse Joe Biden if he runs for re-election?”

JOE MANCHIN: “Oh, there’s plenty of time for the election.”

Q: “He’s the leader of your party…”

MANCHIN: “No, the bottom line is let’s see who’s involved.” pic.twitter.com/INedsa4daN

— RNC Research (@RNCResearch) March 5, 2023

“Are you going to endorse Joe Biden if he runs for re-election?” he was asked. “He’s the leader of your party.”

His response? “No, the bottom line is let’s see who’s involved,” Manchin said.

Manchin wouldn’t even give the obligatory, “Well, I support him if he runs,” or try to deflect.

Is Manchin going to run? This kind of response just might add to that kind of rumor, because he’s surely suggesting that he thinks there are other candidates out there better than Joe Biden. We all know almost anyone would be better but it’s a big thing for a Democrat to say that publicly. We’ve mentioned the possibility of him running before and at this point, he’s not even saying he’s a Democrat. That’s not looking good for Joe Biden and the longer he dilly-dallies deciding to declare, the more people may come out of the woodwork to challenge him.
