Nancy Pelosi Calls Supreme Court 'Extremist' for Scrapping Roe Decision in Scathing Letter to Colleagues

June 27, 2022 by Cameron Arcand Leave a Comment

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) slammed the Supreme Court for overruling Roe v. Wade, which send the abortion issue back to the states, in a letter to her Democratic colleagues on Monday.

“While this extremist Supreme Court works to punish and control the American people, Democrats must continue our fight to expand freedom in America,” she writes.

In the letter, she says that House Democrats are working on legislation to secure data in women’s reproductive health apps, insinuating that “this information could be used against women by a sinister prosecutor in a state that criminalizes abortion.” In addition, Pelosi suggests that legislation would also assert the fact that “Americans have the Constitutional right to travel freely” throughout the country, and “enshrine Roe v. Wade into the law of the land” through the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA).

The speaker also uses scare tactics by mentioning Justice Clarence Thomas’s legal theories on “contraception and in-vitro fertilization to marriage equality,” despite not acknowledging that the court would not actually take action on any of these issues.

For starters, it’s unlikely that legislation on abortion would make it to President Joe Biden’s desk, especially because the Senate filibuster is not going anywhere. The WHPA failed in the Senate back in May, as it did not hit the 60 votes necessary to codify nationwide access to abortion, NPR reported.

Pelosi’s letter comes across as a denial of reality for political purposes, with the objective being to give her party’s base false hope. She is probably well aware that an effort to codify the principles in Roe and Planned Parenthood v. Casey would fail because it already did prior to the overruling. Democrats are late to the game, and they are not acting as if they did not have power in Washington to codify abortion access between 1973 and now. Newsweek pointed out that former President Barack Obama received sharp criticism after the Supreme Court’s overruling, as progressives said he and fellow Democrats missed their chance on abortion.

Instead of accepting the outcome of the Dobbs case, Pelosi’s decision to resort to using hyperpartisan language will only amplify the division within the United States. She is doing a disservice to members of her party–and Americans as a whole–if she does not recognize that this is now a state-level problem. It is an insult to the concept of separation of powers by trying to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the court by calling them “extremists” and trying to work around them after the fact.

Americans need more trust in their institutions, not less, except Pelosi would rather resort to name-calling than acknowledge the importance of the Tenth Amendment.

Mayra Flores Says Yes, Nancy Pelosi Shoved Her Child During Photo-Op

June 27, 2022 by Nick Arama Leave a Comment

When I first saw the video of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) appearing to shove the little daughter of Rep. Mayra Flores (R-TX) with her elbow during a photo-op for her swearing-in, I thought perhaps it was a manipulated video or maybe the angles weren’t clear. But then I saw a video taken from C-Span that seemed to show the same thing.

Why did Nancy Pelosi feel the need use her elbow to move Mayra Flores daughter away? pic.twitter.com/5TWRFTZeCP

— 3sidedstory 🇺🇲 (@3sidedstory) June 26, 2022

As we reported, Nancy looks at her, moves her elbow, and the child moves to her right.

Now Mayra Flores herself is confirming it. Actor James Woods commented on the incident and Flores responded.

I am so proud of my strong, beautiful daughter for not allowing this to faze her. She continued to smile and pose for the picture like a Queen.

No child should be pushed to the side for a photo op. PERIOD!! https://t.co/TA50EntDoq

— Mayra Flores For Congress 🇺🇸🦅 (@MayraFlores2022) June 27, 2022

“I am so proud of my strong, beautiful daughter for not allowing this to faze her. She continued to smile and pose for the picture like a Queen,” Flores said. “No child should be pushed to the side for a photo op. PERIOD!!”

I don’t get what was going on in Pelosi’s mind. If you think the child is too close to you, you bend over and say, “Honey, can you move a little to the right.” You don’t shove her with your elbow like she’s just not worth your time. But it’s a photo-op, it’s just a few seconds, and everyone is supposed to be close to each other, so what’s the issue here?

Remember, this is the lady who is always saying that she does everything for the children. “Children, children, children,” San Fran Nan intones. Of course, that’s just so many bull cookies. She does what she does, always for her power and the power of the Democratic Party.

Could it be a little latent hostility for Flores’ win in a previously Democratic district and the coming GOP wave in November? If so, that’s pretty petty to take it out on a little child. Flores’ win is one sign that Democrats are rapidly losing Hispanic voters because of their extremism as well as failures on the economy. She even got Elon Musk’s vote. Officially, Pelosi thanked Flores for running. “It’s a great honor to welcome Congresswoman Flores to the Capitol and to the Congress of the United States with great congratulations,” Pelosi said in that video. “And again, grateful for her leadership and her beautiful family who is here today.” Pelosi’s office hasn’t responded yet to the incident or on Flores’ comments.

But as Flores said, good on her daughter for standing in there like a champ. Flores herself shows that she’s not going to take things lying down, that she’s going to be vocal and she’s already not been shy about speaking out.

Nancy Pelosi Appears to Shove Away Mayra Flores' Daughter in Weird Scene

June 26, 2022 by Bonchie Leave a Comment

Mayra Flores won a shocking victory in Texas less than two weeks ago, flipping a House district held by Democrats for over 100 years. The 84 percent Hispanic district provided another piece of evidence pointing to a historic shift coming in November toward the GOP.

But I’m not here to talk about any of that. In fact, I’ll just go ahead and open with an admission that I don’t have some deep analysis to provide about what I’m about to share. But it’s the weekend, and this was just way too weird to ignore.

During Mayra Flores’ swearing-in, Nancy Pelosi was standing next to one of Flores’ daughters. Apparently, Pelosi didn’t like how close she got, though, and shoved her away with her elbow.

Nancy out here shoving kids lol https://t.co/cvy3MGkYC3

— Bonchie (@bonchieredstate) June 27, 2022

I’ve watched the video a few times, and I’m not really coming up with an explanation for Pelosi’s behavior that doesn’t make her look bad. Did she not want Flores’ daughter to touch her? If not, why not? I can honestly say that I’ve never found the need to shove a kid who stood too close to me during a picture. Maybe Pelosi is secretly a germaphobe?

Or maybe Pelosi just doesn’t like kids? That wouldn’t be shocking given her support for abortion until birth, a position she’s reiterated lately following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. She’s devoutly Catholic, though. I’m assured of it.

Regardless, I did find it funny that Flores’ daughter stood her ground, leaning right back into Pelosi after being pushed away. One word: Respect.

So what do you think? Purposeful shove or an unintended reflex? Inquiring minds and all that.

Jonathan Turley Dropkicks the Attacks From Pelosi, Biden and AOC Over SCOTUS Decision

June 24, 2022 by Nick Arama Leave a Comment

Democrats are attacking the Supreme Court, with people like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) declaring that the Court is “illegitimate” and calling for people to get out in the “streets.” Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) even said it explicitly — that they should “defy” the decision of the Court. Talk about ‘insurrection’ and throwing norms right out the window. These are the very same people melting down over the three-hour riot on Jan. 6.

My colleague Mike Miller wrote about the comments by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on the SCOTUS abortion decision today (Friday) that overturned Roe. Pelosi attacked the Court in her remarks, calling them the “radical Supreme Court” and “Republican-controlled Supreme Court.”

Nancy Pelosi’s meltdown after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. pic.twitter.com/b0Pp9RGW5j

— NewsBusters (@newsbusters) June 24, 2022

Remember before Joe Biden, when we all used to understand that you have to accept the decision of the Court–even if you don’t like it? The Democrats are now trying to bulldozer that norm, basically declaring the Court equivalent to her Republican opponents, and we know how she attacks them.

Among the things that Pelosi was deceptive about in her remarks was falsely claiming that the SCOTUS decision meant the justices were next coming to take away rights regarding contraception and other privacy issues. But, the majority made it clear in their decision that this had nothing to do with any other issue/right and specifically said it only applied to abortion and did not apply to anything else.

Justice Clarence Thomas made a reference to the other ‘privacy’ issues in his concurrence, but Pelosi is erroneously interpreting what he said (we’ll have a great breakdown from my colleague Susie Moore on that subject, also).

But Pelosi makes it clear why she’s lying — to jack up the anger. “They cannot be allowed to have a majority in the Congress.”

That’s what these lies are about — to whip up the base to come out for the Democrats, regardless of how much she might undermine the Court.

Even folks on the left weren’t buying it.

Pelosi is arguing that the landmark Supreme Court abortion ruling is a reason we should vote for democrats in the mid term with ZERO irony as democrats control the house, senate and oval.

2022.

— dan rolle international airport🏳️‍🌈 (@danrolle) June 24, 2022

George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley dropkicked the heck out of the claim.

Speaker Pelosi just repeated the false claim that this decision now undo cases on contraception and other areas. That is simply untrue and the Court expressly addressed that false claim in the opinion…

— Jonathan Turley (@JonathanTurley) June 24, 2022

…The majority rejects that claim and notes that “perhaps this is designed to stoke unfounded fear that our decision will imperil those other rights.” Having the Speaker refer to the next election despite the express statement to the Court seems to reaffirm that view.

— Jonathan Turley (@JonathanTurley) June 24, 2022

The Court called out anyone pushing this lie as being false. Paging Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden to the courtesy phone. Biden echoed Pelosi and said Roe was on the ballot in November.

…The justices specifically chastise those who are pushing this claim as part of an effort “designed to stoke unfounded fear that our decision will imperil those other rights.” …

— Jonathan Turley (@JonathanTurley) June 24, 2022

…President Biden just again referred to other rights that are now endangered like the right to marriage and contraception. The Court however expressly said that the opinion would not impact those rights.

— Jonathan Turley (@JonathanTurley) June 24, 2022

Meanwhile, AOC claimed that not only should they pack the Court but that “we need to acknowledge that the Supreme Court of the United States has very few checks and balances.”

Yes, that’s a feature, not a bug. It’s by design, which she should know if she had even a little bit of understanding about the Constitution and how our government is supposed to work. They aren’t supposed to be subject to terms, elections, or political whims. That’s why they get lifetime tenure. “Checks” would be during the appointment and the hearing, as well as impeachment–if it ever got to that.

But AOC wants to make their decisions subject to the pressure not subject to the Constitution.

…”How much does the current structure benefit us? And I don’t think it does.” Those views are not just pre-Marbury but pre-constitutional.

I Bet Late Chief Justice Antonin Scalia Is Smiling Today

June 24, 2022 by Mike Miller Leave a Comment

And so it is done.

Nearly 50 years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court in a landmark decision ruled that the U.S. Constitution generally protects a pregnant woman’s right to choose to have an abortion. On Friday morning, the High Court overturned that decision.

“The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives,” wrote Justice Samuel A. Alito, author of the majority opinion. And there we have it. Finally.

As I watched, wrote, and listened to multiple reports and opinions on the Roe overturn, my mind wandered back to one of the greatest legal minds of our time, the late Chief Justice Antonin Scalia, and what he might be thinking today. While Alito was more than competent to write the majority opinion, I’m sure “Nino” would have done the honors, were he still with us, and what a brilliant job he would have done.

Either way, I decided that Justice Scalia is smiling, today. That said, I took a look back at some of Scalia’s positions on abortion — and in particular, Roe v. Wade.

When asked about abortion during an interview with Lesley Stahl on CBS’ “60 Minutes” in 2008,  Scalia admitted he was a “social conservative” but said it “does not affect [his] views on cases.”

On the abortion thing, for example, if indeed I were … trying to impose my own views, I would not only be opposed to Roe v. Wade, I would be in favor of the opposite view, which the antiabortion people would like to see adopted, which is to interpret the Constitution to mean that a state must prohibit abortion.

When Stahl asked, “And you’re against that?” Scalia replied, “Of course,” adding that there is “nothing” in the Constitution to support the interpretation.

Scalia added that allowing the Supreme Court the power to interpret the country’s “standards of decency” is “genuinely anti-democratic,” noted the Baltimore Sun, at the time.

And again, there it is. When presidents and Congress get out over their respective constitutional skis, it is up to SCOTUS to right the ship; to bring it back into alignment with the Constitution of the United States.

Yet, today’s Democrat Party — Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer comes to mind — threatens SCOTUS Justices from the steps of the Supreme Court, and is headed by a pro-abortion president who still refuses to comment on a left-wing crackpot’s attempt to assassinate Justice Brett Kavanaugh at his home.

In the case of Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey — also overturned on Friday morning — the 1992 Supreme Court decision upholding Roe v. Wade, the justices in the majority believed they could “settle once and for all” the dispute over abortion.

Untrue, obviously, given today’s announced decision. As is the case with “settled” or “codified” law, all law, one could argue, is settled — until it is not. The overturn of Roe was as much a victory, if not more so, for the U.S. Constitution, as for the rights of the state governments to make decisions on health care and abortion relative to the voters, one would hope, of their respective states.

Scalia in ’92 said, in dissent of Casey, that an abortion right was not in the Constitution and thus was not a “protected” liberty — a dissent that became a majority opinion 30 years later.

The late Chief Justice was a master of vivid writing and speaking skills. Here are a few of his best, relative comments.

His dissent in Stenberg v. Carhart, 2000:

I am optimistic enough to believe that, one day, Stenberg v. Carhart will be assigned its rightful place in the history of this Court’s jurisprudence beside Korematsu and Dred Scott. The method of killing a human child — one cannot even accurately say an entirely unborn human child — proscribed by this statute is so horrible that the most clinical description of it evokes a shudder of revulsion.

“One cannot even accurately say an entirely unborn human child.” “Shudder revulsion,” indeed.

Scalia added, in the above dissent:

It is a value judgment, dependent upon how much one respects (or believes society ought to respect) the life of a partially delivered fetus, and how much one respects (or believes society ought to respect) the freedom of the woman who gave it life to kill it.

Wrong, Nino. As “deeply devout Catholic” Joe Biden says on-demand abortion (“killing it”) is an “essential health care service.”

Scalia’s speech at the University of Richmond in 2010:

“But some of the liberties the Supreme Court has found to be protected by that word— liberty — nobody thought constituted a liberty when the 14th Amendment was adopted. Abortion? It was criminal in all the states.”

Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Nancy Pelosi, and all other revisionists of American history — solely for their own politically expedient reasons — were unavailable for comment.

Finally, here’s how Scalia best summed up Roe v. Wade:

Roe’s mandate for abortion on demand destroyed the compromises of the past, rendered compromise impossible for the future, and required the entire issue to be resolved uniformly, at the national level.

At the same time, Roe created a vast new class of abortion consumers and abortion proponents by eliminating the moral opprobrium that had attached to the act.

Amen. And again, 30 years later, Scalia nods his head and smiles.
