Trump Wants to Create ‘Spectacle,’ Appear in Handcuffs if He’s Arrested: Multiple Sources

March 22, 2023 by Mike Miller Leave a Comment

If you’re not already sick of the barrage of “breaking” Trump non-news news, continue reading…

So, here’s the deal: Before you skewer the messenger or trash the sources, if you’re so inclined, ask yourself: Is this report quintessential Donald Trump, or what? Then, if you find it necessary, skewer away; I’m more than used to it, it bothers me not, and I actually find it amusing. Anyway, let’s get on with the show.

Sources close to Trump say if the former president is finally arrested, arraigned, and mug-shotted, he wants to turn the whole thing into epic Trumpian melodrama. (My description.) Trump reportedly told several close advisors about his plan, as reported by The Guardian, New York Post, and several other major outlets.

While Trump’s motivations are likely varied, he reportedly wants to be handcuffed behind his back for a perp walk because he wants to demonstrate defiance in the face of what he sees as an unfair prosecution, with the belief that it further galvanize his base for his 2024 presidential campaign. But above all, sources said, he’s afraid that if his court appearance is by video link, or if he skulks into the courthouse, it would make him look “weak” or “like a loser.”

(Again, as we’ve seen for seven years, this kinda stuff is the very essence of Trump and Trumpism.)

Here’s more, via The Guardian:

The recent discussions that Trump has had about his surrender with close advisers at Mar-a-Lago and elsewhere opens a window on to the former president’s unique fears and anxieties as the grand jury, which next convenes on Wednesday, appears on course to return an indictment.

Trump’s legal team in the hush money case has recoiled at the idea of him going in person and recommended that Trump quietly turn himself in and schedule a remote appearance, even citing guidance from his Secret Service detail about potential security concerns.

It remains uncertain when the Manhattan grand jury might return an indictment in the hush money case and make him the first US president, sitting or former, to face criminal charges.

As we reported earlier on Wednesday, the day after predicted he’d be arrested, a scheduled grand jury meeting on Wednesday was abruptly canceled for uncertain reasons. Why? I don’t know, but I do know that the speculation began immediately.

Anyway, it’s unclear how serious Trump is about being handcuffed and perp-walked, for all the world (the Trump faithful) to see. It’s also possible that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg would scuttle any plans Trump might have to make the “spectacle” he allegedly covets.

Incidentally, via the Guardian — again, very Trumpian — Trump reportedly told various allies over the weekend that he didn’t care if someone shot him, reasoning that he’d then become “a martyr,” later adding that if he did get shot, he’d probably win the presidency.

One assumes, of course, that Trump expects he’d survive such an attack.

POLL: Americans Believe the Manhattan DA’s Case Against Trump is Political But Believable

March 22, 2023 by Joe Cunningham Leave a Comment

In the wake of revelations that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has indictments coming for former president Donald Trump, as well as the subsequent fallout and media freakout, the discussion (at least, on the right) has turned to the weaponization of the criminal justice system for political purposes.

To be fair, the left is only concerned about Trump getting arrested that they are just throwing anything at the wall to see what sticks. This, as others have repeatedly pointed out, is just purely partisan politics. After all, the feds walked away from charging Trump over the Stormy Daniels issue, and Bragg himself also backed away from it until the left screamed at him until he complied.

But, the screamers of the left are not representative of America as a whole, and the latest data we have to prove that comes from a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

About half of Americans believe a New York investigation into whether Donald Trump paid hush money to a porn star is politically motivated, but a large majority find the allegations believable, a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll found.

The two-day poll, concluded on Tuesday, found 54% of respondents – including 80% of the former president’s fellow Republicans and 32% of Democrats – said politics was driving the criminal case being weighed by a Manhattan grand jury.

Seventy percent of respondents, and half of Republicans, said it was believable that Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign paid the adult film actress Stormy Daniels for her silence about an alleged sexual encounter.

Some 62% of respondents, including a third of Republicans, said it was also believable that Trump falsified business records and committed fraud.

There is a caveat here: It was a 2-day, online poll that measured adults. Not likely or even registered voters. Just adults.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll gathered responses from 1,003 adults nationwide, including 415 self-described Democrats and 383 Republicans. The poll had a credibility interval, a measure of precision, of about 4-6 percentage points in either direction.

Still, that doesn’t render the data completely irrelevant. There has been very little in terms of arguing that Trump did sleep with the porn star while his wife was pregnant with his child. There isn’t even much of a denial that she was paid to keep quiet about it. The question is how much he knew and how closely tied to his 2016 campaign it was.

It’s also worth noting that, even if he is arrested, tried, and convicted and sent to prison, that doesn’t mean he can’t run for president. It just means he’d be doing so from a prison cell.

But the bottom line is that the investigation and impending indictment/arrest(?) is almost certainly politically motivated. Bragg is notorious for reducing charges against offenders and going easy on felons in a misguided attempt at “criminal justice reform” from within the system. But his policies, like those of other like-minded progressives, have only worsened the crime situation. That he would reduce violent felonies to misdemeanors and then pick up a high-profile elections case against Trump – a case the feds wouldn’t even touch – tells you everything you need to know about his motivations.

Is Trump guilty? Possibly. Probably, even. Is it a crime he should be prosecuted for? Maybe so. But it’s not like paying someone to keep quiet is something Trump offended. How willing is Bragg to go after Democrats who have done the same all for the sake of getting elected or re-elected? That’s a zero-motivation proposal. But he will take this one because (say it with me, kids) “Orange Man Bad.”

Defiant Trump Gets Standing Ovation at Wrestling Event, Appears Unfazed by Possible Indictment

March 18, 2023 by Bob Hoge Leave a Comment

If former President Donald Trump is nervous about his potential indictment next week by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, he’s not showing it, strutting confidently into Tulsa’s BOK Center to watch the NCAA Wrestling Championships. The crowd stood and cheered as The Donald, wearing his usual long red tie, waved and raised his fist.

Here’s another angle:

— I Meme Therefore I Am 🇺🇸 (@ImMeme0) March 19, 2023

Trump’s sunny disposition is in stark contrast to his earlier postings, which, as RedState’s Bonchie reported, lambasted the “CORRUPT & HIGHLY POLITICAL MANHATTAN DISTRICT ATTORNEYS [sic] OFFICE” who he accused of politicizing his office by targeting “THE FAR & AWAY LEADING REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE & FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, [who] WILL BE ARRESTED ON TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK.”

The preposterous case, which federal prosecutors have refused to take up in the past, involves $130,000 hush money Trump paid to porn performer Stormy Daniels in 2016 to allegedly keep her quiet about an affair.

The real question is, who cares? We’re possibly inching toward nuclear war, inflation is rampant and banks are failing, Bragg’s own city is turning into a cesspool of violence and crime—and he’s choosing to focus on a possible affair and payoff by a former president? Trump has consistently denied that he and Daniels ever had a physical relationship.

As for Bragg, he’s acting defiant as well, issuing a letter Saturday to employees laughably claiming that his office applies the law “evenly and fairly.” Read RedState Managing Editor Jennifer Van Laar’s takedown of that ridiculous statement.

As many including Elon Musk have pointed out, if the Manhattan DA does indeed go ahead and arrest Trump, it could give the already-announced candidate a huge leg up in the 2024 presidential election. As Nick Arama reported, Musk tweeted simply: “If this happens, Trump will win in a landslide.”

Why? Because Americans have watched a growing trend of the politicization of our systems of justice in this country, notably with President Biden’s punitive and partisan DOJ. Meanwhile, at the local level, soft-on-crime district attorneys like Bragg and Los Angeles’ George Gascon appear to have no interest in prosecuting criminals.

In the summer of 2022, for instance, a 61-year-old bodega worker was viciously attacked in New York City but managed to grab a knife and kill his assailant. As he was doing so, he himself was stabbed three times by the perp’s girlfriend. Alvin Bragg’s response? He charged the bodega worker with 2nd-degree murder—but he refused to charge the woman who stabbed him three times, claiming she was acting in self-defense.

You can’t make this stuff up. He later dropped the charges against the worker, but they never should have been made in the first place.

This is the same guy who’s trying to nail a former president on flimsy charges of breaking campaign finance law. George Washington law professor Jonathan Turley mocked the case, writing, “although it may be politically popular, the case is legally pathetic.

The fact is, Trump’s appearance at a wrestling event normally wouldn’t make the news on a Saturday night. However, his name is all the place this evening, thanks to Alvin Bragg. As the old saying goes, no publicity is bad publicity.

Trump certainly doesn’t look too worried:

— The TRUMP PAGE 🇺🇸 🦅 (@MichaelDeLauzon) March 19, 2023

Many who don’t even particularly care for Trump can still see that this case is another in a long line of partisan, politicized attempts at “gotcha” by a string of local and federal prosecutors and even the United States Senate—all of whom keep failing spectacularly. Is this the case that’s finally going to bring him down? Are the “walls closing in?”

I’ve heard that before.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Calls Likely Trump Arrest ‘What They Do in Communist Countries’

March 18, 2023 by Mike Miller Leave a Comment

With visions of January 6, 2021, fresh in my head…

As we reported earlier, former President Donald Trump issued a “statement” (staunch denial of guilt) on Saturday, confirming that he expects to be arrested on Tuesday, based on an investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office into hush payments Trump allegedly paid to porn star Stormy Daniels. Daniels insists the money was paid to cover up an affair, while Trump claims no affair happened.

I report, you decide.

Trump further said he will surrender to authorities if he’s indicted on criminal charges, and called on his staunch legion of loyalists to protest his arrest. Uh-huh, what could possibly go wrong? (See: Jan. 6)

In typical Trumpian style, with a healthy dose of martyrdom tossed in, the former president called the allegations and likely arrest a “fully debunked … fairytale,” as he once again riled up the Trumpaneers, urging them to “PROTEST, TAKE OUR NATION BACK!”

Here’s more, as reported by the Washington Examiner:

According to reports, [Manhattan District Attorney Alvin] Bragg is under pressure to indict Trump on charges related to the investigation into hush-money payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels in 2016.

The investigation, said the reports, is over the Trump Organization’s classification of a $130,000 payment to Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, for an alleged similar payment to Daniels.

It’s considered a misdemeanor, but can be changed to a felony, said the reports.

Unshockingly, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) went off on Trump’s likely arrest, hyperbolically declaring, in a long-winded tweet: “This is what they do in communists [sic] countries!”

Biden’s DOJ is coordinating with the Democrat Manhattan DA to arrest Donald Trump, the top Republican Presidential candidate for 2024, and charge him with a fake outdated misdemeanor charge.

It’s ALL FOR POLITICS!

This is what they do in communists [sic]countries to destroy their political opponents!

Republicans in Congress MUST subpoena these communists and END this!

We have the power to do it and we also have the power to DEFUND their salaries and departments!

Enough of this!

The American people deserve a government that actually works for them NOT a bunch of self centered [sic] communists who bail out their donors, protect the elites, and weld their power to punish their political enemies!

Got it.

So here’s the thing, as I write.

I don’t know what’s going to happen on Tuesday, or what specific charges might be filed against Trump. Neither does Marjorie Taylor Greene, Donald Trump, or anyone reading this article. Yet, the stage is once again set for a “peaceful” protest. Incidentally, a good friend of mine recently declared: “If they slap the cuffs on Trump, it’s on!” Now, I know the guy pretty well — and I knew exactly what he meant. Just sayin’.

MTG was not the only Republican lawmaker to post comments, although others I read were far less histrionic. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy tweeted:

Here we go again — an outrageous abuse of power by a radical DA who lets violent criminals walk as he pursues political vengeance against President Trump. I’m directing relevant committees to immediately investigate if federal funds are being used to subvert our democracy by interfering in elections with politically motivated prosecutions.

Measured, reasoned, and respectable, Mr. Speaker; I agree.

So here’s the other thing, which I wrote in a recent article:

For those who believe, no proof is necessary. For those who don’t believe, no proof is possible.

Your not-so-humble pundit will wait until whatever happens, happens — and subsequently, pay rapt attention to the case as it unfolds.

In other words, my future writings will remain a “No Ultracrepidarianism (look it up) Zone.”

Donald Trump Puts Out Statement Confirming His Coming Arrest, Calls for Mass Protests

March 18, 2023 by Bonchie Leave a Comment

As RedState reported previously, law enforcement agencies have already begun preparations to arrest former President Donald Trump sometime in the coming week (as of this writing). That came after the Manhattan District Attorney resurrected a questionable case involving a hush money payment sent to Stormy Daniel.

I’ve written on the case in the past, including the highly politicized motivation behind the never-before-tested legal theory being trotted out by prosecutors. It supposes that the misdemeanor charge can be upgraded to a felony, bypassing the statute of limitations and putting jail time on the table.

Now, Trump has put out a statement that confirms he will be arrested on Tuesday.

NEW: Trump is suggesting that he will be ARRESTED ON TUESDAY due to Manhattan DA probe

— Jonathan Lemire (@JonLemire) March 18, 2023

Past reports noted that Trump’s legal team has recently met with the Manhattan DA’s office in a move that typically only happens prior to an indictment. That was the first sign that something big was coming. That Trump is being so specific, using all caps and not questioning the report, provides further evidence that his arrest is imminent. It is almost certain, especially in a high-profile case like this, that Trump and his legal team have already been made aware of the timeline behind closed doors.

I will say this about the call to take to the streets to protest: Don’t do it.

Right now, Trump actually enjoys a lot of sympathy over this, even from sites like The Washington Post and National Review, both of which are questioning the probable indictment. He can beat this thing legitimately, or at least that’s his best shot to make this go away. If his most diehard reporters cause any level of chaos, specifically in the mold of January 6th, the narrative will be turned on its head. Do not give them what they want because if you do, they will be waiting with more charges.

With that, I’ll leave you to speculate about any further developments. Things are about to get crazy in the United States.
