Donald Trump’s Potential Arrest Turns Into a Fundraising Boon

March 23, 2023 by Jennifer Oliver OConnell Leave a Comment

As the Hill reported on Wednesday, former President Donald Trump is using the possibility of his arrest to fundraise for his 2024 Presidential campaign.

Former President Trump is taking advantage of his possible indictment coming this week by sending out numerous fundraising emails asking his supporters to donate to his third presidential campaign.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has signaled that he is prepared to bring charges against the former president in connection to a hush-money payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels to prevent her from exposing an alleged affair during the 2016 election. Trump, who has denied the affair, said in a social media post that he expects to be arrested this week regarding the investigation, calling for his supporters to protest the possible indictment.

The Hill pulled information from a fundraising email sent to Trump supporters.

“Barricades are being set up around Manhattan Criminal Court – as our nation awaits an announcement on whether President Donald J. Trump will be INDICTED despite having committed NO CRIME,” the fundraising email sent on Tuesday read.

The email added that Trump knows “true vindication” will come on Election Day in 2024, when he says he will take back the White House. The email asks for donations, urging the supporters to send a contribution to the Trump campaign “at the critical moment.”

“If media leaks are correct, this could be the last time I write to you before a possible indictment comes down. So, I want to take this moment to THANK YOU for all of the support you’ve given our movement,” a second email, signed by Trump, stated.

On Thursday, reports indicate that this bold move has paid off BIGLY, according to the U.K. Daily Mail.

Donald Trump‘s likely indictment in New York has triggered a funding avalanche, with donors giving $1.5 million in the three days after the former president announced he was expecting to be arrested.

It marks a significant surge in fundraising following a slow start after Trump announced his 2024 presidential run in November.

The Trump campaign confirmed the numbers to DailyMail.com and said the money continued to roll in, fueled by grassroots anger at the treatment of Trump.

Trump called for his base of MAGA supporters to protest on Saturday when he expected to be arrested that following Tuesday. My colleague Bonchie reported that Tuesday came, and then went, without any arrest. Then, a grand jury meeting floated by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg for Wednesday was abruptly canceled.

It’s looking like another day of the reports of Donald Trump’s impending indictment being wrong. After Tuesday, the day Trump originally proclaimed he’d be arrested, passed without incident, The Daily Mail reported that Wednesday was when the dominos would start falling.

Now, that looks to have been wrong, or at the very least, the plans have changed suddenly. According to Fox News, the scheduled grand jury meeting on Wednesday has been abruptly canceled for uncertain reasons.

My colleague Nick Arama parsed out the possible reasons reported on why the meeting was canceled and surmised that the case may well be in trouble.

Bragg’s office wasn’t talking about the reason for the delay, saying “We can’t confirm or comment on Grand Jury matters.”

But sources familiar with the case told Fox that the proceedings were canceled “amid ‘major dissension’ within the district attorney’s office. One source claimed the district attorney is having trouble convincing the grand jury on potential charges due to the ‘weakness’ of the case.”

The sources also said that Trump has not been formally notified about whether Bragg does plan to bring an indictment and that despite all the hullabaloo, “there remains a real chance that Bragg does not choose to indict the former president.”

Whatever happens, Trump’s instincts to use this as a tool to gain support were on point. The fundraising numbers before the looming threat of indictment as opposed to after Trump’s post on his social media site Truth Social tell the tale, as the Insider reported.

The resulting average of $500,000 a day is almost double the daily average from the weeks before and after he announced his bid for the White House in November.

The Trump campaign brought in $11.8 million in the six weeks before the announcement, averaging out at $280,000 a day. And in the six weeks after Trump announced his run, his campaign raised $9.5 million, or $226,000 a day.

Watch: Ron DeSantis Speaks out on Possible Trump Indictment, Lights up DA Alvin Bragg

March 20, 2023 by Sister Toldjah Leave a Comment

Rumors have been swirling for several days now about the possibility of an indictment coming against former President Donald Trump as early as Tuesday.

Though Trump himself seemed to confirm the rumor in a Truth Social post Saturday where he also called for protests in order to “take our nation back,” the indictment may not be a done deal as one more witness – Michael Cohen’s legal advisor Robert Costello – reportedly still needs to testify, something that is likely to take place Monday according to news reports.

The “hush money” case Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is preparing to bring against Trump is about as flimsy and politically motivated as it gets, so much so that prominent Republicans are speaking out against it, including Trump’s VP Mike Pence, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy (no relation), with the latter calling it “a classic, invidious selective prosecution.”

On Monday morning, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was asked about the developing situation involving the possible indictment and arrest of Trump. He was also asked if he would have any involvement in a potential extradition of Trump.

In his response, DeSantis did not hold back, ripping into Bragg and what DeSantis also called politically motivated while noting that there were ordinary citizens all across the country who were being victimized every day by “Soros-funded” attorneys like Bragg who are abusing the offices they hold for partisan, “woke” reasons:

“I’ve seen rumors swirl. I have not seen any facts yet, and so I don’t know what’s going to happen,” said DeSantis, a likely 2024 Republican presidential hopeful. “But I do know this: The Manhattan district attorney is a Soros-funded prosecutor and so he, like other Soros-funded prosecutors, they weaponize their office to impose a political agenda on society at the expense of the rule of law and public safety.”

[…]

“But what I can speak to is if you have a prosecutor, who is ignoring crimes happening every single day in his jurisdiction, and he chooses to go back many, many years ago to try to use something about porn star hush money payments, that’s an example of pursuing a political agenda and weaponizing the office,” he said.

DeSantis also boasted about being the only governor in the country to remove a Soros-funded attorney from office.

Readers will note DeSantis took a sly dig at Trump in the process when he said “I don’t know what goes into paying hush money to a porn star to secure silence over some type of alleged affair, I just, I can’t speak to that,” but considering how Trump has in recent comments essentially alleged without evidence that DeSantis, a potential rival for the GOP presidential nomination, is a child predator, I’d say the inclusion of the comment was justified.

In any event, after being accused of “deliberate silence” by the MAGA faithful over the weekend, DeSantis has said his piece about the matter. It won’t quiet his staunchest critics, of course, but I suspect that wasn’t DeSantis’ intention anyway. In my opinion, his remarks were well worth the wait.

Jonathan Turley Destroys the DA’s Case Against Trump, It’s All About Theatrics

March 18, 2023 by Nick Arama Leave a Comment

The timing of the reported indictment about to drop against President Donald Trump can only be called suspicious, given the Stormy Daniels issue has been lying fallow for years, with President Donald Trump now a declared candidate for the 2024 presidential nomination.

It’s about the perp walk and the theatrics. Just like they tried the Jan. 6 Committee prior to the midterms, this is going to be the continuing thing that they will throw out there to attack Trump and the Republicans in the presidential race. It’s about the optics to move the middle/the independents away from Republicans.

But what about the legal case against Trump? George Washington law professor Jonathan Turley called it what it is: “legally pathetic.”

Although it may be politically popular, the case is legally pathetic. Bragg is struggling to twist state laws to effectively prosecute a federal case long ago rejected by the Justice Department against Trump over his payment of “hush money” to former stripper Stormy Daniels. In 2018 (yes, that is how long this theory has been around), I wrote how difficult such a federal case would be under existing election laws. Now, six years later, the same theory may be shoehorned into a state claim.

It is extremely difficult to show that paying money to cover up an embarrassing affair was done for election purposes as opposed to an array of obvious other reasons, from protecting a celebrity’s reputation to preserving a marriage. That was demonstrated by the failed federal prosecution of former presidential candidate John Edwards on a much stronger charge of using campaign funds to cover up an affair.

In this case, Trump reportedly paid Daniels $130,000 in the fall of 2016 to cut off or at least reduce any public scandal. The Southern District of New York’s U.S. Attorney’s office had no love lost for Trump, pursuing him and his associates in myriad investigations, but it ultimately rejected a prosecution based on the election law violations. It was not alone: The Federal Election Commission (FEC) chair also expressed doubts about the theory.

Prosecutors working under Bragg’s predecessor, Cyrus Vance Jr., also reportedly rejected the viability of using a New York law to effectively charge a federal offense.

Why didn’t they bring it earlier? Because they knew that it was a tenuous case at best. They’re only pulling it out of the hat, now that 2024 is about to be upon us.

As Turley notes, even Bragg himself wasn’t hot for this case when he came in, and two prosecutors quit because Bragg was refusing to go along with this. But desperation can go a long way. Turley points out that one of the prosecutors even wrote a book trying to lay out the case against Trump, which Turley said was “shocking” because it was “unprofessional and improper.” But now, Bragg ultimately appears to have caved into Democratic pressure and is going ahead with this charade.

However, Turley also makes another important point when it comes to the question of disparity of treatment here.

While we still do not know the specific state charges in the anticipated indictment, the most-discussed would fall under Section 175 for falsifying business records, based on the claim that Trump used legal expenses to conceal the alleged hush-payments that were supposedly used to violate federal election laws. While some legal experts have insisted such concealment is clearly a criminal matter that must be charged, they were conspicuously silent when Hillary Clinton faced a not-dissimilar campaign-finance allegation.

That was the funding of the Steele dossier, which the Clinton campaign falsely declared as a “legal expense.” The FEC fined the Clinton campaign over that false filing. Not only did her team publicly lie about it, but they also promoted the false Russia collusion claims to the FBI and the media. Yet, where is the action against Clinton or the campaign for prosecution? Strangely missing. Talk about the disparity.

Turley pointed out other issues with the prosecution.

A Section 175 charge would normally be a misdemeanor. The only way to convert it into a Class E felony requires a showing that the “intent to defraud includes an intent to commit another crime or to aid or conceal the commission thereof.” That other crime would appear to be the federal election violations which the Justice Department previously declined to charge.

The linkage to a federal offense is critical for another reason: Bragg’s office ran out of time to prosecute this as a misdemeanor years ago; the statute of limitations is two years. Even if he shows this is a viable felony charge, the longer five-year limitation could be hard to establish.

Of course, none of these legalistic problems will be relevant in the coming frenzy. It will be a case that is nothing if not entertaining, one to which you can bring your popcorn — so long as you leave your principles behind.

“The season opener of ‘America’s Got Trump’ might be a guaranteed hit with its New York audience — but it should be a flop as a prosecution,” Turley declared.

He also pointed out the banana republic look of the action, “The criminal justice system can be a terrible weapon when used for political purposes, an all-too-familiar spectacle in countries where political foes can be targeted by the party in power.”

Of course, we also have to account for the bias of the likely very liberal jury in New York. But, if it’s truly about the law, this case is ridiculous at its base and should go down to defeat.

That’s the thing here. The continuing effort against Trump isn’t about the law, principles, or even convicting Trump. It’s always about power and how the Democrats can win, and they’ve already shown they’re willing to do anything. They may know that they will ultimately lose, and that they might even have to drop the case. But the Democrats want to utilize it to attack Trump.

This may end up galvanizing more Americans around Trump. Twitter head Elon Musk is saying if they go ahead with this, he thinks Trump wins in a landslide. We’re already seeing some of those who were on the fence, now saying they would support Trump because of this action. We’ll have to see, but he just may be right.
