IRS Chief: I Didn’t Retaliate Against Hunter Biden Probe Whistleblowers—It Was the DOJ

May 23, 2023 by Bob Hoge Leave a Comment

In response to the whistleblowers who alleged that the IRS gave preferential treatment to first son Hunter Biden being abruptly taken off the case last week in what appeared to be an obvious retaliatory move, Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Daniel Werfel said that it wasn’t his call.

Instead, it was the Department of Justice.

No surprise there, considering we’re living under probably the most politicized DOJ in our history, one that routinely applies two different standards depending on which side of the political aisle someone stands on.

In a letter to the House Ways and Means Committee dated May 17 and obtained by Fox News, the commissioner explains what went down:

“I want to state unequivocally that I have not intervened—and will not intervene—in any way that would impact the status of any whistleblower,” Werfel said.

“The IRS whistleblower you reference alleges that the change in their work assignment came at the direction of the Department of Justice. As a general matter and not in reference to any specific case, I believe it is important to emphasize that in any matter involving federal judicial proceedings, the IRS follows the direction of the Justice Department.” [Bolding mine.]

I love that phrase, “change in work assignment.” We know that means the whistleblower was punished and given some junk job like mopping the closets. Werfel proceeded to use the tactic that it seems all agency heads who appear before Congress use. Namely, cite the desperate need for secrecy:

“When I first learned of the allegations of retaliation referenced in your letter and in media reports on May 16, 2023, I contacted the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA). In light of laws and policies designed to protect the integrity of pending proceedings, I am unable to provide details on this matter,” Werfel wrote.

As RedState‘s Bonchie reported last week, a whistleblower claimed that the entire IRS team working on the Hunter Biden probe was removed from the case. The whistleblower’s attorneys formally alleged that the move was “clearly retaliatory” in a letter to Congress soon after.

The apparent punishment is in stark reality to what Werfel promised in the past:

On April 27, 2023, IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel appeared before the House Committee on Ways and Means. He testified: “I can say without any hesitation there will be no retaliation for anyone making an allegation or a call to a whistleblower hotline.” https://t.co/4GvcQvYdrn

In an April 27 appearance before the committee, the commissioner said “I can say without any hesitation there will be no retaliation for anyone making an allegation or a call to a whistleblower hotline.”

That didn’t age well.

As I reported in April, an IRS watchdog turned whistleblower alleged that federal prosecutors engaged in “preferential treatment and politics” in their treatment of President Joe Biden’s son Hunter—and even tried to block criminal tax charges against him. On Monday, a second whistleblower was revealed who worked under the original informant and who backed his claims. He was immediately threatened with prosecution from IRS brass. Meanwhile, there are multiple whistleblowers over at the FBI alleging corruption within its ranks.

BREAKING: A 2nd IRS whistleblower has come forward after the 5-year long criminal investigation into Hunter Biden was abruptly halted last week.

We are witnessing a coverup right before our eyes.

It’s apparent that Attorney General Merrick Garland and the DOJ aren’t even bothering to pretend anymore that their raison d’être is to pursue equal justice for all. They—the very people in charge of upholding the law—think they’re above it.

McCarthy Has Good News About Biden ‘Bribery’ Form the Whistleblower Was Talking About

May 22, 2023 by Nick Arama Leave a Comment

There’s more news in the fight to get the whistleblower “bribery form” from the FBI.

One whistleblower says that this 1023 form is in the possession of the FBI, and it purportedly shows an “alleged criminal scheme involving then-Vice President Biden and a foreign national relating to the exchange of money for policy decisions.” That’s why it’s been described as a “bribery form.” It allegedly also “includes a precise description of how the alleged criminal scheme was employed as well as its purpose.”

Now, that would be a pretty good smoking gun in the investigation of the Biden pay-for-play and influence-peddling schemes, and it would spell big trouble for Joe Biden, if true. Congress issued a subpoena to try to get the form. They are entitled to it, under their oversight powers, but the response back from the FBI was ridiculous.

They blew past the subpoena deadline of May 10 and acted like the deadline was just the start of “negotiations” about whether or not they had to comply. Their response was a six-page letter, listing all their objections to turning it over.

As I wrote at the time:

The FBI response letter said that they were “committed to beginning the constitutionally mandated accommodation process.” Um, no, guys you had until Wednesday to give it up. This isn’t the “start” of how much you’re going to try to stall to avoid turning it over and protect Joe Biden.

What they didn’t do was deny the document exists. They also argued in a contradictory fashion that they had to protect information about sources and that the details were already public. The FBI said that “contemporaneous public materials cite prior letters and public releases that suggest a significant amount of information is already available.”

That sounds like they’re confirming the form is real. What they leave out that isn’t public is all the details in the form.

This is the kind of thing that we saw happen all during the Obama administration and now under Biden. They’ll stall and hope they can get past the news cycle. Then the “scandal” goes away and they can claim there never were any scandals.

But I don’t think it’s going to work this time. House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) said that wasn’t going to fly, “We plan to follow up with the FBI and expect compliance with the subpoena.”

If there’s one thing that has ticked all of us off, it’s the failure to hold people accountable. Historically, Congress talks a lot but then doesn’t come across and the bad behavior continues. But this Congress is showing they are a bit different. They are certainly putting their pedal to the floor to get this document, given its great import.

Now comes word that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has been putting pressure on FBI Director Christopher Wray to come across with the document. McCarthy is saying after their conversation, he thinks Wray will be complying.

McCarthy (R-Calif.) said he felt confident that FBI Director Christopher Wray will hand over the document after he spoke to him on the phone Friday.

“I wanted to be very clear with the FBI director that Congress has a right and we have the jurisdiction to oversee the FBI,” he said in an interview with Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo.

“This is one piece of paper that a chairman of a committee has requested to see.” [….]

McCarthy said he had made progress convincing Wray that he must hand over the document.

“I explained to the director that we will do everything in our power and we have the jurisdiction over the FBI and we have the right to see this document,” he said on Fox News. “I believe after this call, we will get this document.”

If McCarthy can help pull that off, he will certainly increase his stock with the base. Get out the popcorn and prepare for the Democrats scrambling to explain it away, if that’s released. They’ve hooked themselves to Biden now for 2024, and he just may sink them, if this comes out.
