Exclusive — Matt Gaetz: McCarthy to Bring Immigration Bill for a Floor Vote, Despite Some Declaring It Dead

March 29, 2023 by Kristina Wong Leave a Comment

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) told Breitbart News in an exclusive interview Tuesday that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) confirmed to him H.R. 29 is not dead as Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) has claimed, but will be brought to the House floor for a vote in May.

“Today at conference, Speaker McCarthy committed that in May that H.R. 29, the Chip Roy bill to turn away or detain at the border would be on the floor. That is noteworthy because on Sunday, Tony Gonzalez declared that bill dead,” Gaetz told Breitbart.

Indeed, Gonzales declared the bill — which would force authorities to detain or turn away illegal immigrants trying to enter through the southern U.S. border — “dead.”

“There’s no way it’s going to get on the floor, I’m going to do everything in my power to prevent that,” Gonzales told CBS News’s “Face the Nation.” In another recent interview with the Washington Examiner, he said he objects to the bill on the basis it could hurt legitimate asylum seekers.

Gaetz told Breitbart News, “What’s happening right now is that some of the pro-amnesty Republicans are trying to have an asylum hole and our border policies are large enough to drive the caravans through.”

“The basic premise of the bill is detain or turn away. And it’s our belief that if we did that for a while, the cartels would get the message. And there wouldn’t be folks paying between $7,000 and $70,000 to be moved through Mexico, if upon confrontation with [the Customs and Border Protection]. They would be detained or turned away,” he said.

Gaetz said McCarthy’s recent assurances stemmed back to a deal struck he made in January with the Freedom Caucus hold-outs, who demanded concessions from McCarthy in exchange for their support as speaker. Gaetz was a leading hold-out.

“The reason that McCarthy is insisting on this bill go into the floor, despite these Republicans publicly signing its death warrant is because it’s part of the negotiation that lets his speakership,” he added.

Gaetz did say there were some concerns the bill would be pulled this week, and he was unable to get a firm assurance during a recent House GOP retreat in Orlando earlier this month.

“That concern has now been alleviated, thanks to Speaker McCarthy. Again, we committed to the fidelity of the deal that allows him to serve as speaker,” he said.

Roy, who introduced the bill, told Politico recently there was “a lot of unanimity” among House Republicans on the bill, and recently slammed Gonzales as being on an island.

Roy: “There’s a lot of unanimity in the conference, and one or two people have kind of put themselves on islands. We’ll see what happens”

Gaetz, who was the leading hold-out on McCarthy, praised the speaker.

“We could have been told by McCarthy, ‘Well that was then this is now — we’ve got voices in the conference speaking up against this. I can’t make you a commitment that this is coming to the floor.’ But instead of that, that potential milquetoast response, we got a firm strong commitment, that that this meaningful change will get an up or down vote,” he said.

“Every day I wake up, I see, you know, more fidelity from Kevin McCarthy to his commitments,” he said. “I would say we’re in a process of building trust, and building confidence as my friend Paul Gosar often says, ‘Trust is a series of promises kept.’”

More than a dozen House Republicans sign letter advocating to defund government-imposed COVID-19 vaccine mandate

March 24, 2023 by Alex Nitzberg Leave a Comment

More than a dozen House Republicans have signed onto a letter calling for an appropriations bill to include language to prohibit funds from being used to enforce a Medicare and Medicaid-related COVID-19 vaccine mandate.

“As you draft the upcoming Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act for FY 2024, we request that you include language in your bill that would defund COVID-19 vaccine mandates,” the letter declares.

The letter is directed to House Appropriations Committee chair Kay Granger (R-TX), Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-Ct.), and Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies subcommittee chair Robert Aderholt (R-AL).

A copy of the letter was provided to TheBlaze by Nate Madden, communications director and strategic advisor for GOP Rep. Chip Roy of Texas.

The lawmakers specifically ask for the inclusion of language to block funding for a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services rule.

“None of the funds provided under this Act to the Department of Health and Human Services, or provided under a previous or subsequent appropriations Act to such department, or provided from any account in the Treasury of the United States derived by the collection of fees available to such department, may be used to enforce the rule titled ‘Medicare and Medicaid Programs; Omnibus COVID-19 Health Care Staff Vaccination’, which was issued by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on November 5, 2021, or any substantially similar rule,” the suggested language reads.

“Congress holds the power of the purse and must take every step possible to defund these tyrannical mandates once and for all,” the letter declares. “Again, we are asking that you include language that specifies that none of the funds appropriated shall be used for enforcing COVID-19 vaccine mandates.”

The GOP lawmakers who signed the letter include Reps. Chip Roy of Texas, Jeff Duncan of South Carolina, Ralph Norman of South Carolina, Mary Miller of Illinois, Josh Brecheen of Oklahoma, Claudia Tenney of New York, Dan Bishop of North Carolina, Andy Ogles of Tennessee, Glenn Grothman of Wisconsin, Eric Burlison of Missouri, Kat Cammack of Florida, Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Daniel Webster of Florida, Eli Crane of Arizona, Andrew Clyde of Georgia, Bill Huizenga of Michigan, Scott DesJarlais of Tennessee, Troy Nehls of Texas, and Bob Good of Virginia.

Rand Paul, Chip Roy Introduce Legislation to Eliminate NIAID, Agency that Fauci Led for Decades

March 23, 2023 by Jacob Bliss Leave a Comment

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) introduced accompanying legislation in both chambers on Thursday that would eliminate the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the agency Anthony Fauci formally directed from 1984 to 2022.

The legislation, NIH Reform Act, would ultimately eliminate the NIAID and turn it into three separate national research institutes, each with a different director that the Senate must confirm, limited to a maximum of two five-year terms.

The three new separate national research institutes would be the National Institute of Allergic Diseases, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, and the National Institute of Immunologic Diseases.

The Daily Caller, who first obtained the legislation’s text, noted that the Senate bill already has Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Sen. Mike Braun (R-IN), and Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) as cosponsors.

Paul told the Daily Caller before introducing the bill:

We’ve learned a lot over the past few years, but one lesson in particular is that no one person should be deemed ‘dictator-in-chief.’ No one person should have unilateral authority to make decisions for millions of Americans. To ensure that ineffective, unscientific lockdowns and mandates are never foisted on the American people ever again, I’ve introduced this bill to eliminate Dr. Anthony Fauci’s previous position as Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and divide the role into three separate new institutes. This will create accountability and oversight into a taxpayer funded position that has largely abused its power and has been responsible for many failures and misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Paul referred to Fauci, who led NIAID for nearly 40 years. Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, when Fauci was pushed into the spotlight, the senator has been a prominent critic of him. Last December, he continued his criticism of Fauci, stating that he would historically be remembered for his lapse in judgment.

“[L]ikely there is no public figure or public health figure that has made a greater error in judgment than Dr. Fauci,” he said. “The error in judgment was to fund gain of function research in a totalitarian country. Fund research that allowed them to create super viruses that, in all likelihood, accidentally leaked into the public and caused seven million people to die.”

Roy, who introduced an identical House version of the bill and has been a critic of Fauci, also told the Daily Caller:

From the earliest days of the pandemic, unaccountable public health bureaucracies proved themselves far more adept at ruining lives than saving them. Never again should a single individual, like Dr. Anthony Fauci, wield unchecked power and influence over the lives of the American people. Breaking up Dr. Fauci’s taxpayer funded bully pulpit into three separate agencies — and requiring Senate confirmation for all their future directors — is one of many actions necessary to allow the American people to hold public health agencies accountable.

In the early days of the pandemic, Roy floated criminal charges against Fauci, saying he is the “best example you could have of what happens when you fund federal bureaucrats to go in and make decisions on our behalf, and step in with the power that they have.”
