In a day and age when Christianity is often vilified, especially by woke culture, it’s refreshing to see someone with a platform speak openly and confidently about their faith.
It’s even more refreshing when that person is a 19-year-old.
American superstar Coco Gauff just won the US Open; she’s the first teenager to win the tournament since Serena Williams in 1999.
But instead of reveling in her glory, she chose to highlight her faith in God.
“What does it mean to win your first Grand Slam title on home soil?” an interviewer asked Gauff.
“That French Open loss was a heartbreak for me, but I realized, you know, God puts you through tribulations and trials, and that makes this moment even more sweeter than I can imagine,” said Gauff.
“We saw your prayer; you were on your knees,” the interviewer continued. “You have a lot of faith. How important has that been through this journey for you?”
“It’s been so important,” answered Gauff with tears in her eyes. “I don’t pray for results; I just ask that, you know, I get the strength to give it my all, and whatever happens, happens.”
“I’m so blessed in this life.”
Pat Gray is not only thrilled that “she talked about God,” but he’s also encouraged that “the reporter followed up on a question about faith.”
“That’s amazing,” he says.
However, “SportsCenter” seemed to want to draw attention away from Gauff’s public display of faith.
After her victory, the ESPN show tweeted a video of Gauff’s post-game prayer with the caption, “@cocogauff took a moment to soak it all in after winning her first Grand Slam title,” even though it’s clear as day she is praying.
But luckily, NFL Hall of Famer and former Super Bowl champion Tony Dungy responded with this:
“I hate to break this to you SportsCenter but Coco Gauff was not ‘soaking it all in’ at this moment. She was praying. She has been very open about her Christian faith in the past. It seems pretty obvious what she is doing here.”
“I’m glad that these atheists and agnostics are getting a little pushback,” laughs Pat.
