EU Censorship Push Aimed at Restoring Government and Media’s ‘Monopoly’ on Power

June 2, 2023 by Peter Caddle Leave a Comment

An EU push for social media censorship is really aimed at restoring the monopoly on power the government and media used to enjoy, an MEP has claimed.

Tom Vandendriessche, an EU parliamentarian for the Flemish Vlaams Belang party, has alleged that the union’s continued push for social media censorship is an attempt to restore the near-absolute control the government and legacy media used to hold over public discourse.

The populist MEP made the comments in relation to a report on so-called “foreign interference” voted on by the European Parliament on Thursday.

In a press release published by the transnational body, the report is billed as discussing ways to better increase EU resistance to the malicious activities of hostile nations, such as Russia and China.

However, the release does not mention the report’s extensive attacks on free discourse on social media platforms, with the document going so far as to attack social media platforms for allowing people to criticise rhetoric on climate change.

It goes on to demand that EU and state-government bodies draw up plans to “counter disinformation” online, and urges the European Commission to create a so-called “code of good practice” to control the speech of both public officials and bodies.

“With this text, the European Parliament is also launching a frontal attack on social media and freedom of expression,” Vandendriessche explained in a statement given to Breitbart Europe.

The Flemish politician went on to warn that, although concerns about foreign interference are in many ways legitimate, the EU was ultimately using fears surrounding disinformation to “delegitimize nasty truths”.

“True fake news is easily refuted by the free debate, the free gathering of information and the personal judgment of the citizen,” he said. “The widespread use of the internet and social media undoubtedly resulted in an explosion of questionable news items of all kinds.”

“But the role of the traditional media, in particular, has decreased drastically due to the rise of social media. That is the real problem for the petitioners,” the Flemish politician continued. “The mass media and the government see their chance to restore their monopoly of power through a debate that is supposedly about disinformation.”

“The question remains what exactly disinformation is and who will determine what is and what is not covered,” he went on to add, vowing that he and his party would resist the creation of any sort of “ministry of truth”.

Ramaswamy Slams LinkedIn’s Claim Its Restriction of His Account Was an ‘Error’ as ‘Laughable’

May 26, 2023 by Nick Gilbertson Leave a Comment

Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy said LinkedIn’s “claim that their decision to censor me was an ‘error’” is “laughable” and challenged Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to “publicly condemn LinkedIn’s censorship.”

On Thursday, Ramaswamy announced that Mircosoft-owned LinkedIn had “locked” his account, as it determined he posted “misleading or inaccurate information” on the platform. As Breitbart News reported, the platform took issue with Ramaswamy’s comments from three videos he posted on the site:

“The CCP is playing the Biden administration like a Chinese mandolin. China has weaponized the ‘woke pandemic’ to stay one step ahead of us. And it’s working,” he said in the first quote from a video posted on February 5 reads.

The company took issue with another comment from February 16, when he stated, “If the climate religion was really about climate change, then they’d be worried about, say, shifting oil production from the U.S. to places like Russia and China. Yet, the climate religion and its apostles in the ESG movement have a different objective.”

Finally, the document referenced a third video from May 7 where he asserted, “The climate agenda is a lie: fossil fuels are a requirement for human prosperity.”

Ramaswamy’s team followed up by asking what was false, as he noted on Friday in an emailed press release.

Now @LinkedIn (owned by @Microsoft) is trying to claim their decision to censor me was an “error.” This is laughable. On May 17 we noticed my account was locked. A LinkedIn employee said it was because I had posted videos containing “misleading or inaccurate information.” We…

“We asked them in writing to point out what was false,” he stated. “The employee doubled down and said they do not tolerate ‘misinformation, hate speech, violence or abuse.’ It took several media inquiries before they restored the account nearly a week later.”

After he posted this information publicly on Thursday, a spokesperson for the company said in a statement to Breitbart News, “The account was restricted in error and it’s now back up.”

Ramaswamy blasted LinkedIn’s response in his release on Friday.

“Calling it an ‘error’ now is completely dishonest. This wasn’t a technical glitch, it was an intentional act of censorship of my views on Biden, China, and climate change,” he said. “Typical Big Tech behavior: trying to cover their tracks after egregious election interference.”

“I challenge Satya Nadalla [sic] to publicly condemn LinkedIn’s censorship, or else this is just the beginning of 2024 election interference,” he added.

When Breitbart News reached out via email for comment from LinkedIn and Microsoft regarding Ramaswamy’s latest remarks, LinkedIn shared the same statement that it did Thursday.

Vivek Ramaswamy Says LinkedIn ‘Locked’ His Account: ‘Big Tech Election Interference Has Begun’

May 25, 2023 by Nick Gilbertson Leave a Comment

Update: In a statement to Breitbart News on Thursday afternoon, a LinkedIn spokesperson noted, “The account was restricted in error and it’s now back up.”

Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy asserted Thursday that “Big Tech election interference has begun,” sharing that Microsoft-owned social media company LinkedIn has “locked” his account as it claimed he posted “misleading or inaccurate information.”

In a video posted to his social media on Thursday morning, Ramaswamy noted that he learned from friends who keep up with him on the app that his account was restricted. His team reached out to LinkedIn and learned the company concluded that he posted three videos that contained “misleading or inaccurate information.”

In a screenshot of the message from LinkedIn shared by the candidate, the company points to specific quotes he made in the videos.

“The CCP is playing the Biden administration like a Chinese mandolin. China has weaponized the ‘woke pandemic’ to stay one step ahead of us. And it’s working,” the first quote from a video posted on February 5 reads.

Big Tech election interference has begun: @LinkedIn locked my account & censored me this week for posting videos where I expressed fact-based views as a presidential candidate about climate policy and Biden’s relationships with China. — Vivek Ramaswamy (@VivekGRamaswamy) May 25, 2023

Ramaswamy said the “three strikes” were “staggering.”

When his team “pushed back,” Ramaswamy said he “got specifics” that he violated policies of “hate speech, misinformation, and violence.”

He added he is sure his account would be reinstated, considering his campaign has “connectivity to the people we need to talk to be able to get my Linked-In account back,” but that that is beside his point:

But I’m not bringing this about because it’s about me. I’m bringing this up because if they can do it to me, they can really do it to anybody for making statements about the climate change movement and agenda in this country that are grounded in fact and then express an opinion based on those facts. To make a statement about Biden’s relationships with China and criticize his China policies as a result, to say that that’s gotta be characterized as ‘misinformation, hate speech, and violence,’ per LinkedIn’s terms of service – this is a Microsoft-owned company,  so it shows what’s going on this country.

Ramaswamy continued, pointing to what he sees as an informal partnership of private corporations and the government to censor speech:

These aren’t really the actions of private companies. These are so-called privately held companies or publicly-traded private companies that are doing the work of the government though the back door, silencing speech that the government would never dare censor, could never censor under the Constitution… That’s even more dangerous than direct government censorship in many ways because it is a hybrid of corporate power and state power together, doing what neither one of them could do on their own. That’s really what this is about.

The Republican’s Iowa Bus Tour is set to resume on Friday in Cedar Rapids before stops in Urbandale, Des Moines, and Osceola on Saturday.
