Treasured artifact from 2,800 years ago reveals written references to the biblical King David

January 28, 2023 by Paul Sacca Leave a Comment

Researchers have confirmed that a stone artifact from more than 2,800 years ago has written references to King David in the Bible.

The Mesha Stele, also known as the Moabite Stone, dates back to approximately 840 BC. The 3-foot tall stone slab of black basalt chronicles the 9th century BC victories of King Mesha of Moab – an ancient Levantine kingdom located in the area of the current-day country of Jordan.

World History Encyclopedia details the 34 lines of text inscribed on the Mesha Stele:

The inscription describes two aspects of how Mesha lead Moab into victory against ancient Israel. First, he claims to have defeated ancient Israel on many fronts, capturing or reclaiming many cities and slaying the inhabitants. Second, Mesha claims to have reconstructed or repaired many cities and buildings, including a fortress, king’s residence, and cisterns for water storage.

In 1868, the Mesha Stele was discovered in Jordan, about 15 miles east of the Dead Sea. It is believed to be the largest known source of Moabite writings. The slab was found completely intact. However, local villagers smashed the Mesha Stele before it was obtained by archaeologists.

According to Patterns of Evidence:

Arguments over the possession of the stele led to it being smashed into several fragments by the Bani Hamida tribe (Bedouins) as an act of defiance against the Ottoman authorities. When it became clear that the ownership dispute and bidding war over the stele were about to go in favor of the Ottoman Turks, the Bedouins heated the stele over a fire while pouring water on it causing the stone to explode into pieces.

Archaeologists wisely made a paper mache impression, known as a “squeeze,” of the stone before it was destroyed. Archaeologists were able to reconstruct the Mesha Stele by using the squeeze. The Moabite Stone now resides in the Louvre Museum in Paris, France.

Two historians, Jean-Philippe Delorme and André Lemaire, have found evidence that the Mesha Stele specifically references the biblical King David.

In 2015, a team from the West Semitic Research Project of the University of Southern California took new digital photographs of both the restored stela and the paper squeeze. The team used a method called Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI), in which numerous digital images are taken of an artifact from different angles and then combined to create a precise, three-dimensional digital rendering of the piece. This method is especially valuable because the digital rendering allows researchers to control the lighting of an inscribed artifact, so that hidden, faint, or worn incisions become visible. In 2018, the Louvre Museum also took new, high-resolution backlit pictures of the squeeze, where light was projected directly through the 150-year-old paper to provide a clearer view of the ancient letters it records.

The Biblical Archaeology Society notes, “The ‘House of David’ reference consists of five letters: btdwd (bt = ‘house of’ and dwd = David). The first and fourth letters, bet and waw, were visible beforehand. Lemaire and Delorme see traces of the other three letters, taw, dalet, and dalet, on the new images. To them, the reading ‘House of David’ is now set in stone.”

Catholic League: Militant Secularists Are Behind Most Anti-Christian Bigotry

January 28, 2023 by Thomas D. Williams Ph.D. Leave a Comment

ROME — Anti-Christian bigotry in Europe and the U.S. is more often caused by militant secularism than religious extremism, Catholic League president Bill Donohue said Friday.

Both the U.S. and the U.K. are experiencing “growing intolerance for Christianity,” Donohue wrote, citing a survey by Lifeway Research that says that “nearly 60% agreed that ‘Christians increasingly are confronted by intolerance in America today.’”

Moreover, the Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination Against Christians in Europe (OIDACE) found that anti-Christian hate crimes had increased in Europe by 70 percent between 2019 and 2020, Donohue noted, and the crimes tend to be most severe in Spain and France, “due to a reactionary form of secularism.”

“Secular intolerance and discrimination against Christianity seem to be based on the opposition against more traditional and conservative moral view of Christians,” OIDACE found, noting also that “there is a high rate of religious illiteracy among state authorities, public officials and journalists.”

In a Rome address last July, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito also underscored a “growing hostility to religion, or at least the traditional religious beliefs that are contrary to the new moral code that is ascendant in some sectors,” Donohue observed.

“Christian bashing is sport in the very Western nations that gave birth to Christianity,” Donohue concluded. “That those doing the bashing fancy themselves as the tolerant ones — the ‘open-minded’ secularists — makes the situation all the more perverse.”

Swedish Populist on Qur’an Burnings: If They Get Upset, Burn a Hundred More

January 28, 2023 by Chris Tomlinson Leave a Comment

A member of the populist Sweden Democrats (SD) has weighed in on the controversial burning of a copy of the Qur’an last weekend, stating that the reaction from Turkey and the Islamic world has been unreasonable.

SD member Richard Jomshof, chairman of the Justice Committee, gave his opinion on the burning of the Qur’an last week in front of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm by Danish anti-Islam activist Rasmus Paludan, claiming the backlash had been exaggerated.

“I don’t think you should do it, but you can do it and if they get upset, then fire up a hundred more,” Jomshof said this week, broadcaster SVT reports.

Jomshof also criticised Swedish conservative Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, who released statement condemning the Qur’an burning earlier this week, saying, ” I don’t think he should apologise. I think he’s going too far there.”

“Freedom of expression is a fundamental part of democracy. But what is legal is not necessarily appropriate. Burning books that are holy to many is a deeply disrespectful act. I want to express my sympathy for all Muslims who are offended by what has happened in Stockholm today,” the prime minister said on Twitter.

Responding to the post, Jomsholf said: “We have to be able to talk to each other, absolutely. But we cannot compromise on our freedom of opinion and expression.”

Jomshof is not the only one to criticise the statement, as internal SD emails leaked by a Swedish newspaper showed that party leader Jimmie Åkesson was also critical of the statement, saying, “there is definitely a limit to when sanity and balance in the debate turns into pure creeping for dictatorship-craven Islamism and ‘understanding’ of Islamists who have settled in Sweden and do not respect the most basic principles of our society.”

Åkesson later spoke publicly on the affair saying, “It is worrying if it can be perceived as the government apologizing for the fact that we have democracy in Sweden.”

Since last weekend’s demonstration, the al-Azhar University in Cairo, the centre of thought in the Sunni branch of Islam, called for a boycott of Swedish products.

Turkey has also been angered by the Qur’an burning, putting Sweden’s application to join NATO at risk, with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu stating Thursday that talks with Sweden were “meaningless” following the demonstration.

Tom Brady Shares Prayer About Being a Father to Sons in Heartfelt Tribute

January 27, 2023 by Warner Todd Huston Leave a Comment

Seven-time Super Bowl champ Tom Brady shared a heartwarming father’s prayer for their sons alongside a series of candid photos of his children on Thursday.

Brady took to his Instagram story to post General Douglas MacArthur’s Prayer for His Son, wishing strength, and bravery for their sons, People reported.

The prayer was published in 1965 by Jesse Grover Bell and was written by MacArthur when he was stationed in Australia and serving as Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in the Southwest Pacific area.

Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.

Build me a son whose wishes will not take the place of deeds; a son who will know Thee—and that to know himself is the foundation-stone of knowledge.

Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail.

Build me a son whose heart will be clean, whose goal will be high, a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men, one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.

And after all these things are his, give him, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, and the meekness of true strength.

Then I, his father, will dare to whisper, ‘I have not lived in vain.’

Brady also shared photos of his children taken during their most recent visit.

Another video showed Vivian playing around on a treadmill before jumping down next to the superstar on a bed, with a caption reading, “In other news … the cutest roomie in the world,” with hearts “xinfinity” on it.

Brady shares Jack with ex-wife Bridget Moynahan and Ben and Vivian with newest ex-Gisele Bündchen.

Brady also noted that he wants his kids to fail from time to time as a learning experience.

“I don’t want it to go right for my kids all the time,” Brady said. “I told them that this morning. I said, ‘I want you guys to fail because I want to see what you’re made of if you fail and when you fail.’ ”

Topless woman arrested for allegedly smashing ‘very unique’ Jesus Christ statue at North Dakota cathedral

January 27, 2023 by Paul Sacca Leave a Comment

A topless woman is accused of smashing a statue of Jesus Christ at a cathedral in North Dakota. Church officials say the damage to the Jesus Christ statue could be very costly to repair.

Around 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 23, a woman allegedly walked into St. Mary’s Cathedral in downtown Fargo, North Dakota. Police were called about a topless woman who allegedly committed vandalism inside the church. The woman was shirtless, braless, and shoeless, according to court documents obtained by Valley News Live.

Fargo Police Department officers arrived at St. Mary’s Cathedral and reportedly spotted the topless woman fleeing the place of worship. Police officers tracked down the woman and detained her.

Reverend Riley Durkin provided security camera video to police. The security camera footage allegedly revealed that the topless woman knocked over a potted plant in the cathedral and ripped a Jesus Christ statue off the wall. The suspect allegedly smashed the Jesus statue on the floor and damaged it.

Police arrested the woman, who was identified as 35-year-old Brittney Marie Reynolds.

At the time of her arrest, police officers said Reynolds was unable to answer basic questions. Investigators noted that Reynolds appeared to be under the influence of narcotics.

Reynolds was arrested and taken to Cass County Jail.

According to jail records, Reynolds was charged with criminal mischief, driving under the influence, and providing false information to police officers.

Valley News Live reported, “A Cass County warrant was also put in place because Reynolds allegedly become assaultive toward Essentia Health Emergency Room staff.”

Monseigneur Joseph Goering was unsure of how much it would cost to repair the Jesus statue, but he found a similar statue for the price of $11,500.

Paul Braun, the director of communications for the Diocese of Fargo, said the statue is “very unique” and old. Braun said it would likely be “difficult” to replace.

The Catholic News Agency reported, “The statue, called ‘Christ in Death,’ portrays Jesus’ corpse laying on a burial shroud with a crown of thorns laid alongside his lower legs.”

The Jesus Christ statue was vandalized two years ago when someone painted it black.

Braun added, “In all these incidents, we hope that the people who are part of that and do these things get the help they need, and we pray for them.”

Braun said St. Mary’s Cathedral has a policy of welcoming visitors, “We don’t want this to be a closed cathedral, we want it to be open to all people at all times. We just hope that people show the reverence and respect that they should for a house of God.”
