Biden Signs Legislation to Declassify Coronavirus Origins, Overturn D.C. Crime Bill

March 20, 2023 by Jordan Dixon-Hamilton Leave a Comment

President Joe Biden signed a pair of bills into law on Monday that would declassify information related to the origins of the coronavirus and overturn the controversial Washington, DC, soft-on-crime bill.

The Covid-19 Origin Act, introduced by Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), unanimously passed both chambers of Congress.

The bill directs the Director of National Intelligence to “declassify any and all information relating to potential links between the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the origin” of the coronavirus.

Hawley introduced the legislation after the Department of Energy concluded, with “low confidence,” that the coronavirus could have originated from a Chinese laboratory.

Biden acknowledged the need to “get to the bottom” of the coronavirus’ origins in a statement on Monday.

“We need to get to the bottom of COVID-19’s origins to help ensure we can better prevent future pandemics,” Biden said in a statement. “My Administration will continue to review all classified information relating to COVID–19’s origins, including potential links to the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

“In implementing this legislation, my Administration will declassify and share as much of that information as possible, consistent with my constitutional authority to protect against the disclosure of information that would harm national security,” Biden added.

On the same day, Biden signed a Republican-led effort to overturn D.C.’s crime bill. That crime bill reduced penalties for several violent offenses like carjacking, burglary, and robbery.

Although D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) vetoed the bill, the D.C. Council overrode the mayor’s veto by a 12-1 vote last month.

Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser speaks alongside gun control activists at the March for Our Lives rally against gun violence on the National Mall June 11, 2022 in Washington, DC. The March For Our Lives movement was spurred by the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in 2018. However, Congress can override local D.C. laws through a rarely used resolution of disapproval. Biden alienated members of his party when he signaled support for the GOP-led effort to overturn the crime bill.

“I support D.C. statehood and home-rule — but I don’t support some of the changes D.C. Council put forward over the mayor’s objections — such as lowering penalties for carjackings,” the president tweeted on March 2. “If the Senate votes to overturn what D.C. Council did — I’ll sign it.”

Wyoming Becomes First State to Outlaw Abortion Pills

March 20, 2023 by Katherine Hamilton Leave a Comment

Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon (R) signed a bill on Friday outlawing abortion pills, making the state the first to do so in the wake of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision.

The “Prohibiting Chemical Abortions” bill mandates that any physician or person who distributes, prescribes, or otherwise provides abortion pills could face prison for a maximum of six months and a fine of up to $9,000. Women who go through with or attempt chemical abortions cannot be criminally prosecuted.

“The intent of SF 109 is to protect the unborn from chemicals that seek to destroy human life,” the bill’s sponsor state Sen. Tim Salazar said in a statement to Students for Life Action. “By passing this legislation, Wyoming will make a clear statement that we wish to protect the unborn and women from these dangerous drugs that are used in the taking of an unborn child’s life through abortion.”

The pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute found that mifepristone, the first drug used in a two-drug abortion regimen,  is used for more than half of all abortions in the United States. In 2020, the drug accounted for 53 percent of all abortions, up from 39 percent in 2017.

Former abortionist Dr. Anthony Levatino explained how drug-induced abortions work in his videos about various abortion procedures. The first drug, mifepristone, blocks the action of progesterone, which the mother’s body produces to nourish the pregnancy. When progesterone is blocked, the lining of the mother’s uterus deteriorates, and blood and nourishment are cut off to the developing baby, who then dies inside the mother’s womb. The second drug, misoprostol, (also called Cytotec) then causes contractions and bleeding to expel the baby from the mother’s uterus.

Abortion pills are already banned in 13 states “that have blanket ban on all forms of abortions,” and 15 states “have limited access” to them. But until now, no state had passed a law prohibiting abortion pills explicitly, the Associated Press reported.

Gordon also allowed a separate pro-life measure, called the “Life is a Human Right Act” to become law without his signature.  According to CBS News, Gordon expressed concern the measure would result in a lawsuit that will “delay any resolution to the constitutionality of the abortion ban in Wyoming.” Wyoming already has a a law that bans abortions; however, a judge blocked the law last year amid ongoing litigation.

AI Develops Cancer Drug in 30 Days, Predicts Life Expectancy with 80% Accuracy

March 20, 2023 by Allum Bokhari Leave a Comment

AI technologies invented by scientists at the University of British Columbia and B.C. Cancer has succeeded in discovering a previously-unknown treatment pathway for an aggressive form of liver cancer, designing a new drug to treat it in the process.

The team also deployed AI to determine a patient’s life expectancy, by having it analyze doctors’ notes. The AI reportedly has an 80 percent accuracy rate in its predictions.

The medical advances came about thanks to AlphaFold, a protein structure database featuring AI analysis that can design potential medicines. The team’s work focused on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which is a common and aggressive form of liver cancer.

Via the Daily Mail:

The feat was accomplished in just 30 days from target selection and after only synthesizing seven compounds.

….

The system used to predict life expectancy used natural language processing (NLP)—a branch of AI that understands complex human language—to analyze oncologist notes following a patient’s initial consultation visit.

The model identified characteristics unique to each patient, predicting six month, 36 months and 60 months survival with greater than 80 percent accuracy.

AI has become the chief object of attention in the world of tech, as other parts of the industry continue their protracted slump. The value of AI companies has soared, and mentions of AI technology in investor calls is up over 75 percent.

Microsoft, the company bankrolling OpenAI’s GPT technology, has poured hundreds of millions of dollars into a new supercomputer to power the product, while Google, Facebook, and China’s Baidu are rapidly shifting resources to AI in a dash to catch up.

Exclusive — ‘There Are Big Bucks in Medicine’: Doctors Rip ‘Gender-Affirming Care’ Model

March 18, 2023 by Breccan F. Thies Leave a Comment

SHORT PUMP, Virginia — Doctors say there is a “perverse” monetary incentive structure built around pushing “transgender” drugs and surgeries on children.

Breitbart News sat down with two Richmond-area physicians — a neurologist and a pediatrician — to discuss left-wing movements in the practice of medicine. Both spoke on the condition of anonymity so as to not face professional backlash.

“There are big bucks in medicine,” the neurologist said at a private lecture to around 130 doctors and medical professionals near Richmond, Virginia, hosted by the medical advocacy group Do No Harm. “I think that the dollar incentive is hard to get around.”

As Breitbart News has reported, there is a significant difference between how western Europe and the United States treats children with gender dysphoria.

While the American medical establishment is pushing heavily for the “affirmation” model — which includes prescribing puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and mutilation surgeries to children — European countries have sounded the alarm on how harmful such a model is for children.

While there is an ideological component in America — that some doctors at the lecture told Breitbart News was initially exported to Europe, not imported from Europe — the monetary incentive structures set up are potent motivations as well.

“If you’re running a gender dysphoria clinic in the U.K. or France, you’re not going to be getting paid $5,000 for each surgery,” the neurologist explained, noting the differences between the American capitalism-oriented healthcare system and the socialized European one. “The fact that the model is different is why the Europeans are able to be honest about the situation.”

The doctor was not advocating for socialized medicine, but rather pointing out a significant moral setback that can be present in the American system.

“When you talk about some of these invasive surgeries, you have to be careful to acknowledge that there are entities making a lot of money on the surgery,” he said.

Despite the dubiousness of the “gender affirmation” model, professional medical associations such as the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) — among many others — still push doctors and patients to pursue it.

The issue is that “it’s not overwhelmingly accepted among the rank and file,” the pediatrician said.

“Most pediatricians are very uncomfortable that children are not mature enough at 12, 13, 14 [years old] to make decisions to pursue body-altering treatments,” he continued. “There probably are some, but that makes all of us very uncomfortable.”

The neurologist explained that the “transgender” issue came in a “movement from the left coast to the east coast celebrating LGBTQ.”

“It didn’t just acknowledge it. It didn’t just accept it. It celebrated it,” he said. “The transgender people have kind of piled on.”

The movement has attacked the family unit and “taken advantage” of poor family structures to gain legitimacy.

“The vast majority of people would like to see a family unit, and they would like to see a family and parents involved in that child’s difficult transition or treatment,” the neurologist continued.

He called out Johns Hopkins specifically for “signing up kids for permanent surgeries for gender identity issues that are not appropriate.”

“At what point in the child’s development are you really able to say that they have an irreversible gender dysphoria that deserves an invasive treatment?” he asked, rhetorically. “The kids that are harmed are the kids who were not clearly, fully, accurately diagnosed, and then, they wind up at 18 or 20 [years old] mutilated, and their lives are really destroyed.”

“That can be avoided by not celebrating and pushing kids into invasive things too early,” he said.

Both doctors described the AMA, AAP, and other professional societies as being “very much dominated by academicians.”

“I am no longer an AMA member because I saw the leadership of the AMA flipped from being a mainline, somewhat conservative group that supported patients to a very liberal organization that is pretty much on the left side of government and pushing a lot of these things,” the neurologist said.

The pediatrician explained that these organizations are supposed to be on the “forefront of breakthrough treatments [and] new modes of therapy.”

The “transgender” issue is not the only radical change in the administration of health care in America, however. There has also been a new racialized focus coming from the country’s medical schools and professional organizations.

The push for Critical Race Theory-style reforms in the medical field has been prominent in recent years.

“It’s driven by the higher ed system, not just the medical side, but the academic side, which is very strongly out there for the woke movement, and DEI, and BLM,” the neurologist said.

One manifestation is in the medical school admissions process, which often requires applicants to capitulate to advocating for antiracism and diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as institute racial quotas for admission.

“With medicine, we want the best and the brightest,” the pediatrician said. “Medicine, more than any profession, should be a meritocracy.”

He said he knows many young people who have a “very difficult time getting into medical school, and the idea that the decision would be made based solely on ethnicity is very disturbing.”

Medicine has historically “rewarded hard work” and “accomplishments,” the neurologist said, adding that patients expect a doctor who is “well-trained and very competent.”

“I treat everybody. I work in the free clinic. I have been involved in health care my whole life,” he continued. “I’m understanding and respectful of the societal issues that we have. But to go and burn down the whole medical education community to try to accomplish some very far-left-sided, liberal goals is not in the best interest.”

As far as medical students having to submit essays about their commitment to the ideology, the pediatrician expects that “the kids will play the game.”

“I’m sure there are many applicants who don’t buy into that at all but will write a letter just because, ‘I don’t want to get, you know, I don’t want to create a firestorm. I don’t want to ruin my future and not get into medical school,’” he said. “It’s like the college course, where you have a leftist professor, where you keep your mouth shut the whole semester.”

Canadian General Sues Trudeau Govt for Millions After Sex Assault Acquittal

March 18, 2023 by Chris Tomlinson Leave a Comment

Major General Dany Fortin has launched a suit against the government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for $6 million after he was removed from heading the coronavirus vaccine rollout over sexual assault allegations.

Major General Fortin filed his lawsuit on Wednesday at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, alleging that the Trudeau government acted in a “reprehensible, extreme, flagrant and high-handed” manner in 2021.

Fortin was charged with sexual assault in August of 2021 as a result of allegations from 1988 when he was enrolled in the Canadian military college, but he was acquitted of the charges in December of last year, the National Post newspaper reports.

The lawsuit claims that Fortin was defamed and accuses government officials of disclosing private information inappropriately as well as negligence in their investigation, breaching confidence and conspiracy to cause damage to him.

A Canadian broadcaster has claimed that Canadian Prime Minister just Trudeau was allegedly informed that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) was directly funding at least eleven candidates in the 2019 federal election.

https://t.co/71fYHTU1PF

— Breitbart News (@BreitbartNews) November 8, 2022

Thomas Conway, Fortin’s lawyer, stated: “He was not afforded due process… It’s caused him the kind of grief that you expect anyone would go through, facing the kinds of allegations that he had to face publicly.”

“There is a certain, I would say, chill that has descended over the Canadian Armed Forces relating to all of these allegations of sexual misconduct,” Conway said. “And we are not by any means trying to trivialize that issue. Not by any means. It’s a serious issue. However, unfortunately, everyone seems to have tossed out the notion that someone is entitled to a fair process.”

Prime Minister Trudeau is specifically named in the lawsuit, which also alleges Fortin was removed from his position for political reasons, along with former defence minister Harjit Sajjan, former health minister Patty Hajdu, and several other government and military officials.

The suit is just the latest problem for Trudeau and his government, which is currently in the middle of a scandal that has seen his Liberal Party accused of benefitting from Chinese Communist Party (CCP) election interference.

While Trudeau has appointed former governor general David Johnston as a special rapporteur on foreign interference to determine if a formal inquiry is needed, leaked memos claim that Trudeau and other senior government officials already knew of CCP interference allegations.

Justin Trudeau has announced his government will be setting aside $5.5 million to combat “disinformation” as he struggles with accusations of benefitting from Chinese Communist Party election interference. https://t.co/72oBeOWItd
