Central American Governments Deny White House Claims of Migration Deal

April 14, 2021 by Edwin Mora Leave a Comment

The Guatemalan government denied any signed deal as part of a “commitment” touted by the Biden administration Monday to deploy hundreds of police and military personnel to its southern border with Honduras to stem the surge of migrants heading to the U.S. southern border.

Honduras added it is exploring deploying more soldiers on its border with Guatemala. Still, it has not decided yet, stressing there is “no commitment” to deploy soldiers to the border despite its desire to prevent its nationals from making the potentially deadly journey north.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki and Special Assistant to the President for Immigration for the Domestic Policy Council Tyler Moran touted a multinational “commitment” by Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala on Monday to boost their border guards.

“I think the objective is to make it more difficult to make the journey and make crossing the borders more — more difficult,” she said of the alleged commitments.

However, it appears the Biden administration may have jumped the gun on announcing it had received “commitments” from Mexico and the two Central American countries to deploy more border guards to help deal with the influx of migrants heading to the U.S.

On the same day the White House made their announcement, the governments of Guatemala and Honduras did not appear devoted to the arrangement announced by the White House, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

Guatemala said it had decided to deploy immigration authorities on its own. Meanwhile, Honduras added it was just exploring the prospects of sending more police and military personal to its border to prevent people from heading to the U.S.

Mexico said it was maintaining the same number of troops on its southern border. The Latin American nations’ comments suggested the alleged “commitments” had not changed much.

Guatemalan presidential spokeswoman Patricia Letona declared:

The Guatemalan government has undertaken protection and security actions at the border since last year, on its own initiative, it is a constitutional mandate. In the context of the pandemic, the protection of the borders has become a fundamental aim for the containment of the virus.

Really interesting. Guatemala says that it has NOT signed any kind of agreement with the United States on border security, but says they “maintain their commitment to fortifying border security.”

— Aaron Reichlin-Melnick (@ReichlinMelnick) April 13, 2021

Letona’s comments came after Psaki told reporters, “Guatemala surged 1,500 police and military personnel to its southern border with Honduras and agreed to set up 12 checkpoints along the migratory route.”

Over the last few years, Guatemalan troops have broken up the last several attempted migrant caravans at its northern border with Mexico.

Psaki refused to say what role Vice President Kamala Harris played on the alleged “commitments” announced Monday, only saying the discussions happened on several levels.

Harris talked to Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei at the end of March, but apparently, she failed to convince him to sign a deal to deploy more border authorities.

Honduras Foreign Affairs Minister Lisandro Rosales noted on Monday that Honduras already maintains a multinational force at its border with Guatemala that works closely with that government on combating illegal immigration, organized crime, and other cross-border illegal activity.

But “there was no commitment on the part of the Honduran delegation to put soldiers on the border, even though there is a clear commitment by the Honduran government to avoid this kind of migration that generates death and mourning for Honduran families,” Rosales added.

Nevertheless, Honduras Defense Secretary Fredy Santiago Díaz Zelaya acknowledged later that the military was exploring the possibility of deploying more troops to its border with Guatemala to help deal with migration control.

The military always operates under a plan, and that planning would determine how many troops, if any, would assist national police and immigration authorities at the Honduras-Guatemala border.

“We need to do a correct analysis of the situation, increase troops if it’s necessary,” Díaz Zelaya told local press. He said Honduras would do so “in response to this request that comes from the great nation to the north [the United States] to be able to help on the issue of immigration.”

“Honduras surged 7,000 police and military to disperse a large contingent of migrants,” Psaki said of the alleged “commitment.”

Echoing Psaki, Mexico’s government stressed it would make no changes to the number of troops deployed on its southern border with Guatemala.

“Mexico will maintain the existing deployment of federal forces in its border area, with the objective of enforcing its own immigration legislation, to attend to migrants, mainly unaccompanied minors, and to combat the trafficking of people,” Mexico’s Foreign Affairs ministry proclaimed Monday.

“Mexico made the decision to maintain 10,000 troops at its southern border, resulting in twice as many daily migrant interdictions,” Psaki said.

Since former U.S. President Donald Trump threatened tariffs on Mexican imports in 2019, Mexico has maintained more personnel at its southern border.

President Joe Biden has refused to pressure Mexico to serve as a crucial buffer zone between Central America and the United States.

The Washington Post reported Sunday that Mexico is restricting the number of migrant families it will take back from the U.S., forcing the Biden administration to accept most of them.

Mexico’s pushback would further complicate the Biden administration’s efforts to deal with what the federal government predicts could be a giant wave of migrants to the U.S.-Mexico border in 20 years.

Jen Psaki Defends Embattled Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer: ‘She’s Done a Tremendous Job’

April 14, 2021 by Kyle Olson Leave a Comment

White House press secretary Jen Psaki appeared to read prepared notes praising embattled Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) on Tuesday.

Whitmer, who has struggled to come up with reasons for surging coronavirus cases in the state, despite ongoing lockdowns and mask requirements, also dealt with the news that one of her chief aides ignored her urging that residents not to travel to Florida for spring break last week.

Psaki took time during her daily briefing to defend Whitmer, whom the White House denied a “vaccine surge.”

“She’s done a tremendous job in our view,” Psaki told reporters, “while facing an enormous set of challenges.”

Psaki claimed Whitmer has been “steadfast in her commitment to keeping the people of Michigan safe,” while the state is currently experiencing the highest surge of cases of any in the country.

“If you go back more than a year ago, she led that fight to make sure first responders in the state had PPE [Personal Protective Equipment] they needed when cases took off,” Psaki read, adding Whitmer also wanted more coronavirus testing “when the federal government told governors that they were frankly on their own.”

That was a debunked claim Democrats pushed after former President Donald Trump urged governors to not just rely on the federal government for equipment and supplies, but also to pursue them on their own.

“She had to endure not just a public health crisis and a hostile state legislature, but friends who have passed from the virus, armed aggression in the state capitol, and threats against her life,” Psaki said.

“We feel she’s shown some serious grit, fight, and resolve. We’re going to continue to work with her,” Psaki added.

On April 2, Whitmer effectively blamed the rise in cases on her lockdowns, claiming, “…we were very successful early on, but right now that means in the wake of variants that are easier to catch, we have fewer people with antibodies. And that’s why rushing to vaccinate is so crucial,” the Detroit Free Press reported.

Sunday, Whitmer attempted to downplay the Biden administration’s refusal to send additional vaccine doses, but instead vaccinators and equipment.

“Well, I think they’ve got a plan and they’re committed to sticking to it, and I understand that. And we are definitely grateful for the boots on the ground that they’re sending the mobile units,” she told CBS.

“And we’re going to continue to work well with this White House and — and we’re grateful for that,” she added.

Last week, Breitbart News caught one of Whitmer’s top aides, Tricia Foster, vacationing in Florida, despite the governor urging Michiganders not to travel to the popular spring break location.

In a series of Facebook posts, Foster admitted she was in Siesta Key with several young people and had left her coronavirus-infected son behind. Those teens were not yet eligible for the vaccine.

Whitmer’s press secretary, Bobby Leddy, lashed out at Breitbart News, falsely calling it “a garbage white nationalist website.”

Ayanna Pressley: 'You Can't Be Anti-Racist' If You're Against Canceling Student Loan Debt

April 12, 2021 by Hannah Bleau Leave a Comment

Far-left “Squad” member Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) on Monday suggested it is not possible for an individual to be “anti-racist” if they are against canceling student loan debt.

Pressley, who has continued to advocate for eliminating the bulk of student loan debt, tied support for the policy to being “anti-racist.”

“You can’t be anti-racist if you’re anti student debt cancellation,” she said in a social media post to her one million Twitter followers:

You can’t be anti-racist if you’re anti student debt cancellation. https://t.co/Woi5S1rDX2

— Ayanna Pressley (@AyannaPressley) April 12, 2021

Radical Democrats have pressed the Biden administration to cancel $50,000 in student loan debt — a figure Biden has failed to embrace, consistently signifying a willingness to cancel $10,000 in student loan debt.

“I will not make that happen,” he said of canceling $50,000 in student loan debt, making the remarks during a February CNN town hall. He added he is “prepared to write off a $10,000 debt”:

From the Biden town hall on CNN last night, this questioner asked about canceling $50,000 worth of student debt:

“What will you do to make that happen?”
“I will not make that happen.” pic.twitter.com/Y7auUT2YQZ

— The Recount (@therecount) February 17, 2021

In February, Pressley encouraged Democrats to go big on the coronavirus relief measure, calling for $2,000 monthly checks for Americans and non-citizens, including illegal aliens, as well as the cancellation of “at least $50K in student debt right now”:

That’s right. We can cancel at least $50K in student debt right now and send families, including our immigrant neighbors, $2,000 survival checks a month until this crisis is over.

Let’s make it happen. https://t.co/IO4XajzryM

— Ayanna Pressley (@AyannaPressley) February 11, 2021

Days later, Pressley tied canceling student loan debt to race, framing it as a way to “thank Black women.”

“You want to thank Black women?” she asked. “Cancel student debt — all of it. Black women carry more student debt than any other group in America.”

“Save your words of appreciation. Policy is our love language,” she added:

You want to thank Black women?

Cancel student debt — all of it.

Black women carry more student debt than any other group in America.

Save your words of appreciation. Policy is our love language.

— Ayanna Pressley (@AyannaPressley) January 19, 2021

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus; Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) are among high-profile Democrats calling for the Biden to effectively erase $50,000 in student loan debt.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki has since said the administration is examining ways to cancel student loan debt.

“He was reiterating his previous stated position, which is that he doesn’t favor $50,000 in student loan relief without limitations,” she told reporters following Biden’s CNN town hall.

Biden “will ask them [the Department of Justice] to conduct a legal review of his authority to act on executive action in conjunction with a policy review from his Domestic Policy Council on how executive action debt relief, if any, should be targeted,” she added.

Jen Psaki: Vaccine Outreach to White Conservatives Includes CMT and NASCAR

April 12, 2021 by Charlie Spiering Leave a Comment

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Monday the administration would continue working to encourage white conservatives to get the coronavirus vaccine.

“We’ve run PSAs on the Deadliest Catch, we’re engaged with NASCAR and Country Music TV, we’re looking for a range of creative ways to get directly connected to white conservative communities,” she said.

Psaki spoke about the outreach to white conservatives in reaction to a question during the White House press briefing about people in Southern states resisting federal health officials’ pleas to get vaccinated.

“Often people think of that as just black and brown communities and that is not,” she said, adding that “conservative communities” and “white evangelicals” also are hesitant to get the coronavirus vaccine.

Psaki added that Dr. Anthony Fauci and other federal health officials would continue participating in interviews to spread the message about the importance of getting the vaccine.

She conceded Biden and the rest of the administration needed messaging assistance from local leaders and pastors to encourage Americans to get the vaccine.

“We won’t always be the best messengers but we’re still trying to meet people where they are, but also empowering local organizations,” she said.

White House answered fake reporter's questions for weeks before press corps exposed her to be 'Lego' video gamer

April 11, 2021 by Paul Sacca Leave a Comment

An online video game player was able to infiltrate the White House press corps by pretending to be a political reporter. The fake reporter was even able to submit questions to the Biden administration through the press corps, and White House press secretary Jen Psaki answered the imposter’s questions for weeks.

An online persona posed as a reporter named “Kacey Montagu” for the Daily Mail, a British tabloid best known for celebrity gossip. There were Twitter and LinkedIn accounts dedicated to “Kacey Montagu,” plus she was named as the chief political correspondent for White House News, a fictional website.

From
Politico:

Montagu’s play-acting as a White House reporter goes back at least to December, when he or she set up @WHschedule on Twitter. They repeatedly referenced the “schedule” account in emails as a primary duty. In March, they began sending tweets from @WHpoolreport. The accounts are rudimentary repostings of two sources of information reporters regularly consume: the president, first lady, vice president, and second gentleman’s daily schedules and the so-called pool reports, which are real time dispatches from a small group of journalists tasked with following around those principals during the course of the day and reporting back to the rest of the press corps on their movements and utterances.

The accounts got attention from insiders, who quickly came to rely on their speed and efficiency. @WHSchedule had a following of more than 1,300, including several White House correspondents (some working at POLITICO). The new @WHPoolReport account amassed more than 600 in a few weeks’ time, including some who work in the administration like Michael LaRosa, press secretary for Jill Biden and Symone Sanders, a senior advisor and chief spokesperson for Vice President Kamala Harris.

The person behind the imposter contacted the White House Correspondents Association about being becoming a pool reporter and inquired about applying for a day pass to cover the White House in person.

“Kacey Montagu” was given access to cover COVID-19 government press briefings, but was not called upon.

Montagu regularly sent in questions for the White House press corps to ask Psaki, adding that she wasn’t able to be there in person “due to social distancing regulations.” Montagu was able to hoodwink White House reporters, including from The Plain Dealer and CQ Roll Call, to ask Psaki numerous questions “about everything from COVID-19 travel bans, to coming ambassadorships, to Biden’s reaction to Microsoft being hacked.”

“In at least one instance, a White House official was connected with Montagu to circle back with more information when they had it,” Politico reported.

Some White House reporters researched “Kacey Montagu,” who had a deactivated
LinkedIn account with a profile photo of U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson eating an ice cream cone, and they became suspicious.

During Thursday’s daily White House press briefing, Washington Blade White House Reporter Chris Johnson asked Psaki the question, “How involved is former President Obama and First Lady Obama in the Biden – Harris administration? Is President Biden seeking to bring back the often bipartisan portrait unveiling events at the White House?”

The question was planted by Montagu.

Mediaite investigated Kacey Montagu, and discovered that she “appears to be a gag persona for a former Secretary of State made of Legos.”

“The Montagu website’s
FAQ section describes her as ‘An American Citizen. Former Secretary of State, Mayor, Senator, President Pro Tempore and Speaker of the House,’ and her political views as ‘President Trump 2024, baby! I’m a Conservative,'” the outlet wrote on Thursday.

Politico found that the person behind the “Kacey Montagu” persona was actually a Lego video gamer.

“They believe Montagu’s White House moonlighting began as something to boast about in the online global gaming platform called ROBLOX, where users jokingly call themselves ‘Legos,'” according to Politico. “Within that platform is a role-playing group called nUSA, where people from across the world engage in a mock U.S. government exercise. At one point, Montagu had adopted the role of Secretary of State but resigned from that job after — as they recalled — ‘the [nUSA] President went to war with some U.K. and I thought it was a pretty bad idea!'”

The prankster explained her motivation for the fake White House reporter profiles, “I created them as some fun but also to ensure that people know what is going on — they should be able to know what POTUS and V.P. is doing and I think the account following shows people are interested in that.”

“I love journalism, and I think the press corps is doing a pretty bad job at the moment, so I decided I would ensure some transparency and ask some questions me and some friends wanted the answer to,” the hoaxer told the outlet.

The White House declined to comment on the situation.
