‘Book banning’: CNN’s Don Lemon scaremongers over Florida book policy, pushes debunked narrative

January 27, 2023 by Chris Enloe Leave a Comment

CNN anchor Don Lemon accused Florida of engaging in “book banning” for protecting young school children from being exposed to graphic, hyper-sexualized books without parental consent.

What is going on in Florida?

There has been much scaremongering in the media about Florida HB 1467, which became law last year.

Specifically, the law requires that each “book made available to students through a school district library media center or included in a recommended or assigned school or grade-level reading list must be selected by a school district employee who holds a valid educational media specialist certificate.”

The law states that approved books must be “free of pornography,” “suited to student needs and their ability to comprehend the material presented,” and “appropriate for the grade level and age group.”

Outrage against the law increased this week after pictures went viral showing teachers in parts of Florida covering their classroom bookshelves because they had not yet been vetted. The teachers reportedly took such precautions because they were warned that violating the law could result in third-degree felony charges.

One journalist even reported, “Florida teachers must now remove all ‘unvetted’ books from their classroom libraries or face felony prosecution. The policy is based on the premise that teachers and librarians are using books to ‘groom’ students.”

What did Lemon say?

Reporting on the controversy Thursday, Lemon condemned Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) for the “outrage” and “ridiculous” policy.

“What are we doing here? I feel like we’re going back — I feel like I’m watching a bad version of, like, ‘Pleasantville,'” Lemon said. “I don’t get what’s happening, it feels like the 1950s all over again with, like, book banning.

“This is cancel culture from people who are, I guess, they just want our kids to be ignorant and to control the teachers,” he added. “This is outrageous. I really don’t even know how to explain what’s going on here. It’s just ridiculous.”

‘Outrageous’: Don Lemon reacts to Florida book law championed by DeSantiswww.youtube.com

After back-and-forth conversation with his co-hosts, Lemon declared, “Ron DeSantis, stop it.”

“You’re not helping, you’re hurting,” he added. “These things totally just get me riled up. And you know what? Everybody should be riled up. We got to stand up against this stuff — it is outrageous.”

Anything else?

Florida Education Commissioner Manny Diaz said it is not true that teachers could be subject to felony charges if they do not immediately remove unvetted books from their classrooms.

According to Diaz, the statute makes clear that criminal charges only happen in cases when teachers — or any adult — “knowingly” distribute “egregious” materials to children.

“More fake news from media activists too lazy to read FL law,” he said. “A teacher (or any adult) faces a felony if they knowingly distribute egregious material, such as images which depict sexual conduct, sexual battery, bestiality, or sadomasochistic abuse. Who could be against that?”

Reporter tries to connect gas prices and race — but Energy Secretary Granholm refuses to buy it

January 24, 2023 by Chris Enloe Leave a Comment

Reporter April Ryan tried to argue on Monday that “urban areas” are disproportionately impacted by the gas price crisis and even suggested that race played a role.

But not even Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm bought it.

What happened?

At the White House press briefing, Ryan claimed without evidence that urban communities did not benefit from government action when gas prices were sky-high last year.

“When the president did release the strategic oil reserves …. there were some communities that felt the relief. Other communities did not, particularly those in urban areas; there was price gouging, etc.,” Ryan began. “Could you explain why there was such a difference in communities with gas prices in one community versus the other?

In response, Granholm noted that there was a difference — but in rural communities.

“If you’re not near a refinery, that’s another reason why the transportation costs are tacked on at the pump,” she said. “So you’re seeing, for example, when refineries go down in regions, then the prices go up in those regions much more than they would nationwide.”

01/23/23: Press Briefing by Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierreyoutu.be

Not satisfied, Ryan then explicitly invoked race.

“But specifically, the urban areas. Because there was still a big pinch in urban areas with these gas prices when the outlying communities, particularly majority white communities, were seeing the drop to $3, and many of these urban areas were seeing $4 and $5 gas prices. Could you speak to that?” she followed up.

Granholm, however, did not buy the purported connection.

The secretary informed Ryan that most gas stations are owned by individuals and reiterated that price gouging is illegal. But it was difficult for Granholm to give a substantive response because Ryan made her claims without supporting evidence.

Anything else?

Earlier in the briefing, a reporter confronted Granholm about the Biden administration’s double standard on gas prices. When they were high last year, Biden blamed Russia. But he took credit when they decreased.

With gas prices increasing again, the reporter asked, “The president took credit for the prices coming down. … Does the president get credit for the price of gas going up?”

Granholm responded that “obviously” the price increase is “based upon international and climate events.”

White House reporters slam Jean-Pierre for stonewalling over Biden classified docs: ‘Painful waste of time’

January 20, 2023 by Chris Enloe Leave a Comment

Reporters are growing increasingly frustrated with White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre for not providing answers to critical questions about President Joe Biden’s retention of classified documents.

What are they saying?

More than a half-dozen White House reporters spoke with CNN reporter Oliver Darcy about their frustrations with Jean-Pierre’s stonewalling.

Speaking behind anonymity, the reporters did not hold back.

  • “She is arguably the least effective White House press secretary of the television era,” one reporter said.
  • “It’s just a painful waste of time,” another reporter said. “You just get the feeling that you’re wasting your time and whatever is in front of her in the binder is all she is going to say, no matter how many times you ask the question.”
  • “There is the expectation that when you say something, it’s going to be true. That’s been the biggest credibility hit for her, it’s answering a question in a way that ends up not being true,” another reporter said.

Meanwhile, another reporter told Darcy that most of the press corps likes Jean-Pierre personally, but “that shouldn’t be an excuse for her competence professionally.”

What is the background?

For more than a week, reporters have grilled Jean-Pierre for specifics about the multiple discoveries of classified documents, purportedly from the Obama administration, that were discovered at Biden’s post-vice presidential office and his Wilmington, Delaware, residence.

The chief question has been why the White House declined to disclose the discoveries in a more transparent way.

Specifically, the White House revealed last Monday the discovery of classified documents at Biden’s office on Nov. 2. But a batch was also discovered at Biden’s residence on Dec. 20.

However, when the White House admitted to the first batch, officials did not admit to the second; it was only after NBC News reported on the existence of the second batch that the White House confirmed that discovery.

Indeed, Jean-Pierre’s press briefings have become, in the words of Fox News reporter Jacqui Heinrich, an “information blackout.”

That’s because when reporters pose a question that Jean-Pierre won’t answer, she refers reporters to the Justice Department or White House counsel’s office. But when the reporters reach out to those entities, each of them refers the reporters to each other or to special counsel Robert Hur. In the end, no new information is released.

Tension in the White House briefing room has led some Democratic strategists to suggest the White House appoint one person, not Jean-Pierre, to handle all communications about the classified documents scandal.

CNN airs damning report that Biden ‘did interact’ with Hunter’s business associates: ‘Despite his denials’

January 19, 2023 by Chris Enloe Leave a Comment

CNN aired on Wednesday a report devastating to President Joe Biden’s claims that he never engaged in the business dealings of his son, Hunter Biden.

Biden has repeatedly denied any involvement in Hunter Biden’s overseas business deals. The CNN segment began with Biden’s own words: “I have never discussed with my son or my brother or anyone else anything having to do with their businesses, period.”

Then, Pamela Brown, chief investigative correspondent at CNN, dove into devastating detail demonstrating how that is allegedly not true.

“Despite his denials, a CNN review of the laptop data, as well as other public material, shows that Joe Biden did interact with some of his son’s associates while serving as vice president, though it’s unclear exactly what was discussed,” Brown narrated.

She explained:

One example, the Republicans cite Miguel Aleman Magnani, a Mexican businessman and son of the former president who Hunter was trying to woo. In 2014, Aleman Magnani and his dad were photographed at the White House with then-Vice President Biden. In a later email, Hunter Biden reminds Aleman Magnani of the favors he’s done for him.

“We’ve been talking about business deals and partnerships for seven years. I have brought every single person you have ever asked me to bring to the F’ing White House and the vice president’s house and the inauguration.”

The report went on to demonstrate how Hunter and the president’s brothers, Frank and James, have used the influence of Joe Biden to broker their interests.

Despite even CNN’s own admission that Biden, contrary to his promises, has been involved in some of the business dealings of his family, the White House told the network it stands by Biden’s previous assertions.

Biden’s family faces renewed scrutinywww.youtube.com

What is the background?

Biden and his family’s business dealings will be a major political story this year. House Republicans, who won control of the House in the midterm elections, have promised to investigate the president.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R) said the investigation will probe whether Biden was “directly involved with Hunter Biden’s business deals.”

Like CNN’s report alleges, House Republicans claim that Biden “personally participated in” Hunter’s business dealings.
