Jim Jordan Seeks Testimony from Manhattan Prosecutors Who Resigned over Stalled Trump Probe

March 22, 2023 by Ashley Oliver Leave a Comment

Judiciary Committee chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) requested Wednesday that a pair of former Manhattan prosecutors who resigned in protest from the Manhattan district attorney’s office last year testify before Congress and provide documents related to the office’s yearslong investigation into former President Donald Trump.

Jordan sent Carey Dunne and Mark Pomerantz each letters, obtained by Breitbart News, with his requests, accusing the pair of shaming Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg into “resurrecting” the Trump probe after they quit because of Bragg’s doubt about moving forward with the case when he first took office last year.

“It now appears that your efforts to shame Bragg have worked as he is reportedly resurrecting a so-called ‘zombie’ case against President Trump using a tenuous and untested legal theory,” Jordan wrote.

Read copies of the letters below:

The letters come amid speculation that Trump, who is running for president again in 2024, could be indicted in the coming days in connection with a years-old hush money scheme involving porn star Stormy Daniels and Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen.

The possibility of the historic indictment began dominating headlines on Saturday when Trump announced on his social media platform Truth Social that he expected to be arrested this week on charges related to the case.

Jordan and others contacted Bragg soon thereafter seeking testimony from the district attorney, contending that Bragg’s move when he took office to lighten certain criminal penalties “requires congressional scrutiny” because he could potentially be failing to maintain an appropriate level of law and order while using federal grants.

Jordan also made the argument to Bragg, as well as a similar argument to Dunne and Pomerantz, that the “apparent decision to pursue criminal charges where federal authorities declined to do so requires oversight to inform potential legislative reforms about the delineation of prosecutorial authority between federal and local officials.”

Jordan, who told Breitbart News at the time of publication that he had not heard from Bragg, gave the district attorney until Thursday to respond to him.

Jordan gave Dunne and Pomerantz until Monday to provide him with the requested documents and schedule their testimonies, which he asked to do through transcribed interviews, with Congress.

Dunne and Pomerantz unexpectedly resigned last year shortly after Bragg took office, per the New York Times. The Times initially reported that “people with knowledge of the matter” said the pair of attorneys quit after Bragg conveyed reluctance to them about moving forward with the ongoing Trump investigation.

Later, Pomerantz’s resignation letter appeared in the outlet stating that Pomerantz had believed Trump was “guilty of numerous felony violations” related to his financial statements. He wrote to Bragg that he was quitting because he thought Bragg’s decision at the time to “indefinitely” suspend the investigation into Trump was “misguided.”

“Your actions, both as a special prosecutor and since leaving the District Attorney’s office, cast serious doubt on the administration of fair and impartial justice in this matter,” Jordan wrote, condemning Pomerantz for having “unfairly disparaged” Trump as a “felon to millions of Times readers.”

Chuck Schumer Refuses to State Confidence in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg

March 22, 2023 by Jordan Dixon-Hamilton Leave a Comment

Democrat Senate Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) refused to state his confidence in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who is expected to indict former President Donald Trump.

Schumer’s remarks came during a press conference on Wednesday.

“Do you have confidence in Alvin Bragg?” one reporter asked Schumer.

Schumer refused to answer, instead insisting that it is “premature to comment” on the situation.

“Look, the bottom line is, as I said, it’s premature to comment on what’s happening, and we’ll have to wait and see what he does,” Schumer responded.

Bragg is investigating Trump for his alleged role in paying Stormy Daniels hush money.

As Breitbart News reported:

Bragg, who was financially tied to Democrat megadonor George Soros in his campaign for DA, began relitigating Daniels’ story “to jump-start [the DA office’s] criminal investigation” into Trump within Bragg’s first year in office, per the New York Times.

The investigation includes Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen, who has said he was pressured to make a $130,000 hush money payment on behalf of the former president to Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

Cohen in 2018 was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to numerous crimes involving tax evasion, arranging payments to silence women, and misleading Congress about past business dealings in Russia.

Trump thrust his possible indictment into the spotlight over the weekend after he spoke about “illegal leaks” from the Manhattan district attorney’s office that purported he would be arrested this week.

Trump’s announcement sparked outrage from congressional Republicans.

“Here we go again — an outrageous abuse of power by a radical DA who lets violent criminals walk as he pursues political vengeance against President Trump,” House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) tweeted. “I’m directing relevant committees to immediately investigate if federal funds are being used to subvert our democracy by interfering in elections with politically motivated prosecutions.”

Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance noted Bragg’s links to Democrat megadonor George Soros and said Bragg “allows violent criminals to walk the streets of New York City, but will prosecute the likely Republican nominee (and former president) on a baseless misdemeanor charge.”

Some Democrats have also expressed concern over Bragg’s possible prosecution of Trump. West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin (D) warned the move may backfire on Democrats.

“There’s many reasons not to support Donald Trump. There’s many reasons why Donald Trump should not be president again of the United States but you should not allow the court system to be viewed as a political pawn,” Manchin told reporters Tuesday. “I think it would basically have the reverse effect as what some people would think, not for the good.”

Dem Rep. Goldman: GOP Potentially Tying to Obstruct DA Bragg’s Probe

March 21, 2023 by Pam Key Leave a Comment

Representative Daniel Goldman (D-NY) said Tuesday on “CNN Primetime” that House Republicans potentially are trying to obstruct Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s investigation by requesting he testify before Congress about a potential indictment of former President Donald Trump.

Anchor John Berman said, “Many of your Republican colleagues, you just heard Speaker McCarthy there, are disparaging District Attorney Alvin Bragg and the probe, downplaying the investigation before it’s concluded. What do you say to their argument an indictment would be partisan and politically motivated?”

Goldman said, “It’s very clear they’re doing the bidding of Donald Trump and trying to undermine this investigation even to the point of potentially obstructing it.”

Berman said, “That’s a pretty strong word. What exactly do you mean by obstruction?”

Goldman said, “Well, when you look at the threats, when you look at the accusations and when you look at the inflammatory language in that letter in particular, it is very clear that they are trying to influence, put it that way, Alvin Bragg in some way. Influencing a prosecutorial decision or witness testimony or otherwise can be obstruction of justice. I’m not saying that they have committed a crime here, but I think what is very clear is that they are trying to interfere and influence this investigation without knowing the facts and without knowing the evidence. Essentially they’re trying to put Donald Trump above the law. That is antithetical to our fundamental rule of law, which is that our government is one of laws, not men.”

Graham: Potential Trump NYC Indictment ‘Will Blow Up Our Country — This Is a Bunch of B.S.’

March 21, 2023 by Pam Key Leave a Comment

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said Tuesday on FNC’s “Fox & Friends” that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s potential indicting of former President Donald Trump is a “bunch of B.S.” that will blow up the country.

Co-host Brian Kilmeade asked, “Are you concerned about District Attorney Bragg, Alvin Bragg indicting President Trump next week in an unpredicted way and the circus there would be around that?”

Graham said, “Yeah, it will blow up our country, and this is a bunch of B.S. You’ve had the prosecutor before, Bragg. Mr. Vance looked at the case and passed on it. You had the U.S. attorney in New York say, ‘I won’t do it federally.’ There was an intervening cause other than Trump running. One of the guys in the D.A.’s Office wrote a book very critical of Vance, ‘You should have prosecuted Trump, you let him off,’ and Bragg feels that pressure. He is a George Soros-backed prosecutor. He can’t take the heat, so the guy is yielding to political pressure generated by the former prosecutor. And this is a case without merit, in my view. Donald Trump will be the only person in the history of New York prosecuted under this theory.”

Jim Jordan: Did the Manhattan DA’s Trump Investigation Stem from the Mueller Special Counsel Probe?

March 20, 2023 by Jeff Poor Leave a Comment

Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH), the House Judiciary Committee chairman, said he wants to know how much correspondence occurred between the Department of Justice and the Manhattan District Attorney’s office in the lead-up to its investigation of former President Donald Trump.

Earlier in the day, House Republicans revealed their intentions to conduct queries into the potential relationship.

Jordan, during an appearance on FNC’s “The Faulkner Focus,” questioned the merits of the Manhattan DA’s office investigation but said it was an open question if the allegations Trump was facing go back to the Mueller special counsel probe.

“[W]e want to know what’s going on here,” he said. “We want to see the communications that have – that have taken place between the Federal Justice Department and your District Attorney’s office there in Manhattan because, understand, Harris, first they went after President Trump on Russia, then it was a phone call with Zelenskyy, then they wanted his tax return, then they go after his business records. Then they go after his children. And now it’s some misdemeanor alleged bookkeeping error that they’re going — and this is from the prosecutor who initially didn’t want to do this. In fact, he had people resign because he wasn’t going to do this because no one else would bring this case. I mean, the DOJ didn’t bring the case, the Federal District of New York didn’t bring the case, the previous prosecutor in the district there in Manhattan didn’t bring the case. Mr. Bragg himself didn’t want to bring the case.”

“But then he got pressured, I think, from the left. And I would say this, the one thing that has changed, the one thing that I think has changed his mind, is President Trump announced he was going to run for president again, and suddenly here they go, now they’re coming after him for some alleged bookkeeping error. You’ve got to be kidding me. So, we want to know what kind of federal involvement may have — may have taken place here. And we want to know, did this stem from the Mueller special counsel investigation getting to this point as well?”
