Poll: Donald Trump Gains Support in Last Month, Ron DeSantis Drops

March 23, 2023 by Hannah Bleau Leave a Comment

Former President Donald Trump has gained support in the hypothetical 2024 presidential primary race over the last month, the March survey from McLaughlin & Associates found.

The survey, taken March 16- 20, 2023, asked Republican primary voters who they would support for president out of a wide range of potential candidates. The list includes former President Donald Trump, Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, former U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley, Sen. Mitt Romney, former Rep. Liz Cheney, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, Virginia Gov. German Youngkin, Sen. Tim Scott, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former national security adviser John Bolton, and anti-woke businessman Vivek Ramaswamy.

According to the most recent data, Trump leads the pack with 46 percent support, followed by DeSantis, who garnered 23 percent support. For Trump, that reflects an increase from the 42 percent support he saw last month — a four-point jump. Meanwhile, DeSantis’s 23 percent support represents an eight percent drop from the 31 percent support he saw in January and three percent drop from the 26 percent he saw in February.

In other words, Trump’s lead over DeSantis has expanded from 12 percent in January, to 16 percent in February, to a 23 point gap in March:

No other candidate comes close, as Pence comes in third with eight percent support, followed by Haley (5 percent), Romney (3 percent), and Cheney (3 percent). Every other candidate saw one percent support or less.

The survey also asked Republican primary voters who they would vote for absent of Trump, replacing the former president with his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr. In that scenario, DeSantis takes the clear lead with 35 percent support, followed by Trump Jr. with 14 percent support.

When placed in a head-to-head matchup, Trump leads DeSantis 61 percent to 31 percent. Trump also holds the lead among independents, 48 percent to 39 percent in that scenario:

2024 National Republican Primary:

Trump 46% (+23)
DeSantis 23%
Pence 8%
Haley 5%
Romney 3%
Cheney 3%
Abbott 1%
Sununu 1%
Bolton 1%
Youngkin 1%
T. Scott 1%
Pompeo 0%
Ramaswamy 0%

The results coincide with Tuesday’s Morning Consult survey, which also showed the trend of Trump gaining in support amid rumors of an impending arrest at the hands of woke leftist prosecutor Alvin Bragg. That survey showed Trump expanding his lead over DeSantis from +24 to +28 in the last week:

Poll: Momentum-Backed Trump Surges to 14-Point Lead Since Early February

March 21, 2023 by Nick Gilbertson Leave a Comment

Former President Donald Trump has surged to a double-digit lead over Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) after they were tied in early February, according to a hypothetical 2024 Republican primary poll.

The Monmouth University poll released Tuesday shows that 41 percent of Republican voters want Trump as the GOP nominee, placing him 14 percentage points above DeSantis at 27 percent. Former Gov. Nikki Haley (R-SC) holds three percent of support, while former Vice President Mike Pence and Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY), Tim Scott (R-SC), and Ted Cruz (R-TX) are tied at one percent.

Monmouth Poll: 2024 GOP Primary*

• Trump — 41% (+8 from Feb)
• DeSantis — 27% (-6)
• Haley — 3%
• Pence — 1%
• Paul — 1%
• Cruz — 1%
• T. Scott — 1%

2-Way:
• Trump — 47% (+7)
• DeSantis — 46% (-7)

“Trump and DeSantis are grabbing most of the media attention, so it is not surprising that most Republican voters do not come up with any names other than these two,” said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute.

Trump has gained eight percentage points of support compared to a Monmouth poll released on February 9, when he and DeSantis were tied at 33 percent. Conversely, the Florida governor has slid six points.

Trump has also made substantial gains on DeSantis in Monmouth’s hypothetical head-to-head poll. Currently, Trump leads 47 percent to 46 percent, a net-14 point swing his way in seven weeks. The previous poll, which was completed between January 26 and February 2, showed DeSantis with a double-digit lead over the 45th president at 53 percent and 40 percent, respectively.

Monmouth’s latest survey sampled respondents between March 16-20, meaning a portion of the poll was conducted after Trump announced he expects to be arrested by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office in the near future. A Morning Consult poll that was also partly conducted after the announcement showed Trump’s lead continuing to surge as well.

DeSantis weighed in on the expected arrest on Monday. He condemned George Soros-backed New York County District Attorney Alvin Bragg but also said his administration would “not going to be involved” with a “manufactured circus by some Soros [backed] DA,”

Breitbart News reported, “But what I can speak to is that if you have a prosecutor who is ignoring crimes happening every single day in his jurisdiction, and he chooses to go back many, many years ago, to try to use something about porn star hush money payment,” DeSantis said, concluding that he has “real issues” to deal with in Florida.

Some conservatives were highly critical of DeSantis’s response, including Mike Cernovich, who asserted, “There is no bigger issue.”

DeSantis, America’s greatest governor, believes using selective prosecution against Republican candidates is a “sideshow.” He greatly misunderstandings the threats to this country arising from Soros DA’s. Democrats want to put conservatives in gulags. There is no bigger issue.

Poll: Trump Sees Another Boost amid Rumors of Looming Arrest, DeSantis Drops

March 21, 2023 by Hannah Bleau Leave a Comment

Former President Donald Trump experienced yet another boost this week amid rumors of a looming arrest, the latest Morning Consult survey, released Tuesday, found.

This week’s Morning Consult survey demonstrates gains for the former president, as he now has 54 percent support — up from 52 percent recorded last week. Meanwhile, his closest potential competitor, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, lost two points, going from 28 percent to 26 percent. In other words, Trump’s lead jumped from +24 to +28 in the last week:

2024 Republican primary polling trends by Morning Consult

Jan 2:
• Trump — 45% (+11)
• DeSantis — 34%

Feb 25:
• Trump — 48% (+18)
• DeSantis — 30%

March 14:
• Trump — 52% (+24)
• DeSantis — 28%

MARCH 19:
• Trump — 54% (+28)
• DeSantis — 26% pic.twitter.com/wh35GXRYII

— InteractivePolls (@IAPolls2022) March 21, 2023

No other potential candidate comes close, as former Vice President Mike Pence remained consistent, coming in third place with seven percent support. Presidential candidate Nikki Haley followed with four percent support, and former Rep. Liz Cheney came one point behind with three percent support. No other potential candidate saw greater than one percent support.

Morning Consult described Trump’s lead as such:

Trump Continues to Lead DeSantis: As Trump awaits potential indictment on charges related to a 2016 hush money scheme with adult-film star Stormy Daniels, he has posted one of his largest polling leads in the 2024 Republican primary. The latest survey shows 54% of potential primary voters support the former president, compared with 26% who are backing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, tying his expected opponent’s lowest level of support since tracking began in December.

As has been relatively consistent in prior surveys, a plurality of DeSantis voters, 43 percent, choose Trump as their second-choice candidate, and 46 percent of Trump voters choose DeSantis as their second choice.

The survey was taken March 17-19, 2023, among 3,394 potential Republican primary voters. Notably, Trump announced the impending arrest on Saturday, March 18, meaning this survey was taken in the midst of that news. However, DeSantis did not weigh in on the issue until Monday, March 20, meaning the survey does not necessarily reflect the GOP’s reaction to DeSantis’s position on the matter.

Many conservatives are frustrated with the governor after he condemned the woke leftist prosecutor Alvin Bragg but ultimately concluded that his administration is “not going to be involved” with a “manufactured circus by some Soros [backed] DA.”

“But what I can speak to is that if you have a prosecutor who is ignoring crimes happening every single day in his jurisdiction, and he chooses to go back many, many years ago, to try to use something about porn star hush money payment,” DeSantis said, concluding that he has “real issues” to deal with in Florida.

That did not sit well with several high-profile Republicans, including Trump’s sons and others:

Survey: Donald Trump Boasts Sizable Lead in Texas

March 16, 2023 by Hannah Bleau Leave a Comment

Former President Donald Trump is boasting a sizable lead in Texas’s hypothetical 2024 Republican primary race, a CWS Research/Defend Texas Liberty PAC survey found.

The survey showed Trump leading the pack with 43 percent support. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis came in a distant second with 27 percent support. No other candidate came close, as presidential candidate Nikki Haley placed third with five percent support followed by Sen. Ted Cruz and former Vice President Mike Pence, who garnered four percent support each.

Anti-woke businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, who also formally joined the presidential race, garnered two percent support, while Sen. Tim Scott and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo saw one percent support each.

Overall, 13 percent remain undecided.

The survey represents a boost for Trump and decrease for DeSantis in the Lone Star State over the last two months.

In January, Trump and DeSantis were close, with 36 percent support and 35 percent support, respectively. In other words, Trump has experienced a seven point gain, and DeSantis has seen an eight point loss since January’s survey.

The survey was taken February 28 – March 2, 2023, among 879 2024 Texas Republican primary voters:

2024 Texas Republican Primary:

Trump 43% (+16)
DeSantis 27%
Haley 5%
Pence 4%
Cruz 4%

The survey comes as several other state-level surveys show Trump leading the pack.

For instance, a recent Neighborhood Research and Media poll shows Trump leading in South Carolina by double-digits, and a recent Public Policy Polling survey found Trump leading in the swing state of Pennsylvania by double digits as well:

Here’s the full memo on the South Carolina GOP Poll

Further, an Emerson College Polling survey released this month showed Trump with a 41-point lead over the potential primary field in New Hampshire.

Meanwhile, the latest University of North Florida (UNF) Public Opinion Research Lab (PORL) survey shows DeSantis leading in his home state with 52 percent support.

Poll: McCarthy’s Approval Surges, Far Superior to Paul Ryan’s at Same Point in Speakership

March 15, 2023 by Nick Gilbertson Leave a Comment

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) approval and favorability ratings are surging and are far superior to Paul Ryan’s at a similar point in his speakership.

An Economist/YouGov poll published Wednesday shows that McCarthy has an approval rating of 41 percent and a disapproval rating of 34 percent. This marks a net gain of six percentage points since last week’s survey from the pollster. Among Republican voters, McCarthy has a 62 percent approval rating, while just 17 percent disapprove – a net of plus 45 percent.

In comparison, Ryan, the last GOP speaker, had an overall approval rating of 33 percent after his first two months, with a disapproval rating of 30 percent, a YouGov poll from early January 2016 showed. Among Republicans, his approval rating pinged at 45 percent, with 30 percent disapproving. McCarthy is a net 3o percentage points ahead of where Ryan was with GOP voters at a similar point in his speakership.

McCarthy has also enjoyed substantial gains in favorability week-over-week. He currently has a positive favorability rating of 39 percent and 38 percent who disapprove. This marks a net 12-point gain for the speaker. Among Republicans, 63 percent find him favorable, versus just 22 percent who find him unfavorable, signaling a net-17 point gain since last week.

Ryan, at a comparable point, had favorability and unfavorability ratings of 31 percent and 38 percent, respectively. Just 45 percent of Republicans categorized him as favorable, while 39 percent said he was unfavorable. This marked a net of plus six percentage points, which is 35 points behind where McCarthy currently is.

McCarthy’s surge corresponds with Fox News Anchor Tucker Carlson’s airing of January 6 footage last week that the speaker provided him in February. McCarthy reportedly gave Carlson some 41,000 hours of footage – far more than the 14,000 hours figure that was previously reported. He pledged during an exclusive long-form sit-down interview with Breitbart News Washington Bureau Chief Matthew Boyle last week to fully release all of the videos.

“We just want to make sure we go through them all, and it takes time,” he said. “The first thing that Tucker said too, he didn’t want to show any exits to cause any problems. We asked the Capitol Police, ‘Were there any concerns?’ They came back with one, and we mitigated that, but it was interesting, that one that they had a problem with, Eric Swalwell had had up on the Internet for the last two years showing that part.”

Of the respondents, 42 percent say they approve of McCarthy’s decision to give Carson access to the tapes, while 38 percent do not agree with the move. Sixty-one percent of republicans support the speaker’s decision.

The poll sampled 1,500 U.S. adults from March 10-14, and the weighted margin of error is plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.
