Rand Paul: Fauci & the left's COVID narrative are IMPLODING as the pandemic drags on

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) joined BlazeTV host Dave Rubin on “The Rubin Report,” to talk about his most recent feud with Dr. Anthony Fauci.

On Tuesday, Paul confronted Fauci once again — this time with
emails that indicate he conspired to discredit scientists who disagreed with his opinions on COVID-19. In response, Fauci accused Paul of inspiring “the crazies out there” to make “threats upon my life, [and] harassment of my family and my children”.

Dave shared a video clip from the Senate hearing in which Paul says to Fauci:

I’ve always been pro vaccine. I’m just simply against authoritarianism and against mandates. The anger that’s developed with you, Dr. Fauci, is that you don’t want to give us advice, you want to tell us what to do. You think you are the science, and that anybody [who] responds to you [is asked] ‘How dare you? How dare you criticize science?’ as if you somehow are science.

That kind of arrogance, that hubris, is really, that’s where the anger’s coming towards you. If you were one doctor among hundreds of doctors in the government who gave advice … people might object to your advice, but there wouldn’t be such a degree of anger. But you are so certain that you’re right, that you’re not wiling to hear anyone else.

Three epidemiologists, of which you are not even an epidemiologist, but three epidemiologists, prominent in their field [from] Oxford, Stanford, and Harvard, you maligned them. You spoke openly with Dr. Collins and you did not disagree [to] paint them as fringe. You went after them and said we will do a public take down, not in Science or Nature or Lancet, but in Wired, in The Nation, a left-wing publication. You’ve engaged in base politics. You wonder why there’s so much anger? You’re not an objective scientist. You’ve lost that long ago. And so many of the things that people want, they want to know why you’re forcing their children to be vaccinated when 95% of people at risk have been vaccinated. Over 95% of people over [age] 65. It’s a huge, voluntary success. And yet you won’t rest until you force every child to get this. So yes, there’s a great deal of dissatisfaction with you and many people want you to go, but nobody wishes you violence.

Paul told Dave our nation has probably never had a government bureaucrat with so much power over all our lives, or so much disdain for individual liberty.

Dave noted a shift in the left’s COVID narrative, such as many in the mainstream media admitting that the vaccine, masks, and lockdowns “don’t quite work as promised” or inflated death counts from COVID-19. Paul agreed, saying he believes the Biden administration’s COVID narrative is collapsing in front of our eyes. From the CDC acknowledging that 75% of those who died from COVID had
at least four comorbidities, to the Biden administration admitting there are more deaths from COVID-19 under Biden than under former President Trump, the current administration is realizing that they’ve got some explaining to do. And the best way to do that is to admit COVID is something “we’re gonna have to live with,” Paul said.

After new information came out that suggests Dr. Anthony Fauci intimidated and bribed scientists into dismissing the COVID-19 lab-leak theory, Sen. Rand Paul and Fauci got into a heated debate in a Senate hearing. But instead of providing answers, Fauci accused Sen. Paul of endangering him.

Sen. Paul joined “The Glenn Beck Program” Wednesday with his response and explained why he believes “people live in fear of what [Fauci] will do to them.”

“It’s all about money. If you cross Tony Fauci, you don’t get your money. He controls the purse strings for the entire country, the entire university system. And he’s been doing it for forty years,” Sen. Paul began.

“It’s consistent with his arrogance, this level of arrogance that he’s developed. He said several weeks ago, that he is science and any attack on him is an attack on science. Yesterday, he said anybody who opposes him is encouraging death threats,” he added.

“Look, I’ve been on the receiving end of semi-automatic gunfire. I was 20 yards away from Steve Scalise when he almost died. I was 10 feet away from a staffer that was shot. And, you know what? The guy doing the shooting was a Bernie Sanders supporter. But not one of us, not one of the Republicans on the ball field, said, ‘Oh, it was Bernie Sanders’ fault.’ But that’s the juvenile level of personal attack that Fauci is now stooping to. He is saying that the personal threats he gets are actually the fault of his critics.”

Sen. Paul continued, “But the thing is, [Fauci] needs to answer the question. Everything he did in the committee yesterday was misdirection so he didn’t have to answer the question. The question was, why did he smear three scientists from Stanford, Oxford, and Harvard? Why did he smear them as fringe epidemiologists? And why did he conspire against Francis Collins to take them down in a very public way? He wouldn’t answer the question.”

Fauci’s Complaint

I would like to extend and amplify one little bit of Michael’s excellent post this morning and say this: Anthony Fauci should stop complaining about the obscene phone calls and the death threats.

Unhappily, this sort of thing now is part of the ordinary daily business of anybody who is in public life — and Fauci is a practically inescapable public figure. But his nemesis in this matter, Senator Rand Paul, gets the same thing. (Senator Paul has in fact been physically assaulted.) But even considerably less well-known figures endure a more or less regular barrage of threats, obscenity, and the like. I do. People on cable-news shows do. People who are big on social media do. And though I am not much of a feminist, I would suggest to anybody who wants a genuinely horrifying account of this sort of thing to ask virtually any woman in public life about it.

But to do what Fauci is doing — to treat the ravings and rhetorical misdeeds of the lunatics as though they discredited ordinary political disagreement — is dishonest; worse, it encourages the very thing that Fauci complains about by elevating and amplifying it. We should treat it like what it is: the almost always inconsequential ravings of people who are fixated on some public figure or public controversy but whose rage and psychic incontinence more often are rooted in personal inadequacies and unrelated anxieties — people who started off shaking with rage and then looked around until they could find something or someone to hitch it to. People who need to physically protect themselves should do so, of course, but cynically exploiting the outpourings of mentally incompetent people on Twitter or down in the comments section amounts to very little more than petty political advantage-seeking.

Sen. Rand Paul accuses Fauci of 'ignorant sort of personal attacks' against fellow scientists

Dr. Anthony Fauci and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) got into another tense exchange on Capitol Hill Tuesday when Paul accused the White House’s chief medical adviser of conspiring to discredit scientists who disagreed with his opinions on COVID-19. Fauci in turn accused Paul of “distorting” everything about him and inspiring threats and harassment against him and his family.

“Dr. Fauci, the idea that a government official like yourself would claim unilaterally to represent science and that any criticism of you is criticism of science itself is quite dangerous,” Paul said. “Central planning, whether it be of the economy or of science, is risky because of the fallibility of the planner.”

The Kentucky Republican said that as a government official “who rules by mandate” Fauci’s “errors” compound and harm millions of Americans. He said Fauci used government resources “to smear and to destroy the reputations of other scientists who disagree with him.” Paul quoted from an email former National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins sent to Fauci ordering him to carry out a “quick and devastating takedown” of a statement by public health experts calling for “focused protection” of the most vulnerable people to COVID-19. Fauci referred to the public health experts as “fringe” in that email.

A clearly annoyed Fauci said that Paul, “in usual fashion,” was “distorting everything about me.”

The two spent several minutes talking over one another, each growing angrier as time went on. Fauci accused Paul of using “personal attacks” against him that “have no relevance to reality.”

“You accuse me of, in a monolithic way, telling people what they need to do. Everything that I’ve said has been in support of the CDC guidelines: Wear a mask, get boosted,” Fauci said.

“So I would like to make something clear to the committee. He’s doing this for political reasons,” Fauci added, an accusation to which Paul vocally objected and the two began talking over each other again.

After the committee chairwoman interrupted the back-and-forth, Fauci complained about Paul’s behavior and claimed that at the last hearing Paul had suggested he was “responsible for the death of 4 to 5 million people, which is really irresponsible.”

“What happens when he gets out and accuses me of things that are completely untrue is that all of the sudden that kindles the crazies out there, and I have threats upon my life, harassment of my family, and my children with obscene phone calls because people are lying about me,” Fauci said.

He referred to the December arrest of 25-year-old Kuachua Brillion Xiong, a California resident who was found to have a “hit list” with Fauci’s name on it when he was pulled over on Interstate 80 in Iowa, the New York Post reported.

“They found in his car an AR-15 and multiple magazines of ammunition,” Fauci said, “because he thinks that maybe I’m killing people.”

He held up printouts of a fundraising page from Paul’s campaign website that urges people to donate in order to “Fire Dr. Fauci,” accusing Paul of “making a catastrophic epidemic for your political gain.”

Paul began to speak but committee chairwoman Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) cut in, ending the exchange.

Responding later, Paul said Fauci’s implication that Paul was responsible for the threats against him was “insulting.”


“Dr. Fauci, it’s disappointing for you to suggest that people who dare to question you are responsible somehow for violent threats. Realize that by attacking me, you’re attacking the one member who actually has suffered from violent attacks,” Paul said, recounting his experience at the 2017 Congressional Baseball Shooting.

“For you to somehow suggest that somehow I or people who dare to oppose you are responsible for threats, that’s insulting. The person who shot at us and almost killed [Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.)] was a rabid supporter of Bernie Sanders. But the one thing you’ll find if you look at the record is that not one of us accused Bernie Sanders of being responsible for that,” he continued.

“So this is the kind of ignorant sort of personal attacks that you engaged in. You engaged in these attacks with fellow scientists.”

It’s no surprise that Anthony Fauci, who believes attacks on him are “attacks on science,” is extraordinarily thin-skinned. But today, after being grilled by Senator Rand Paul over his involvement in concerted attacks on apostate scientists, Fauci deflected by noting that a man who’d threatened to kill him had been arrested a couple of weeks ago. Fauci went on to, in part, blame Paul for threats against him, claiming that Paul’s accusations “kindle the crazies,” and even pulled out a printed copy of a “Fire Fauci” headline from the senator’s website.

Is Fauci really arguing that calling for his firing — from a job he’s held since 1984 — is tantamount to inciting violence? Does that go for the Democratic Party rhetoric that motivated a Bernie Sanders fan who attempted to murder, among other Republicans, Paul on a baseball field in Alexandria in 2017? Or progressive rhetoric that motivated a mob to menace Paul and his wife on D.C.’s streets in 2020? Nothing in Paul’s critique of Fauci calls for any violence. It calls for a mendacious government official to be fired because he’s been awful at his job. Even if Paul is wrong, political discourse shouldn’t be inhibited by the prospective actions of third-party nuts. We don’t let those nuts undercut our ability to freely express our political disagreements. Those who do are usually engaged in a transparent attempt to chill speech.
