Joe Biden Visits Striking Auto Workers in Michigan for 12 Minutes Before Jetting Off to Elitist Bay Area Fundraiser

September 27, 2023 by Nick Gilbertson Leave a Comment

President Joe Biden visited with striking autoworkers in Michigan for only twelve minutes on Wednesday before jetting off to a California fundraiser.

Biden did not hang around for even half an hour with union members of the United Autoworkers (UAW) in Wayne County. The Washington Post’s stream of the event shows he arrived as picketers marched in a circle chanting, “What do we want? Contracts! When do we want it? Now!”

Biden spoke from a bullhorn for just over one minute after his entrance before turning it over to UAW President Shawn Fain.

“Folks, stick with it. You deserve the significant raise you need and other benefits,” Biden said.

He spoke briefly again before leaving the event 12 minutes after he arrived, the Daily Mail noted, as John Mellencamp’s “Small Town” played.

As Breitbart News has documented, autoworkers are striking for wage increases against Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis in the wake of 40-year-high inflation under Biden’s administration, which has significantly diminished the buying power of the dollar compared to when former President Donald Trump left office.

Another chief concern among autoworkers is Biden’s electric vehicle agenda, as they seek assurances from automakers and the federal government that it will not devastate their jobs or wages, Breitbart News reported.

After briefly meeting with the union workers, Biden jetted off to California on Air Force One for an elitist Democrat fundraiser in Atherton in the Bay Area, where tickets began at $5,000 and capped at $100,000, NBC Bay Area reported.

“$100,000 dinners are something 99% of Americans have no hope of ever participating in,” Cal State East Bay Professor and Political Analyst Nolan Higdon told the outlet. “The fact that people in the Atherton area can come up with that type of money, it tells you exactly why he’s having a campaign meeting here in the Bay Area.”

Biden’s visit to Michigan came a day before Trump is set to appear with striking workers of the UAW in Detroit as counter-programming to the Republican presidential debate on Wednesday. Notably, Biden only announced he would attend the picket line after Trump’s plan to deliver a “prime time speech before current and former” UAW workers in Detroit was revealed.

Trump has been adamant that the “Electric Car SCAM” is selling the UAW “down the ‘drain.’”

“They’ll be made in China, under Crooked Joe’s CHINA FIRST POLICY. AUTOWORKERS, VOTE FOR TRUMP – I’LL MAKE YOU VICTORIOUS & RICH,” he wrote in a Truth Social post earlier this month.

“IF YOUR ‘LEADERS’ WON’T ENDORSE ME, VOTE  THEM OUT OF OFFICE, NOW. WITH THE DEMOCRATS & CROOKED JOE CALLING THE SHOTS, YOU’LL BE JOBLESS & PENNILESS WITHIN 4 YEARS,” he added.

Chuck Schumer Strikes Alongside United Auto Workers as Biden Plays Catchup with Trump

September 26, 2023 by Hannah Bleau Leave a Comment

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is the latest to join striking United Auto Workers (UAW) members on the picket line, speaking with members and holding up a sign in Tappan, New York, as Democrats attempt to halt former President Donald Trump’s courtship of the strikers.

“We’re going to fight until we win,” Schumer said, explaining that his father, a “union guy,” told him, “When you’re doing the right thing, when you’re doing something important, look in your heart, make sure it’s the right thing.”

“And then if you persist and persist and persist, God will reward you, and you’ll succeed. We are going to persist, and we’re going to succeed,” he declared.

“Thanks for standing with #UAW members, @SenSchumer,” the UAW said.

Schumer’s appearance coincided with President Joe Biden picketing alongside UAW members in Michigan — a move he made only after Trump, his likely 2024 rival, announced his trip there in lieu of participating in the Republican primary debate.

As Breitbart News detailed, “The UAW has walked off the job at General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis plants in an effort to push for higher wages, amid high inflation and lavish government subsidies on electric vehicles (EV) — both features of ‘Bidenomics.’”

Further, the UAW, which endorsed Biden in 2020, has yet to make a 2024 endorsement.

“Wall Street didn’t build the country. The middle class built the country. Unions built the middle class,” Biden said, adding, “Let’s keep going; you deserve what you’ve earned, and you deserve a hell of a lot more than what you’re getting paid now.”

He failed to mention his administration’s push for electric vehicles (EVs) or mass inflation contributing to ongoing wage issues, which some identify as causes of the strike.

Trump has continued to court the union members, warning them that Biden’s green agenda will kill Michigan’s auto industry and boost China.

“The Great State of Michigan will not have an auto industry anymore if Crooked Joe Biden’s crazed concept of ‘all Electric Cars’ goes into effect,” Trump said in a Labor Day post on Truth Social, warning, “CHINA WILL TAKE IT ALL, 100%. United Auto Workers, VOTE FOR TRUMP.”

“Get your leaders to ENDORSE ME, I WILL KEEP ALL OF THESE GREAT JOBS, AND BRING IN MANY MORE. CHOICE IN SCHOOLS, AND CHOICE IN CARS!!!” he added.

Joe Biden Fails to Mention His China-Friendly Electric Vehicle Mandates in Visit with Striking Auto Workers

September 26, 2023 by John Binder Leave a Comment

On Tuesday, President Joe Biden visited members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) who are striking against General Motors (GM), Ford, and Stellantis. The president, though, failed to make mention his Electric Vehicle (EV) mandates which are partly responsible for the strike.

Tens of thousands of auto workers are striking against the Big Three across the United States, looking to secure a new labor contract that includes wage increases to keep up with Biden’s record inflation and commitments that their jobs will not be eliminated by Biden’s green energy agenda which includes EV mandates.

During his 12-minute visit with UAW members in Wayne County, Michigan, Biden spoke for only 87 seconds and did not mention his EV agenda or even attempt to sell it as a bonus for auto workers. Biden left the strike to jet off to California for a blitz of fundraisers with wealthy donors, some with connections to Hollywood.

As Breitbart News Economics Editor John Carney has detailed, Biden’s EV mandates are partly responsible for the auto industry strike, as well as inflation:

No wonder one of the top demands of the UAW is the return of cost-of-living adjustments. The companies have offered to pay inflation bonuses to help repair the damage inflation has done to the earning power of workers. To accept that, however, unions would have to once against trust that inflation will be contained. Given the betrayal of the last promise is still a fresh wound, that is a very big ask. [Emphasis added]

The betrayal of the autoworkers by the Biden administration goes beyond inflation, 0f course. The Biden administration has been pushing policies to electrify most new vehicles within a decade or so. That rush toward electric vehicles will mean a rapid decline in payrolls for autoworkers—even as the automakers enjoy Inflation Reduction Act subsidies. Although the Biden administration claims there will be many new “clean and green” jobs, no plausible estimates see a net increase in employment for autoworkers from the transition. You don’t need as many people on the electric vehicle assembly line as you do to build a gas-fueled car. It also has not gone without notice by the unions that many of the proposed new green manufacturing plants are in anti-union, right-to-work states. [Emphasis added]

Even if you are a big believer in the notion that climate change is an existential threat that requires transformation and sacrifice, how can requiring an outsized sacrifice by autoworkers be justified? If we are all to benefit from rushing the process to electric vehicles, why are autoworkers left paying the price? [Emphasis added]

Last week, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) blasted Biden for his EV mandates, warning that such a rapid transition to green energy will ultimately offshore the U.S. auto industry to China.

“The more the Big Three’s business model relies on global supply chains and non-union labor, the less the UAW can effectively push for higher wages,” Vance wrote in an op-ed. “Their leverage decreases every time a consumer buys a car made without an Ohio worker, and yet the policies of the Biden administration are explicitly designed to shift the auto industry offshore.”

Former President Trump has similarly called out Biden and is planning his visit with UAW members for tomorrow in Michigan.

“The auto workers will not have any jobs … because all of these cars are going to be made in China. The electric cars, automatically, are going to be made in China,” Trump said this month.

Indeed, China dominates the EV supply chain — a fact that will almost certainly ensure that EVs sold in the U.S. market will be, in one way or another, produced or sourced in China.

Currently, China controls critical components needed for EV batteries, including nearly 70 percent of the world’s lithium, 95 percent of manganese, 73 percent of cobalt, 70 percent of graphite, and 63 percent of nickel.

China also controls the parts needed to go into an EV battery.

About 77 percent of cathodes are made in China, along with 74 percent of separators, 82 percent of electrolytes, 92 percent of anodes, 73 percent of NMC cathodes, and 99 percent of LFP cathodes.

“Those jobs are all going to be gone, because all of those electric cars are going to be made in China,” Trump has said of Biden’s EV mandates. “That’s what’s happening.”

Summers: Deal on Battery Plants Between UAW, Big 3 Will Be Harder to Reach than an Agreement on Wage Increase

September 23, 2023 by Ian Hanchett Leave a Comment

During an interview aired on Friday’s edition of Bloomberg’s “Wall Street Week,” Harvard Professor, economist, Director of the National Economic Council under President Barack Obama, and Treasury Secretary under President Bill Clinton Larry Summers argued that it will be more difficult for the UAW and automakers to reach an agreement on things like battery plants for electric vehicles than it will be to reach an agreement on the size of wage increases or pensions.

Summers stated, “Look, it’s always easier to compromise on numbers…like how big is the wage increase going to be, than it is on principles, like what’s going to happen to the battery factories. It’s easier to compromise on numbers, like the size of pension packages, than it is on questions like changing the separate wage structure for recently hired workers. So, they’ve still got questions of principle as well as questions of numbers separating them. So, this may go on for a while.”

He continued, “And I think there are two big questions: One is, what will the spillover be to the larger economy and to the Midwestern economy, including through price increases, if cars get scarce, what that means for automobile and used car prices? I also think there are some real questions here about when you have these highly publicized labor conflicts and you see what’s likely to be a big number for the wage increase. I suspect that’s going to give a lot of workers, in a lot of places, some pretty big ideas, and that may be a source of wage pressure as well, which complicates the issues around inflation. So, this is a very difficult thing to manage, and I suspect it’s going to be one of those things that will be with us for quite a while.”

UAW Expands Strike to 38 GM and Stellantis Facilities, Praises Ford As ‘Serious’ In Negotiations

September 22, 2023 by John Carney Leave a Comment

The United Auto Workers union is expanding its strike to 38 more facilities owned by General Motors and Stellantis. The facilities are located in 20 states across the U.S.

The escalation will spare Ford Motor Co. UAW President Shawn Fain praised Ford in a Fadebook live stream on Friday for showing it is “serious about reaching a deal.” The union is currently on strike at one Ford factory in Michigan.

The strike, which began Sept. 14, is the first time the UAW has staged walkouts at all three of the Big Three automakers at the same time. In the new “stand up” strike strategy, the union announces the locations of walkout just hours before they begin.

Fain said the expansion of the strike is a “response to the lack of progress with GM and Stellantis.”

“We will shut down parts distribution until those 2 companies come to their senses,” Fain said.

— AFL-CIO ✊ (@AFLCIO) September 22, 2023

Fain said that Ford has agreed to reinstate cost of living adjustments in worker contracts, a key demand from the union that has seen its membership’s pay eroded by Bidenflation.

The strategy allows some plants to keep operating while targeting others for shutdown. It is designed to give the union more flexibility to expand or limit the strike depending on negotiations. The strategy could also allow the walkout to last longer than expected because it creates less of a demand on the union’s strike funds.

The additional factories will be subject to a walkout as of 12:00 p.m. local time, Fain said.

By expanding the strike against GM and Stellantis, the union may be hoping to gain leverage in negotiations. If Ford is able to keep up production longer than its rivals, that could allow it to capture market share if the strike stretches on for long enough to create supply shortages. GM and Stellantis could find themselves with dealers undersupplied with cars while Ford’s dealers could still have new cars on their lots.

Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated the number of states impacted by the strike expansion.
