‘Envious’, Would ‘Love to Have’ Return of Conscription Says UK Defence Minister

March 30, 2023 by Oliver JJ Lane Leave a Comment

The British defence minister appeared to have an unguarded moment on Wednesday, heaping praise on Sweden for having brought back conscription and saying he’d like to do the same, before his office moved to walk the comments back hours later.

An expression of admiration for Sweden and Finland conscripting their young people into mandatory military service, which leaves all with shared military experience and a high proportion continuing to serve in the reserve forces in their civilian lives, came from the British defence minister Wednesday.

Speaking alongside the Swedish defence minister after talks between the men in London, UK Defence boss Ben Wallace told reporters: “I think we’re all envious of both Sweden and Finland and their reserves. Part of that is a different cultural thing, part of it is those countries have had conscription continually”.

Sweden ended conscription in 2010 after over a century of continual operation, but a changing security picture in Europe including concerns about Russia and an inability to recruit enough soldiers voluntarily saw it return from 2017. Men and women are recruited on an equal basis, one of the only countries in the world to do so, but not everybody serves, with the government selecting a few thousand out of the pool of eligible teenagers every year.

Wallace particularly commented on the success of the return of the programme, saying Sweden had “re-invigorated” conscription, “and actually with great success.”

Continuing, the minister said: “So I think conscription and reserves often go hand-in-hand because everyone’s done it. I definitely think we’re all envious of how they use their reserves and I’d love to have a model like that, and I think we’ve got to recognise the lessons of Ukraine: how do we work on our resilience?”.

While the minister’s comments seemed pretty clear cut in that he described the means by which Sweden increased its reserve forces and then went on to say “I’d love to have a model like that”, his office nevertheless immediately tried to walk back his comments, which clearly are not in line with present British policy. As Agence France-Press noted in their report, edited to tone down Wallace’s comments and to incorporate the rowing-back in a later revision, the Ministry of Defence in London “denied that Wallace was himself calling for a return of national service, but was underscoring the ‘positive impact’ of reservists in Finland and Sweden.”

The wire service quoted a defence spokesman who clarified the remarks: “He praised the reservist models in those countries and did not in any way state he wanted to introduce conscription in the UK”.

Whatever minister Wallace meant when he was speaking, his comments certainly appeared to underline longstanding frustration over the inability of the British armed forces to recruit enough new people to keep the services at strength, a problem which has existed for many years. Remarkably, the outright shortage of troops continues despite the armed forces being slashed to a historically small size not seen since before the Napoleonic Wars, and the Royal Navy cut to a shadow of its former self.

The causes of this recruitment failure are broad, but low pay, “unacceptable” living conditions, and the gradual erosion of the Army’s traditions and culture all have their parts to play. Lower unemployment nationally, with the military seen as a job of last resort in some communities, and the highly publicised failure of the government to protect veterans from being dragged through the courts by victims both real and imagined of wars fought decades ago are also factors.

Conscription would certainly overcome some of these problems — by force — but brings its own problems, not least the moral implication of pressing young people into the armed forces, and the cost of putting hundreds of thousands of new recruits under arms. It was done in recent memory, however, with post-Second World War-era conscription not actually ending until 1960.

Many, if not most people in the United Kingdom will have a parent or grandparent who performed 18 months of compulsory military service or wartime service, if not even experiencing it themselves.

Ben Wallace’s comments on conscription in full:

I think we’re all envious of both Sweden and Finland and their reserves. Part of that is a different cultural thing, part of it is those countries have had conscription continually. Sweden paused it for seven years and have re-invigorated it, and actually with great success.

So I think conscription and reserves often go hand-in-hand because everyone’s done it. I definitely think we’re all envious of how they use their reserves and I’d love to have a model like that, and I think we’ve got to recognise the lessons of Ukraine: how do we work on our resilience? And part of that is about reserves, especially as the modern armed forces need more and more specialists, specialists you don’t need to use all the time. Specialists you need to access in times of war, particularly in areas like cyber, etcetera.

The greater requirement for reserves, we’re not going to pay people to sit around and do nothing when they’re highly specialised, but we are going to hopefully pay them when they’re reservists, to use them to mobilise at key moments and I think that will be really important.

Somali Whose Son Died in Fatal Shooting Blames Swedish People, Racism

March 24, 2023 by Chris Tomlinson Leave a Comment

A man who lost his son to a fatal shooting in 2021 has blamed structural racism and Swedes for not keeping residents of his community safe and not arresting the suspects who shot his son.

Somali migrant Jama Omar, a resident of the Stockholm no-go suburb of Rinkeby, lost his son to a fatal shooting in August of 2021 and so far police have not managed to arrest any suspects in the case.

“You have children, raise them and when your son turns 20, someone shoots him. And all is lost. Everything you invested is gone,” Omar told the newspaper Aftonbladet and added that he dd not believe the legal system in Sweden worked.

“Shootings are happening all over Sweden, but have hit the Somali community extra hard. The state is responsible for the safety of residents, but we do not consider our children to be included in that protection,” he said.

Omar added that he blamed racism from Swedes for the current situation saying, “Everything that happens to us here, it doesn’t happen everywhere in the world. We have come here and then it feels like Swedes and the authorities think they own us. Dogs have more value than our children here.”

“Even 20-year-olds, girls and boys, want to move out of the country now. They do not want to have children here in Sweden. It is the result of the irresponsibility of the state. We came here and now we have started moving again, after 30 years. We don’t want that to continue,” he said.

“There is no humanity in them. When meeting them, they show in their face that they do not like you. How can I communicate with such people? Who already deep down hates you,” Omar said, referring to local police officers.

Omar called on Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson to meet with him to discuss ongoing issues with shootings and gangs but stated, “We can’t meet him when there are 100 police officers walking around here in Rinkeby. He says what he wants and disappears from here.”

“If the state asks us to say what we think we should do if they want to hear our opinions, then we can talk to them. We can say that we believe that it will be better if you do so and so. But no one has asked for our opinions,” he stated.

Sweden saw a record number of fatal shootings last year and since the Christmas Day shooting murder of well-known gangster Mehdi ”Dumle” Sachit, the Stockholm region has seen a surge of gang-related violence including shootings and bombings.

Sweden Sending Police Officers To Ukraine To Investigate Russian War Crimes

March 21, 2023 by Chris Tomlinson Leave a Comment

The Swedish government has announced it will be sending a delegation of police to Ukraine to investigate possible war crimes committed by Russian forces during the invasion of Ukraine.

Swedish Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer, a member of the centre-right Moderates, announced that he believed Russia had committed war crimes in the country. The announcement follows the issuing of an arrest warrant for President Putin by an international court on war crimes allegations.

“We are at a point where it is no longer a question of if all the war crimes that Russia is guilty of in Ukraine should be prosecuted, but how it should be done,” Strömmer said, Swedish broadcaster SVT reports.

Along with contributing around £550,000/$675,000 and sending three prosecutors and six investigators to work on looking into Russian war crimes, the Swedish police authority will also be sending officers to a field office in Kyiv.

— Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) March 17, 2023

“The field office is being set up right now and will grow over time. At the initial stage, it is a matter of hiring three investigators from the Swedish side,” Strömmer said.

The allocation of the funding and the deployment of officers comes despite Sweden itself being desperately short of experienced police officers, with the country struggling to face down spiking levels of violent crime.

The Swedish move is in cooperation with the  International Criminal Court (ICC), which put out an arrest warrant last week for Russian President Vladimir Putin after accusing the Russian leader of carrying out war crimes.

ICC president President Judge Piotr Hofmański spoke out about the warrant for Putin and  Russia’s Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Alekseyevna, which claims that Russia has kidnapped children from Ukraine and moved them to Russia.

“It is forbidden by international law for occupying powers to transfer civilians from the territory they live in to other territories,” ICC president President Judge Piotr Hofmański said Friday.

How the arrests will be executed is unclear as Russia pulled out of the Rome Statute agreement for the ICC in 2016 and Ukraine had never ratified the statute, although the country did sign it. The United States is also not a party to the court and has previously threatened it over potential war crimes investigations over its pursual of the Afghanistan war.

The arrest warrants came just days after Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly announced that regime change in Moscow was the end goal in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“We’re able to see how much we’re isolating the Russian regime right now — because we need to do so economically, politically and diplomatically — and what are the impacts also on society, and how much we’re seeing potential regime change in Russia,” Joly said.

“The goal is definitely to do that, is to weaken Russia’s ability to launch very difficult attacks against Ukraine. We want also to make sure that Putin and his enablers are held to account,” she noted.
