Report: ‘Hamilton 68’ Falsely Labeled David Horowitz a Russian ‘Bot’

January 29, 2023 by Joel B. Pollak Leave a Comment

Journalist Matt Taibbi has published an exposé of a left-wing project called “Hamilton 68” that falsely labeled hundreds of Twitter accounts as Russian “bots” — including that of well-known conservative David Horowitz.

As Breitbart News reported on Friday, citing Taibbi’s reporting as part of the “#TwitterFiles” investigation:

The latest batch of the Twitter Files shows that senior officials at the company, including the much-maligned Yoel Roth, were shocked at false allegations that American and British users of the platform were part of Russian influence operations.

The allegations came from Hamilton 68, a “dashboard” claiming to identify Russia-linked accounts on Twitter that was funded by the Alliance for Securing Democracy.

The project was led by Clint Watts, a former counterintelligence official at the FBI. The ASD advisory board at the time included former NSA chief Michael Chertoff, who was tapped to review the Biden Administration’s “disinformation governance board” last year, former Hillary Clinton campaign chief John Podesta, and arch-neoconservative Bill Kristol.

Twitter was aware that Hamilton 68’s allegations were mostly false. Meanwhile, the Hamilton 68 project allegedly provided the basis for articles in the mainstream media smearing conservatives, as Taibbi noted:

If one goes by volume alone, this oft-cited neoliberal think-tank that spawned hundreds of fraudulent headlines and TV news segments may go down as the single greatest case of media fabulism in American history. Virtually every major news organization in America is implicated, including NBC, CBS, ABC, PBS, CNN, MSNBC, The New York Times and the Washington Post. Mother Jones alone did at least 14 stories pegged to the group’s “research.” Even fact-checking sites like Politifact and Snopes cited Hamilton 68 as a source.

Taibbi noted that Horowitz — a former left-wing radical-turned-conservative who founded the David Horowitz Freedom Center — was among several Americans smeared by the project, including some left-wing voices:

Even Twitter execs were stunned to read who was listed. The names ranged from well-known media figures like David Horowitz to conservatives like Dennis Michael Lynch and progressives like Consortium editor Joe Lauria. It’s crucial to understand that the list captured not just Trump supporters but a range of political dissidents, including leftists, anarchists and humorists.

Critics are calling on the media publications who relied on Hamilton 68 in past coverage to publish corrections.

Weaponization Committee Republicans Lay Groundwork for Investigations

January 28, 2023 by Ashley Oliver Leave a Comment

Republicans on the newly created Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government met for the first time Friday to begin mapping out their investigative pursuits.

The closed-door meeting included all of the subcommittee’s GOP members, aside from Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL), who was home recovering from a serious accident, according to a source present at the meeting.

“There’s a lot for us to do. That’s really clear, and that’s just in the course of the discussion we had,” Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC) said as he emerged from the meeting room.

The subcommittee was established via a resolution this month along partisan lines and was given sweeping authority to investigate federal government agencies, such as the Justice Department (DOJ) and FBI, for alleged civil liberties violations.

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) noted to reporters after the meeting, however, that the subcommittee’s mandate was “much broader” than those two agencies.

“Obviously Twitter was weaponized, and that’s not DOJ only,” Issa said.

Judiciary Committee and subcommittee chair Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), who met with Twitter CEO Elon Musk this week, has said he plans to delve into the “Twitter files,” which, among their many revelations, showed an elaborate coordination between the FBI and the social media platform in the leadup to the 2020 election and beyond.

Jordan has also been vocal about his intentions to investigate the several whistleblower complaints he has vetted over the past year, including complaints related to DOJ’s past handling of tensions at school board meetings, its approach to January 6 investigations, and other concerns about department bias.

While it is unclear if those probes will take place through the Judiciary Committee or the new subcommittee, Issa said after the Republicans’ meeting Friday that they had already scheduled “several” transcribed interviews.

“I would imagine that we will be, like most investigation committees, disproportionately doing transcribed interviews and depositions. … It’s not about showing to the public,” Issa said, emphasizing the word “showing.” “It’s about real investigation, and then making it public,” Issa said.

Jordan told Republicans during the meeting Friday, according to a report from CNN, that the subcommittee also planned to adopt a rule used by former Oversight Committee chair Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) to issue subpoenas without consulting Democrats in advance, signaling the GOP is planning to be aggressive in interviewing and, where necessary, deposing its subjects.

The subcommittee is set to have 21 members, with 12 already-appointed GOP members and nine Democrats, whom Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) is expected to choose in the coming days.

Democrats, although they appear poised to participate in the subcommittee, voted unanimously against its creation.

Jeffries has ripped the panel as “insurrection protection,” while Judiciary Committee ranking member Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) has contended it would demonize law enforcement and also “protect Donald Trump,” whose Mar-a-Lago residence was the target of an unprecedented FBI raid last year.

Elon Musk Meets with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Capitol Hill

January 26, 2023 by Jordan Dixon-Hamilton and Ashley Oliver Leave a Comment

Twitter CEO Elon Musk traveled to Capitol Hill on Thursday and met with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to discuss how Twitter can be “fair to both parties,” Musk said on his social media platform.

Musk noted he also met with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY). The meeting with Jeffries may have been unplanned, as McCarthy reportedly offered to introduce the pair while they were both in his office, according to the Hill.

“Just met with @SpeakerMcCarthy & @RepJeffries to discuss ensuring that this platform is fair to both parties,” Musk tweeted.

In addition to meeting with McCarthy and Jeffries, Breitbart News observed Judiciary Committee chair Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) entering McCarthy’s office after Jeffries had left. Jordan spent nearly an hour in the Speaker’s office while Musk was still there.

Jordan, who will also chair the Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, has said he plans to delve into the “Twitter files,” including their revelation that the FBI paid Twitter $3.4 million for working with the agency.

McCarthy, who turned 58 on Thursday, joked after the meeting that Musk visited Capitol Hill to wish him a happy birthday.

“He came to wish me happy birthday,” McCarthy said while emerging from the peaker’s office, according to Bloomberg. “We’ve been friends for years.”

Musk is a “longtime McCarthy donor,” the outlet noted. In fact, Musk spoke at a Republican retreat last summer in Wyoming that McCarthy hosted.

When a reporter asked McCarthy if he spoke with Musk about the debt ceiling, McCarthy said, “No,” per Bloomberg.
