Zoom meetings can painful. Especially if your employer is one of those who insist everything should be a meeting when it could just as easily be an email. They’re agonizing.
But you’re probably not going to be shot by your own kid during one.
Unfortunately, one woman was fatally shot after her toddler got hold of a firearm and pulled the trigger. Now, the father has been charged over that.
Veondre Avery, 22, was taken into custody by the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office and the Altamonte Springs Police Department Tuesday. He is charged with manslaughter and failure to securely store a firearm in connection with the Aug. 11 death of Shamaya Lynn, the Seminole-Brevard State Attorney’s Office said.
The 2-year-old child found the weapon and shot Lynn in the head, investigators said.
Now, I don’t like mandatory storage laws. I vehemently oppose them.
What I don’t mind is someone’s irresponsibility leading to criminal charges because they were a complete and absolute moron.
Avery didn’t mean for the kid to get the gun and he damn sure didn’t mean for his girlfriend to be shot and killed, but here we are. His irresponsibility led to her death, regardless of any other factors, and now he’s facing prison time for that act.
Honestly, why would you leave a firearm in a Paw Patrol backpack? Is it any wonder the kid picked up the gun? It was his freaking backpack for crying out loud!
When we talk about senseless deaths, this is precisely the kind of thing we’re talking about.
If there’s anything approaching an upside, it’s that the kid is so young he’ll probably not remember doing this. He still needs therapy and I hope he gets it, but he won’t have to live with the memory of pulling the trigger and shooting his own mother. Of course, he’s also so young he won’t actually remember his mother either.
And yeah, Avery is the reason why.
Folks, secure your weapons. Keep them out of children’s hands. For the love of all that is Holy, don’t put them in a kid’s backpack, and especially don’t then leave that backpack on the floor.
Avery is now facing a prison sentence because of what appears to be absolute stupidity. I can’t really muster much in the way of sympathy. There’s so much information out there on how to properly store your firearms. There’s no reason to not know how to secure them. Guns are sold with gun locks. Local police departments will give you one if you need it. They make it ridiculously easy to get one because they don’t want things like this to happen.
Don’t want to lock your guns up? Then keep them on your person so your child won’t be able to grab them. That is, in my opinion, even better since then it’s also in reach if you need it.
But don’t leave it in a child’s backpack.
