LIVE ELECTION RESULTS: Alaska, Wyoming

August 16, 2022 by RedState Staff Leave a Comment

Another Tuesday, another set of primaries. This week, it’s primaries in Wyoming and Alaska (which features a special election, as well). Here’s what to keep an eye on per DDHQ:

Alaska

We get double the fun in Alaska as there’s a special election to fill the remainder of the term for Republican Don Young, who died in March. Alaska has Ranked Choice Voting, so the initial contest (held in June) narrowed the list down to four, including former governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, Nick Begich III (whose father held the seat before Don Young), Al Gross (who ran for U.S. Senate in 2020), and Democrat Mary Peltola. Gross has since withdrawn from the race. Depending on how close it is, the final outcome may not be known until all ballots are in (15 days from today).

Palin, Begich, and Peltola are simultaneously competing in the primary for that same seat, along with 19 others. The top four from that contest will then face off again in November for the next term.

In the GOP Senate race, it’s Trump-endorsed Kelly Tshibaka versus incumbent Senator Lisa Murkowski, who, of course, voted to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial. Again, with this being a Ranked Choice/top four scenario, both candidates could very well advance to the November showdown.

In the Governor’s race, Republican incumbent Mike Dunleavy faces several challengers. Per Alaska Public Media:

When Mike Dunleavy ran for governor four years ago, he was the conservative candidate, running far to the right of the incumbent. Now, as he vies for re-election, Dunleavy has got two well-funded candidates running to the right of him: Wasilla Rep. Christopher Kurka and Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Charlie Pierce.

Next week’s primary election is going to pare the list of 10 gubernatorial candidates to four, and it’s unlikely that Kurka and Pierce can both survive. The challengers are trying to distinguish themselves from each other, and from Dunleavy primarily on performance and commitment.

Wyoming

Overview: Polls close at 7:00 pm MST. Winners are first-past-the-post.

Of course, when it comes to Wyoming, all eyes are on the at-large Republican primary between Liz Cheney and Harriet Hageman. Polls show a distinct advantage to Hageman and likely for good reason. But some in the know caution not to take anything for granted. This is one we should have an answer to Tuesday night.

Republican incumbent Governor Mark Gordon is also seeking re-election.

LIVE ELECTION RESULTS: Connecticut, Minnesota, Vermont, Wisconsin

August 9, 2022 by RedState Staff Leave a Comment

Another Tuesday, another set of primaries. This week, it’s primaries in Connecticut, Minnesota (along with a special election), Vermont, and Wisconsin. Here’s what to keep an eye on per DDHQ:

Connecticut

Overview: Polls close at 8:00 pm Eastern. There are five Congressional districts. Winner is first-past-the-post.

Key races:

The Republican Senate primary features Themis Klarides, Leora Levy, and Peter Lumaj. In the Fourth District House primary, Michael Goldstein faces off against Jayme Stevenson.

Minnesota

Overview: Polls close at 7:00 pm Central. There are eight Congressional districts. Winner is first-past-the-post.

Key races:

For the Governor’s race, Democrat incumbent Tim Walz faces a challenge from Ole Savior (great name!). Bob Carney, Scott Jensen, and Joyce Lacey face off on the GOP side.

Regarding the House, per NBC news:

Voters in Minnesota’s 1st District will head to the polls Tuesday to elect a new member of Congress to replace the late GOP Rep. Jim Hagedorn.

Former state Rep. Brad Finstad is competing against Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party candidate Jeff Ettinger, a former CEO of Hormel Foods, to serve out the rest of Hagedorn’s term. Hagedorn died in February after battling cancer.

Republicans are expected to have an advantage in the district. Trump won the district 10 points in 2020, per the Cook Political Report, which rates the special election Likely Republican.

So, the winner of that race will immediately take office. But now, here’s the twist:

Both Finstad and Ettinger are also competing in Tuesday’s primaries for a full term representing the newly drawn 1st District. Finstad is facing a last-ditch challenge on the right from state Rep. Jeremy Munson, who lost the special election primary by a few hundred votes.

Additionally, in the Fifth District, incumbent Democrat and Squad Member Ilhan Omar is being challenged. Per the Fox9:

[T]his weekend is one of Hamline University political science professor David Schultz’s favorite times of the year, because so much is on the line for candidates across the state.

…

Of all the races, his focus is on the Fifth Congressional District primary between Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and challenger Don Samuels.

“This is probably attracting not just local but national attention,” Professor Schultz said. “If I’m looking for any sleeper, any kind of a sleeper race, maybe it’s Samuels upsetting Omar, although it’s a longshot.”

Vermont

Overview: Polls close at 7:00 pm Eastern. There is one Congressional district. Winner is first-past-the-post.

Key races:

Republican incumbent Phil Scott faces a challenge from Stephen Bellows and Peter Duval in the gubernatorial race. On the Dem side, Brenda Siegal is running unopposed.

For the U.S. Senate, it’s Gerald Malloy, Myers Mermel, and Christina Nolan facing off for the Republicans, while Peter Welch, Isaac Evans-Frantz, and Niki Thran contend for the Democrat nomination.

For Vermont’s lone Congressional district, it’s Anya Tynio, Liam Madden, and Ericka Redic on the GOP side, and Becca Balint, Sianay Clifford, Molly Gray, and Louis Meyers for the Democrats.

Both the Senate seat and the House seat are open seats, so Vermont will be sending an all-new delegation to D.C.

Wisconsin

Overview: Polls close at 8:00 pm Central. There are eight Congressional districts. Winner is first-past-the-post.

Key Races:

For the Governor’s race, it’s former Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch facing off against business Tim Michels, of Michels Infrastructure Corporation. Michels received Donald Trump’s endorsement, while Kleefisch, who served with former Governor Scott Walker, has the endorsement of Walker, Nikki Haley, Mike Pence, and Ted Cruz.

In the Senate, Republican incumbent Ron Johnson is facing a challenge from David Schroeder, while eight contenders face off for the Democrats.

GOP Senators Press the Brakes, Cautioning Voters That a Senate Majority Is Not Guaranteed

August 9, 2022 by Levon Satamian Leave a Comment

Republican senators are sounding the alarm that their party could very well be in the minority following the midterm elections.

The messaging here could mean two things — either they are saying this to encourage the GOP base to go out in droves and vote for GOP candidates — or they are already throwing in the towel and have given up due to some discouraging polls.

The polls in question show Arizona Senate candidate Blake Masters and Ohio Senate candidate J.D. Vance losing their Senate races. As we all know, polls don’t tell the whole story, and most times, polls are incorrect.

This is the most recent poll for the Ohio Senate race, and it is encouraging for Vance, considering it was an Impact Research/Democratic internal poll.

POLL: Impact Research/@TimRyan (D) Internal Poll

2022 #OHSen General Election
(D) Tim Ryan 48% (+3)
(R) J.D. Vance 45%

800 LV | 7/21-7/28https://t.co/4MOi53EmIl

— PPUSA (@PollProjectUSA) August 6, 2022

As for the Arizona Senate race, this is the latest poll.

On Message (R) poll of ARIZONA:

AZ-SEN
Mark Kelly (D-inc) 49% (+5)
Blake Masters (R) 44%

AZ-GEN BALLOT
Republicans 45% (+2)
Democrats 43%

— InteractivePolls (@IAPolls2022) August 3, 2022

Both races are winnable, but if the GOP is going to give up already and go in with the mindset of a win will be if the Senate remains 50-50, then that’s what the reality of it will be. But if they are trying to rile up the GOP base to go out in droves and vote, it could be a clever tactic.

Democrat John Fetterman 47%

Republican Dr. Oz 30%

– poll by Center Street

— PoliticsVideoChannel (@politvidchannel) August 9, 2022

The polls for the Pennsylvania Senate race have not favored Mehmet Oz, as the most recent poll showed Fetterman with a 17-point advantage, but if independents turn out due to the Biden administration’s failed policies, even Oz will have a chance to win. It is all about turnout.

Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) told CBS’ “Face the Nation” it’s “going to be a hard year.”

“We have 21 Republicans up, only 14 Democrats … The Democrats are outraising us, but we have good candidates. And I believe Joe Biden is going to be our key here.”

Last week, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) also tried to temper expectations, telling Fox News:

“I think it’s going to be very tight. We have a 50-50 nation. And I think when this Senate race smoke clears, we’re likely to have a very, very close Senate still, with us up slightly or the Democrats up slightly.”

Republican strategist Doug Heye said:

“There’s been a lot of curtain-measuring on the House sid,e and if Republicans take back the House but it’s by a small margin and they manage to hold onto the Senate even if it’s by one vote, that could cast how we view the election … We’ve seen the expectations game played a lot in Washington, and I think Scott is mindful of that, and depending on where expectations get set you could have a good night that’s defined as a bad night.”

November 8 is fast approaching, and the GOP must do everything possible to convince people to vote red. As RedState’s Bonchie reported, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will hit the campaign trail this month – traveling to New Mexico, Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Ohio to help the GOP candidates cross the finish line. It’s going to take an all-hands-on-deck approach in all states, by voters who oppose Biden’s policies for the Republicans to win decisively in the House and win the majority in the Senate.
