DOJ Conducts 'Pre-Dawn Raid' at Home of Former Trump DOJ Official

June 23, 2022 by Becca Lower Leave a Comment

Earlier on Thursday, my colleague Bonchie shared the story on signs the Biden administration is weaponizing federal law enforcement officials, serving search warrants Wednesday on two senior members of the Nevada Republican Party, including its chairman Michael McDonald.

As he wrote:

The weaponization of the FBI continues after what some would describe as Joe Biden’s personal police force seized the phone of a Nevada GOP leader on Wednesday. That report comes via 8 News Now, a local station in the state.

Per their sources, the FBI served a search warrant on Michael McDonald, the Republican chairman in Nevada. They seized his phone in relation to an “investigation” into the so-called “fake electors” scheme propagated after the 2020 election.

The TV station added in its reporting that

…[a] second search warrant was issued for state party secretary James DeGraffenreid, who also signed the document, but FBI agents could not locate him Wednesday, sources told Knapp.

It appears that wasn’t the end of the DOJ’s investigative work on Wednesday against Republicans.

ABC News:

Federal agents searched the Virginia home of former Trump Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark on Wednesday morning, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the activity.

It was unclear which federal agencies conducted the search, but one neighbor who witnessed the law enforcement activity said they saw officials entering and exiting the Lorton, Virginia, home after arriving there early Wednesday.

…

A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C., said they “can confirm there was law enforcement activity in that area yesterday,” but declined to comment on specific individuals or the nature of that activity.

And what was the alleged reason this may have happened? Here’s what was on the “docket” for the House January 6 Committee Thursday:

On Thursday, the House panel investigating the Jan. 6 attack was expected to hear testimony from multiple former Justice Department officials with knowledge of Clark’s proposal of a plan to pressure states to invalidate Biden’s electoral victories after the 2020 election.

ABC News reached out to the attorney for Clark, but instead (rightly) got an earful from Russ Vought, via a statement:

But Russ Vought, a former Trump White House official and the president of the Center for Renewing America, where Clark is now a senior fellow, said in a statement that “more than a dozen DOJ law enforcement officials searched Jeff Clark’s house in a pre-dawn raid, put him in the streets in his pajamas, and took his electronic devices.”

Vought’s statement continued:”The new era of criminalizing politics is worsening in the U.S. This is not America, folks. The weaponization of government must end. Let me be very clear. We stand by Jeff and so must all patriots in this country.”

Yellen Insists US Is Not Crashing Headlong Into a Recession, Experts and Reality Disagree

June 19, 2022 by Becca Lower Leave a Comment

On Sunday’s “This Week” program, Biden administration Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen continued to try to put a positive spin on the president’s poor economic track record. But the most stunning piece of twirling was this: she refuses to say the U.S. is falling headlong into a recession.

Treasury Sec. Janet Yellen tells @GStephanopoulos that a recession isn’t “inevitable,” but says inflation is “unacceptably high.”

“I expect the economy to slow.” https://t.co/xMZVnzRLgN pic.twitter.com/Xx9UpkmWz4

— This Week (@ThisWeekABC) June 19, 2022

It isn’t hard to find economic experts who say that’s just plain wrong–that the reality of recession is staring everyone right in the face. Here’s former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers telling Chuck Todd exactly that, over on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” Sunday:

WATCH: @chucktodd: “Can inflation at this point be tamed without triggering a recession?”@LHSummers: “I don’t think there are historical precedents for inflation at the rate we now have it coming down to the target the Fed has set of 2% without a recession.” pic.twitter.com/spZJCFs5Up

— Meet the Press (@MeetThePress) June 19, 2022

The Hill:

“Look, nothing is certain and all economic forecasts have uncertainty. My best guess is that a recession is ahead,” Summers told moderator Chuck Todd during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet The Press.” “I base that on the fact that we haven’t had a situation like the present with inflation above 4 percent and unemployment beyond 4 percent without a recession following within a year or two.”

As my colleague Streiff shared late last week, the administration was saved from its own folly, it appears, on a shelved scheme to send out gas rebate card to millions of Americans’ mailboxes.

That wrongheadedness hasn’t abated, as Yellen’s remarks on Sunday make clear. She reveals one thing the administration is signalling it wants to do to “help” inflation–and it could be a potential, national security disaster. She floats the notion that Biden will end the Trump administration’s tariffs against China.

Pres. Biden is reviewing tariff policy toward China because some tariffs from Trump administration serve “no strategic purpose and raise costs to consumers,” Treasury Sec. Janet Yellen tells @GStephanopoulos. https://t.co/ApFBeNbliM pic.twitter.com/arNTW4rcaD

— This Week (@ThisWeekABC) June 19, 2022

I call it “wrongheaded,” but that doesn’t begin to describe how bad this shortsighted move would be. You likely aren’t surprised, though. Now, will it ease the inflation pinch on Americans? Possibly. And that’s all that’s being weighed here by the progressives running this White House.

The real damage Americans see happening to our once-vibrant economy is just as brutal for the left as the poll numbers we’ve reported about the midterms. The numbers just don’t lie. Democrats are looking down the barrel of a massive bloodletting of their base support, and dismal prospects come 2024. At this point, they might reckon they have nothing to lose here.

Latest Poll Is a Mixed Bag for the January 6th Committee and Donald Trump

June 19, 2022 by Bonchie Leave a Comment

The January 6th committee is not going well. In the midst of immense hype and total media subservience, including having the first hearing simulcast in primetime across every major news network (except Fox News), things have fallen flat since the opening statement.

We’ve seen hearings postponed, the total number of hearings reduced, and most importantly, zero evidence of a vast, Trump-led conspiracy to attack the Capitol and execute a “coup” has been presented. To the extent that the committee has had any impact, it’s been to confirm the priors of too-online, beltway-dwelling liberals.

Most people simply aren’t paying attention, something confirmed by the latest ABC News/Ipsos poll. Though, as we’ll get to, the survey includes some less than stellar news for Donald Trump as well.

NEW: 34% of Americans are following the Jan. 6 hearings very or somewhat closely, with 43% of Democrats and 22% of Republicans saying so, per a new @ABC News/Ipsos poll. https://t.co/Y4sQSMcIYB

— This Week (@ThisWeekABC) June 19, 2022

With only 34 percent of Americans closely following the hearings, it’s just not the big, game-changing production Democrats wanted it to be. And why would they be following it closely? Everything being presented was already known, and while members like Liz Cheney keep promising a final blow against the former president, it keeps not coming.

If the committee had such evidence of criminal activity, don’t you think they would have led with that during their primetime presentation? That they didn’t is indicative of how weak their case is. The January 6th committee exists as a political tool, meant to disqualify Trump from running in 2024. It was not constituted to hold a legitimate investigation, letting the chips fall where they may.

Still, 58 percent of Americans believe Trump should be criminally charged. That number requires some context, though. Before the hearings, in the same poll taken back in January, 54 percent said the same thing. In other words, the committee has failed to change any minds outside the margin of error. If that’s not a failure, I don’t know what is.

I’d also posit that some not-insignificant portion of the “charge Trump” crowd really just want him off the national stage and see this as an easy way to reach that end. After all, what crime is he supposed to be charged with? He clearly didn’t incite the riot, having told the crowd to peacefully protest, and there’s been no proof of any conspiracy to breach the Capitol presented. Even if one thinks Trump’s behavior was immoral, that’s not a crime.

You have to remember, though, that most Americans are not politically active, and despite the problems with the 2020 election, they see the videos from January 6th and just want to move on. For them, part of that is Trump riding off into the sunset–instead of mounting another run at 78 years old. You don’t have to agree with that, but that’s the dynamic at play.
