MSU professor illustrates problem with gun control advocates

March 3, 2023 by Tom Knighton Leave a Comment

The state of Michigan was likely to adopt gun control either this year or next regardless of any other factor. The shooting at Michigan State University, however, simply provided a handy pretext for anti-gun voices to rally around.

A prime example is one professor who issued his own call for gun control recently.

Marco Díaz-Muñoz, an assistant professor at Michigan State University whose classroom was attacked by a gunman, encouraged Michigan lawmakers Thursday to do the “right thing” and the “humane thing” by enacting new gun control measures.

Díaz-Muñoz, 64, was teaching a class in Berkey Hall about Cuban cultural identity on Feb. 13 when the gunman opened fire, killing two students. For the entirety of the evening, the mass shooting on the university campus in East Lansing left three students dead and wounded five others.

It was the darkest event of Díaz-Muñoz’s life, he told members of the Michigan Senate’s Civil Rights, Judiciary, and Public Safety Committee.

“Before the tragic events at MSU, I was already a supporter of sensible gun control laws,” Díaz-Muñoz said. “However, my experience that night has strongly solidified my belief that gun control laws are an absolute necessity to stop the senseless killings that occur on a daily basis in this country.”

First, I have to ask, how many people think a college professor at a major university teaching “cultural identity” didn’t support gun control before the shooting happened? Show of hands.

Yeah, kind of what I thought.

Of course, he kind of admits that when he says it “solidified” his belief, but anyway, that’s not what I want to talk about anyway.

See, Díaz-Muñoz’s comments are predicated on something that gun control advocates have seemingly been basing all their rhetoric on for years.

It’s like they actually think we agree that gun control works.

There’s nothing in Díaz-Muñoz’s comments that suggests that he’s trying to convince anyone that regulation is the right course of action. Instead, it looks as if, in his mind, the matter is already settled.

Look, “everybody knows” is a terrible way to argue in favor of something. It’s a pretty good Leonard Cohen song, but a terrible way to argue.

Now, Díaz-Muñoz is just one example, but he’s far from the first.

Anti-gunners love to stomp and scream that we need to pass gun control, and that failing to do so will result in “senseless killings” and such, but there’s no real argument there. There’s nothing to convince those of us who disagree to change our minds.

Unless, of course, they actually think we believe gun control works and are refusing to embrace it because of other reasons.

And even if I thought gun control worked, I’d likely still oppose it because our rights cannot be set aside so easily.

Yet I don’t think it works. Quite the contrary, actually, I’ve seen ample evidence to believe it doesn’t. But the arguments never seem to address this. For many of them, it’s a foregone conclusion, a universal truth, that gun control stops mass shootings.

Never you mind about the two in California just days apart. Don’t talk about how it failed to stop either them or the Buffalo killer, as just a couple of examples. No, those are irrelevant and you shouldn’t fret about those cases.

Instead, you should just…what? Take their word? Take the word of seriously flawed and biased studies?

Well, we don’t. We’re unconvinced, and when Díaz-Muñoz simply demand that we capitulate and give up our rights for their peace of mind, well, we’re even less convinced.

But this is what the gun control side’s arguments typically are. They’re people stomping and screaming like spoiled children because we won’t do what they tell us to, and about the only reason I can find for them to do such is because they think their position is so self-evident that they don’t need to defend it.

They’re quite wrong.

Michigan State students call for gun control action

February 21, 2023 by Tom Knighton Leave a Comment

The shooting at Michigan State has re-sparked the debate over gun control. It was kind of dying, really, despite the constant calls for assault weapon bans following shootings that didn’t involve assault weapons.

Now, it’s back.

The entire state is abuzz with talk of passing significant gun control this session and is likely to see more next year.

It seems many on the university campus support this.

When it comes to the topic of gun control and reforming Michigan’s gun laws, doing nothing isn’t cutting it anymore.

That was the message gun violence survivors – including those who survived mass shootings at Oxford High School, Michigan State University and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida – emphasized at a press conference Monday, Feb. 20, in Lansing.

The group gathered to urge lawmakers to take swift action on nearly a dozen bills recently introduced in the Senate that seek to implement universal background checks for all firearm owners, create red flag laws and encourage the safe storage of guns in Michigan.

“I’m here because I’m angry,” said Madeline Johnson, a student at Oxford High School when a shooting there in 2021 left four of her classmates dead. “I’m angry … that four children died at my high school, including my best friend, and that their lives were not worth enough to you to enact change.”

Johnson was one of a handful of students to speak Monday, expressing anger, heartbreak and outrage over a lack of movement on any sort of gun reform in Michigan despite having two mass shootings in two years at academic institutions.

“No amount of thoughts or prayers, no rhetorical gymnastics will make sense of what happened last week,” said Victor Rodriguez-Pereira, a faculty member of romance and classical studies at MSU. “Comprehensive gun legislation and wide accessibility to mental health resources are the only step forward to avoid something like this happening to anyone else.”

Of course, it’s unsurprising that these folks would get the spotlight.

However, not everyone agrees with these activists. In fact, not everyone at Michigan State agrees with them. There are pro-gun students and possibly even faculty there on the campus.

Where are their voices? Why aren’t they sought out when the media starts talking about the opinions of those who survived such violence?

Not every survivor turns to gun control. Many make have to do a bit of soul-searching, but some come out on the other end recognizing that gun control isn’t the answer. They oppose all of these measures being supported by this bunch.

Why don’t we hear from them?

Oh, some are afraid to speak up because they don’t want to be ostracized on their campuses, but many others would love to speak out.

Frankly, there’s no clearer evidence of media bias than how they cover the student body after a school shooting. There’s not one word about the pro-gun students, just those crusading for gun control.

I’m going to point this out at every opportunity because the truth is that this is total BS and we all know it.

Michigan AG sending mixed signals on guns

February 16, 2023 by Tom Knighton Leave a Comment

I get it. The state of Michigan is kind of worked up after what happened at Michigan State. They would be.

However, I’ve always felt it was important that politicians, even in the aftermath of a horrible tragedy, make some kind of sense.

Yet it seems that’s not a big thing for some elected officials up that way. I think it’s best summed up with Breitbart’s headline, “Michigan A.G.: We Need Gun Control and Can’t Solve Shootings by Bringing Strict Charges Against Gun Criminals Because There Are So Many.”

So there you have it, the anti-gun, pro-sentencing reform Democrat in a nutshell.

And really, the headline is only part of it.

[Michigan Attorney General Dana] Nessel responded, “No, I think he’s absolutely false. And here’s why I say that: Carrying a concealed weapon is the crime that this individual, [name redacted], was originally charged with. In Michigan, that’s technically a five-year felony. But our guidelines in Michigan really don’t even allow someone to spend much time at all in jail unless they have many previous offenses. And, as far as I know, this was a first-time weapons-related offense for this individual. That is such a common crime here that, if we were to lock up everyone who illegally carried a gun, we’d have to build more prisons. So, to me, it’s not a matter of incarcerating our way through this problem, it’s a matter of making guns less accessible and available to people.”

Yet this is another state Democrat calling for gun control in the wake of Michigan State.

I can’t help but wonder just how she thinks new gun laws would actually work if violating them won’t lead to prosecution. Or is she trying to say that only some violations should be prosecuted, but not the kind that one might associate more closely with criminal activity?

After all, Michigan has permitting. The killer had initially applied for a permit. That application was pending when he was arrested for carrying illegally.

Those who carry without permits in states that require them are violating the law. Criminals are therefore more likely to carry without a permit than otherwise law-abiding citizens.

It’s not wrong to wonder why these crimes aren’t being prosecuted while lawmakers continue to scream to high heavens about how they need still more gun control.

It’s just insane.

Michigan is upset and mourning, but that’s no excuse to call for more gun control while simultaneously defending the fact that existing gun control laws aren’t being enforced. You’re going to find new regulations a much harder sell with many people in such circumstances.

Sure, the typical anti-gunner doesn’t care, but a lot of people who are more middle-of-the-road on such issues might not be thrilled with it. While the Michigan officials–all Democrats–may think those folks won’t care one way or another, they will.

Especially if they’re gun owners or prospective gun buyers who will watch themselves have to deal with the fallout while criminals carrying illegally continue to do so without fear of being prosecuted for it.

Swalwell beclowns himself in wake of Michigan State

February 16, 2023 by Tom Knighton Leave a Comment

Rep. Eric “Nuke ’em All” Swalwell is at it again.

No, he’s not sleeping with a Chinese spy. At least, not that we’re aware of, anyway. What he’s doing again is his typical anti-gun rhetoric without any regard for, you know, facts.

It’s very simple: you’re either here for the kids or the killers. Time and again, Republicans have chosen their side.

— Eric Swalwell (@ericswalwell) February 15, 2023

Now, obviously, I have issues with this kind of thing. I have reasons to be pissed about this kind of rhetoric. Our own Ryan Petty has even more reason to be angry at this nonsense.

See, this frothing rage is predicated on the idea that Republicans actually think gun control works. Why else would it be evil to oppose it? It can’t be because GOP members of Congress believe that the right to keep and bear arms is as absolute as they come or anything. It can’t be that they just don’t think gun control would make a difference.

And, as Zachary Faria writes over at the Washington Examiner, they’ve got reason to believe it wouldn’t.

So let’s extend a challenge to Eric Swalwell. Set aside how obnoxious it is to suggest that Republicans deliberately “side” with those who kill children. Could he name just one policy that would have prevented this shooting? Surely he must be able to think of one for him to fire off such inflammatory remarks, right?

The answer is that he could not name one such policy. The shooter at Michigan State almost certainly used a handgun, as evidenced by the photos of him released by police. That means that a ban on “assault weapons” or AR-15s would have done nothing. Arbitrary limits on magazine capacity are irrelevant, as is the possibility that a universal background check law would have done anything since the shooter was able to legally purchase firearms by all indications.

Michigan State University is also a gun-free zone, though I suspect Democrats won’t really want to talk about that.

The shooter would be able to legally buy a gun because he wasn’t a convicted felon, which he should have been. He was able to plead down from a felony to a misdemeanor thanks to then-Ingham County District Attorney Carol Siemon. Had he been convicted of a felony, he could still be in prison right now and would be unable to legally purchase a firearm when he got out. But Siemon believes in letting criminals off the hook because of “dramatic racial inequity,” so she let him off with a slap on the wrist.

In other words, as with so many other mass shootings, the gun laws already in place didn’t do what they were supposed to do. Why it’s almost like gun control doesn’t work at all.

Swalwell can make all the wild accusations he wants, but while he can claim this gun control law or that gun control law would have changed things, the reality is that he can’t really show one that would have.

Yet we can show plenty that were already on the books that didn’t.

Frankly, though, I have to admit that I’m impressed with Swalwell. I didn’t think I could loathe him any more than I already did, yet here we are.

The View hosts turn Michigan State discussion on its head

February 16, 2023 by Tom Knighton Leave a Comment

The View may well be some of the most mind-numbing television on these days. Frankly, I’m pretty sure it has played a role in many cutting cable and just streaming television instead of having to face the possibility of flipping through and seeing this bunch.

The program typically involves some degree of what passes for discussion, so it’s not surprising that the ladies of The View would talk about the Michigan State shooting.

Yet how quickly did they lose the plot.

The hosts of The View got into tense back and forth over the topic of gun control following the mass shooting at Michigan State University this week where three people were killed.

The hosts were in near-universal acceptance there need to be some much stricter gun restrictions on the books, and Alyssa Farah Griffin offered slight pushback, igniting the table.

“Legal gun ownership is fundamental in this country,” she said after saying she approves of expanded red flag laws, wait periods, and background checks.

Griffin said “sane” and “serious” Republicans want further restrictions and to target illegal guns, which morphed into a debate on the AR-15, which Sunny Hostin referred to as an “assault rifle” and a “weapon of mass destruction.” Hostin asked Griffin if she approved of citizens being legally able to own AR-15s, to which Griffin again only offered slight pushback.

“An AR-15, I don’t see any personal reason anyone would need to own. There’s a lot of sportsmen and collectors who do choose to have them,” Griffin said.

And from there it basically became a debate about so-called assault weapons.

Basically, they lost the plot.

See, right now, we’re still trying to learn about just what happened. There’s still a lot of information we don’t have, such as why the killer’s father said he had mental health issues but no efforts were made to try and get him help he needed. Or, conversely, did people try and the guy just refused to do anything with it?

We don’t know.

What we do know, though, is that the AR-15 wasn’t involved. There was no AR-15 used in this shooting, so why bring it up?

The answer is likely because the women of The View don’t actually understand guns to any degree so they lump them all together. Plus, let’s also be real here, they’re not different than any other gun control supporter. They don’t care if an AR-15 was used, they’re going to use the shooting in Michigan as a pretext to push for literally everything they want.

What’s funny is how they don’t seem to get how poorly that typically works out for them.

Sure, following Uvalde, they got the bipartisan gun control bill passed, but even they recognize that was about as weak of a gun control bill as they could possibly imagine and it did stuff that, frankly, many Republicans were OK with in the first place.

It really didn’t change the landscape all that much.

But their continued pushes for assault weapon bans following shootings that involve pistols make it pretty clear that they don’t actually care about what happened, they’re just using the bodies of the slain as soapboxes.

It’s ghoulish, to say the least, and the women on The View seem to be the most ghoulish of the bunch.
