Michigan students plead for more gun control

March 16, 2023 by Tom Knighton Leave a Comment

What happened at Michigan State is a rare thing. It’s not rare just because, contrary to what you hear in the media, mass shootings don’t happen that often. It’s also rare because pretty much everyone can agree on something, that what transpired was awful.

However, let’s also be realistic. What happened there didn’t cause some kind of divine revelation for the students. They’re no more experts on things like guns, violent crime, or mass shootings than they were five minutes before the shooting took place.

It doesn’t matter, though, because the media and lawmakers are holding anti-gun Michigan students up and we’re all supposed to listen.

They’re young, angry, and scared.

A group of Michigan students spoke out Tuesday about the need for gun control following the mass shootings at Oxford High School and Michigan State University.

“Everyday we lose someone we love or someone close and it’s all because of gun violence,” said Taylor Jackson, a junior at Dearborn High School. “This has to stop.”

The news conference follows legislation introduced by Democrats in the state Senate just three days after the massacre at MSU on Feb. 13. The legislation would require background checks and safe gun storage, as well as enable courts to temporarily seize guns from people deemed a danger to themselves or others.

Julia Begley, a sophomore at Oxford High School, said the bills “are only the beginning” of what’s needed. But the legislation is a critical first step, she said.

“By passing these bills we will be able to ensure a future and a life for the youth of America,” Begley said.

Students questioned why it took a mass shooting to prompt an urgency in passing the legislation. Republicans shelved similar bills in the past. But now Democrats have control of the Legislature for the first time in nearly 40 years and are poised to pass the bills.

What’s missing from this report, though, is any counter by students in Michigan who disagree with this bunch.

We know they exist. They’ve already made their voices heard once since Michigan State. Where are they in this conversation?

The answer is obvious. They don’t conform to the narrative, so they’re not given a microphone to show that support for this nonsense is far from universal from this particular demographic.

All around the nation, we have numerous students who recognize that gun control doesn’t stop mass shootings. It didn’t in Monterey Park or Half Moon Bay. It didn’t in Hamburg, Germany–and that’s just this year alone!

Gun control, however, means that law-abiding citizens in Michigan who might be willing to protect students are legally forbidden from doing so. That’s about all that’s accomplished with gun control.

Let’s remember that the Michigan State killer wasn’t a convicted felon. There’s little reason to believe that his gun would have been taken from him by a red flag order–especially since he denied even having it. There’s no reason to think that any gun control would have stopped that shooting or any other.

As for the students, they’re not experts on guns, gun violence, the Second Amendment, violent crime, mass shootings, or anything else. At best, they’re just a group of citizens who want something from the government.

Please, folks, stop acting like there’s some reason we should take their concerns more seriously than our own.

GOA files lawsuit challening Michigan State gun ban

March 15, 2023 by Tom Knighton Leave a Comment

Michigan State is, understandably, a little shaky right now.

It wasn’t that long ago that a gunman set foot on its campus and killed several people. It was a deliberate and premeditated attack and it left a lot of people freaking out.

Yet their response was to ban guns on campus. That’s not a particularly useful move considering it wouldn’t have stopped the killer from taking those lives, but such a ban might prevent a law-abiding citizen from preventing another such atrocity from taking place.

Now, Michigan State is going to have to go to court over its gun ban. From a press release by Gun Owners of America:

This past Thursday, Gun Owners of America (GOA) and the Gun Owners Foundation (GOF) filed an amicus brief in support of Joshua Wade in his challenge to the ban on firearms on campus at the University of Michigan. The case is currently under the consideration of the state’s supreme court.

Mr. Wade, who holds a state issued concealed carry permit, had previously applied for an exemption to the current ban with the University’s Director of Public Safety, which was denied. In turn, Mr. Wade challenged the University policy under the State of Michigan’s preemption statute.

Erich Pratt, GOA’s Senior Vice President, issued the following statement:

“GOA has been on the front lines fighting to restore Second Amendment rights to college students across the country. Earlier this month we helped to get campus carry passed in West Virginia, and we hope that those watching this case in Michigan will recognize, especially in light of recent events, that students deserve the ability to defend themselves on-campus.”

Sam Paredes, on behalf of the board for GOF, added:

“GOF is excited to lend our support to Mr. Wade in this case, as the state’s preemption law does not permit public universities to enact these unconstitutional policies. As we have been saying since the Bruen decision, fall in line, or we will make you.”

GOA spokesmen are available for interviews.  Gun Owners of America is a nonprofit grassroots lobbying organization dedicated to protecting the right to keep and bear arms without compromise. GOA represents over two million members and activists. For more information, visit GOA’s Press Center.

The fact that Michigan has preemption may be changed at some point in the not-too-distant future, what with the current makeup and predispositions of the legislature, but it’s on the books now and that’s what matters.

As a result, it seems unlikely that Michigan State University has the authority to unilaterally ban guns on campus.

However, we’ve seen other instances of similar challenges that were unsuccessful despite preemption being on the books. It really matters what other laws exist and whether colleges are somehow exempt from such statutes.

Obviously, I’m not an expert on Michigan law, so I can’t say for certain.

What I can do, though, is to note that no matter how many bans are put in place, a mass shooter won’t be stopped with rules on a piece of paper. After all, guns were prohibited in Parkland, Uvalde, Virginia Tech, the University of Virginia, and countless other schools that saw such violence.

Rules don’t stop killers.

Good guys with guns, however, can and do.

Michigan legislators’ push for gun control has little to do with shooting at Michigan State University

February 20, 2023 by Tom Knighton Leave a Comment

We all know there was a mass shooting at Michigan State University.

We also all know that now there’s a push in the state for gun control. Lawmakers there have been beating the drum for it before the brass had even cooled.

In the media, this is being framed as the shooting giving lawmakers there an opportunity they’ve lacked for some time.

Three days after Michigan State University was terrorized by a mass shooting on campus, Democratic lawmakers in the state filed a host of bills targeting gun safety – legislation they are hopeful can become law since the party last month took control of the legislature and governor’s office for the first time in four decades.

State lawmakers filed an 11-bill package Thursday, which includes several policies experts say are proven to reduce gun violence. Michigan Democrats have tried and failed to enact stronger gun regulations in recent years under Republican-controlled legislative bodies. Their efforts intensified after the November 2021 mass shooting at Oxford High School just outiside Detroit, but none of the measures passed.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, promised legislative changes just two days after authorities say Anthony Dwayne McRae, 43, opened fire on MSU’s campus Monday night, killing three students and critically wounding five others.

“The time for only thoughts and prayers is over,” Whitmer said in a tweet. “We are in a unique position to take action and save lives. And that’s exactly what we are going to do in the weeks ahead.”

Except, Whitmer had previously made it clear she wanted to pass gun control. Democrats taking control of both chambers of the state legislature made it clear they intended to pass gun control. This was always in the cards.

Further, absolutely none of those 11 items would have done a blasted thing to prevent the shooter from killing those kids. None of the laws in question would have done a thing to stop that shooting from happening.

What we’re seeing isn’t lawmakers responding to a horrific event in hopes of keeping it from happening again. What we’re seeing are anti-Second Amendment legislators using the deaths of three people as a pretext to pass laws they wanted to pass all along.

In fact, they intended to pass them all along.

They were probably going to pass them all along.

What they’re doing here, though, is trying to frame any opposition as somehow excusing these murders. They’re trying to tie Michigan State to their gun control push despite no evidence that any of these measures would have prevented the shooting from happening.

Unfortunately, the media isn’t interested in evaluating what happened and holding these lawmakers accountable, either. Instead, they accept the new narrative that Michigan State is what’s changed everything, all so they can use that to try and pressure lawmakers elsewhere to do just that.

But don’t buy it. Michigan was going to do this all along. They never intended to respect anyone’s gun rights.

They’re just lying to everyone and pretending what they wanted all along is really a response to a horrific event. When these laws fail to stop the next mass shooting, though, they won’t acknowledge this or even accept the laws failed. They’ll just call for more laws they wanted all along.

I just wish they’d own up to it and admit they don’t respect people’s gun rights and will take them away every chance they get.
