An actress in the newest series in the “Star Wars” franchise says “Andor” is a “scurrilous” take on the “Trumpian world,” and says it reflects how people are losing their rights in the real world.
Fiona Shaw made the comments in an interview with Empire magazine.
The Disney+ streaming series portrays a desperate rebellion arising against the despotic Empire and is created by Tony Gilroy, who is known for writing the original “Bourne” trilogy and the movie “Michael Clayton.” Shaw says Gilroy has written the show as a commentary on former President Donald Trump.
“Tony has written a great, scurrilous [take] on the Trumpian world,” said Shaw, who portrays a character named Maarva in the series.
“Our world is exploding in different places right now, people’s rights are disappearing, and Andor reflects that,” she added. “[In the show] the Empire is taking over, and it feels like the same thing is happening in reality, too.”
The series takes place in the “Star Wars” universe five years before the popular “Rogue One” movie, which was also co-written by Gilroy.
“I was impressed by Tony’s social-realist intentions,” Shaw said. “He’s created a whole new morality. It’s very deep and humane – there is grief, mourning, hope, fear. It’s not just primary colors here.”
The series is also described by actor Diego Luna as “insanely ambitious, dark and real.”
Gilroy has not commented on the politics of the show, but he has said in previous interviews that it will change the canon of the franchise universe, especially the assumptions the audience had about characters in the “Rogue One” movie.
“It’s upside down, or it’s sideways, or it’s the opposite of what you thought was true,” he explained cryptically.
“Or it’s way more interesting than you had ever thought,” he added. “Or that’s a lie and there’s a reason for it. I would say that there’s some surprises in store.”
The series is scheduled to debut on the Disney+ streaming service on September 21 and will run for 12 episodes.
