Review: Straight Shooting by Anthony I. Matarese Jr.

August 27, 2023 by John Petrolino Leave a Comment

Anthony Matarese Jr. is a world-class clays shooter. Hailing from Pennsville, New Jersey, where he and his family own and operate M and M Hunting & Sporting Clays, the multi-award winning champion put out a book on the art of shooting sporting clays last year. I had an opportunity to spend some time with Matarese’s book, “Straight Shooting,” and if you’re into improving your clays game, it just might be for you.

The book is a handsome 320-page case-wrapped hardcover, full color, text that’s 8 x 10” in size. The book has the look and feel of a scholastic textbook, but reads easily and is very conversational in the narrative. The book was brought to light with the help of Kerry Luft, “an award-winning editor and writer who has worked with Anthony I. Matarese Jr. for more than a decade. He is a certified shooting instructor and a master class competitor in sporting clays.” The foreword was written by “world champion” Cory Kruse.

When I first cracked the spine of “Straight Shooting,” I was not sure what to expect. The book is an absolute kitchen sink to the world of sporting clays. Matarese completely dissects the sport down to the molecular level, and given his grasp of the topic, one could figure he’s forgotten more about the sport than most have ever learned. Considering Matarese’s exceptional record as a competitor, his vantage point is paramount.

Anthony I. Matarese Jr. is the first American to win the World English Sporting Clays Championship and the first person to win the sport’s four biggest tournaments: the World English, the World FITASC, the National Championship, and the US Open. He is the youngest inductee to the National Sporting Clays Association’s Hall of Fame.

Matarese is also one of the world’s leading shooting coaches and instructors, and with his family runs M&M Hunting and Sporting Clays, one of the world’s premier shooting destinations.

Things that you’ll tackle while going through the pages of “Straight Shooting” include; equipment needed, the names of different target presentations, etiquette, strategy and planning a shot, different types of lead to use when swinging on a target, types of mounts, the many different sports that are out there, and much much more.

The book has several sections that are broken up into 50 easy-to-read and digest chapters. When needed, appropriate sidebars are presented within the text in the same manner one would expect to see in a magazine or textbook. The images are high quality and add a pictorial to concepts that are presented within. Sections of the book are as follows:

  • What you need
  • The basics
  • Basic target tactics
  • Using the eyes
  • Getting better
  • Advanced targets and tactics
  • To the top
  • Other stuff

Since the material is easy to take in, going back to review different chapters that you want to brush up on would not be onerous. Have a problem with a certain type of target while at the course? When you get back home, review the section or sections on that presentation.

Matarese takes a lot of his mentality as a champion and puts it into the work. When discussing being a winner, he wrote, “The people at the top of their game got there because they have a certain degree of aptitude, but more important, they got there because of their dedication and hard work.” That dedication and hard work are referenced when bringing up the concept that people should never give up:

“If you give 100 percent effort, you shouldn’t feel disappointed – you can’t do any more than that. But if you didn’t give it everything you could, then I have a big problem with that as a coach. You can’t very well ask for help if you’re not giving 100 percent every time.” – Anthony I. Matarese Jr. on competing

I enjoyed taking the time to read “Straight Shooting.” Is this book for everyone? Maybe not. The depth that the text goes into would serve the casual shooter, but I feel it would best suit someone looking to improve their game and or get into competing. I do feel like I may have picked up a few birds since reviewing the material in the book, so that’s a big win for me personally.

Pluses: Easy to read. Handsome design. Great images.

Minuses: The book is a little expensive clocking in at $89.95.

Matarese absolutely put together a tome of knowledge that I think will stand the test of time. I think that there would be potential for wider reach if the text was offered in paperback and or ebook via Kindle or Nook, but that’s just my opinion. I also think that there’s plenty of room for Matarese to springboard off this book and assemble a clays 101 digest version that shotgun instructors could provide their students, and or would be available for those who want to casually creep into the world of sporting clays. I could see first-time sporting clays shooters getting into a smaller more pocket-friendly version.

The bottom line is, would I buy this book? Yes and no. I’d buy this book for someone in my circle as a gift if they indicated an interest in clay sports. If I were personally seeking to up my game and get competitive, I would buy this book. Granted, I can afford to improve, but I just may have to take a training session from Matarese, and having this book under my belt would be a great frame of reference. In the world of clay shooting, Matarese dusted this one, and sure did deliver on bringing a powerful guide for everyone to tap into.

Product review: Irish Setter Elk Tracker XD boots

August 15, 2023 by John Petrolino Leave a Comment

When I had the opportunity to get a pair of Irish Setter Elk Tracker XD boots I was pretty excited. Then I thought to myself, “Where am I going to be tracking elk in suburban New Jersey?” While the question could be considered fair enough, and we’ll get back to that later on, what’s in a name?

Okay, the Elk Tracker XD boots were designed to withstand the needs of hunters that would be going after elk in some serious terrains. Elk have been pretty much completely extinct on the eastern seaboard, with the last known eastern elk joining the Tasmanian tiger in the late 1800’s. Rocky Mountain elk have been reintroduced into some areas of Pennsylvania, but outside of that, there aren’t many in the north-east. The presence of elk and performance of the Elk Tracker boots are not mutually exclusive, and my first impressions are pretty elevated.

I’ve never owned a pair of Irish Setter boots, however I have been using Red Wing boots, the parent company of Irish Setter, for close to two decades. The same quality and craftsmanship that goes into the style of Red Wing boots I’ve used in occupational settings since W. was in office, I feel went into these Irish Setters.

Irish Setter, as noted, is a subsidiary of Red Wing. Their boots are generally known for being hunting boots, although they do have some work-wear in their product line. The company utilizes hand-tanned leather and employs a number of different technologies to fulfill a wearer’s needs.

The Elk Tracker XD builds on the original Elk Tracker line of boots, with the XD’s being “extra durable.” They feature what’s called a “wrapround Armatec™ rubber rand,” to protect the wearer from sticks, rocks, sharp objects, etc., and “the Vibram® Bulls-Eye® Air Bob Aggressive sole features Megagrip compound for rugged performance and superior comfort,” will give a wearer stability when traversing across rocky and slippery terrain.

The Irish Setter Field Camo Desert Leather is sharp looking. The pattern will be complementary to autumn terrain and maintains a rustic patina that you can almost smell with your eyes. In addition to being marketed as durable, they are noted to be flexible, while also maintaining needed rigidity for support.

As soon as I had a chance when my Elk Tracker XD 3981’s came in, I saw to “breaking them in.” I paraded around my house with the boots on, wearing dark cargo shorts, looking a bit like the kid from “Up.” The wilderness must be explored! The thing that flummoxed me when wearing the boots for the first day indoors, and then taking them out, was they actually did not really need any breaking in at all. They were comfortable as soon as I put my feet into them, and the locking hook row for the laces allowed me to make the uppers as tight or loose as I wanted. I erred on the side of snugger than looser.

I did not get to torture test my Elk Tracker XD’s quite as long as I would have liked to, but I did get them out into the “bush.” How far into the bush? I wore the boots on a long weekend camping trip over the Fourth of July for five days, a couple trips to the shooting range, wore them on a road trip to and while shooting a round of sporting clays, and I even ran them through the paces on a three story metal ropes course on a New Jersey boardwalk. Was I marching across ultra rocky terrain for days on end? No. But I did wear the hell outta these boots through most of July, while putting them through the paces and I have no complaints.

What’s my assessment? Call them Elk Trackers, call them deer destroyers, call the boots whatever you want…the fact is they’re comfortable and I did not bust my ass when walking on slippery rocks. The soles have aggressive lugs on them and helped keep me from slipping or falling while wearing them.

I felt stable and my feet were dry the entire time I wore the boots, which was nice considering it was raining the entire time I was camping. While the model I opted for has 200g insulation, my feet did not swelter in agony when the rest of my body was trying to figure out what I was doing shooting sporting clays in the July Virginia hotness. The boots breathed.

For me, these are going to be a great substitute for late fall or winter day hikes, camping trips, and shooting adventures. Am I going to be hunting elk in these boots? No. Not unless somebody calls me and says, “John we’re taking you on an elk hunting trip!” But I can see them being pivotal to those who would. Uninsulated models would be great for three seasons for sure.

There are certain bits of kismet that the universe delivers, and lacing up my Irish Setter Elk Tracker XD boots for that Pennsylvania camping trip I mentioned must have sent out a message. Several activities that I was to be engaging in while on that weekend getaway fell into the category of “she booked a ‘surprise.’” That is, a pile of things were planned and I was not in on what they all were. That’s how we roll. Keeps life spicy.

Sitting in a “safari” truck at Lake Tobias Wildlife Park, I had a cup of baby carrots in hand to feed the wildlife. The truck had already taken us through to see all kinds of cool exotic and indigenous to the U.S. critters, from fallow deer to American bison. Rolling up a hill in the middle of a field we stopped for a herd of elk. I’m not going to say it was my Elk Tracker boots, but I did feed a few in-velvet elk that day while having the footwear donned. I’m also not going to say it wasn’t the boots. These are the mysteries that life gives us.

Pluses: High quality and well-constructed boots. Comfort is subjective, but for these ten-and-a-half, wide, high-arched feet, the boots felt great from the get-go. There is a warranty. Price point consistent with comparable products; starting at $249.00 and going up to $259.00.

Minuses: Limited warranty for hunting boots only stretches the span of one year.

Would I buy Elk Tracker XD boots? Yes. Would I have given them a thought prior to getting to try them? No. Irish Setter was never on my radar, but they are now. I’m going to be spending a lot more time with this set of footwear, as they are hitting towards the top of my list of favorites. Yeah, I have the brands I’m loyal to and boots that I wear for different occasions…Now, Irish Setter is being added to that list of makes, with the Elk Tracker XD’s being a newly favored model. I would recommend friends check out this line of boots if they were in the market for some.

The Elk Tracker XD line of boots became available online recently – just in time for the upcoming hunting seasons. You can learn more about the boots HERE and check out their offerings HERE.

Author’s Note: Part of having a good experience with any footwear necessitates the use of quality socks. I wore different types of wool hybrid “hiking socks” that are made up of a combination of Merino wool and other materials. Having good socks is as important as having good boots. Tally-ho!

Product Review: Coast WPH30R 1000 lumen rechargeable headlamp

August 5, 2023 by John Petrolino Leave a Comment

The other month I reviewed a Coast flashlight after receiving a care package from the company who is based in Oregon. Among the items that I received was the Coast WPH30R 100 lumen headlamp. I had a chance to spend some time using the headlamp and want to express my impressions of it.

The Coast WPH30R headlamp is a member of a family of products that Coast offers. The “dual power” light comes equipped with a rechargeable COAST ZITHION-X® lithium-ion battery, or can be powered by two CR123 batteries.

I’m not a headlamp connoisseur, but I have owned three prior to receiving the WPH30R. The first lamp I bought 15 years ago for use while hiking Mount Washington in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The lamp was somewhat overpriced by today’s standards, used disposable alkaline AA or AAA batteries, but was a quality unit equipped with multiple LEDs, and I still own and use it to this day for certain applications. I have a couple other cheaper models, one that uses replaceable batteries, and the other that is rechargeable, but the WPH30R is the only one I have that’ll allow the recharge of the included battery and use of disposables to have on hand as a backup.

Needing a headlamp and having the opportunity to put one through the paces requires special circumstances. Why someone would want to have or use one could vary, but the two most common settings I’ve found headlamps to be useful are outdoor activities like camping/hiking/hunting, or for use in an occupational setting.

The number one time I’ve used headlamps the most in my life was while doing electrical work. If you’re in an area where the power is secured and need to work on wiring something, a headlamp is your best friend after a multi-meter.

As a matter of luck, I did have some overhead lighting to install in my garage that required securing the power in the space. I decided to use the WPH30R for when I was sourcing what I needed and for when I was installing the required receptacles for an additional shop light.

What first drew my attention was the brightness of the lamp. The light is equipped to deliver different lumen settings, with 1000 being the brightest. It’s easy to turn the lamp on using a tailcap style pushbutton, and you can then cycle through the levels via a mode switch.

The modes available are not just regulating intensity, but also switched between spotlight modes and flood modes. Depending on what you’re doing would depend on what mode to utilize. While doing electrical work in close quarters, the lamp on higher modes would just wash out what I was doing, so I leaned on the 54 lumen flood mode. Other modes available are: 600 lumen spotlight, 400 lumen flood, and 1000 lumen in combination mode.

I also had the chance to break out the WPH30R during a recent camping trip. I don’t want to offer up any false advertising here, but the camping trip, while it did include sleeping in a tent, was not far into the bush dealing with the great wild wilderness. One of the nights on the trip we dined at an all-you-can-eat buffet in Lancaster, PA, so don’t think I was two clicks away from being in the midst of The Call of the Wild. But, that does not change the fact that we were staying in a tent and dealing with semi-roughing-it circumstances. We did get water in our tent at one point, so that has to count for some street cred, or camp cred in this case.

Traditionally, I’m one of those “don’t use a flashlight in the woods/camping unless you have to” type of guys. General walking and going about campsites, campgrounds, and wilderness, depending on the time of year, phase of the moon, and amount of light pollution in the area, a flashlight is not needed. But when you do need a light and you need your hands, that’s when the headlamp does rapidly become useful.

While hoofing it to the toilet offerings in the night, the lamp did come in handy due to other lights killing my night vision. The whole phase of the moon and stars thing is fine and dandy until some overzealous fellow camper blasts you in the face with their light. So when headed off into the unknown abyss to take care of final biological needs before bed, it was very useful.

The place where the headlamp really shined for me, pun intended, was at the site when trying to find gear or get things together to make a fire when the sun already set. We did set up camp when it was getting dark in the first place, so it was super useful then.

One of the features is that the light also has a red setting. This was invaluable because the bugs would attack me like a magpie gets on a mailman when using the white light settings. Heading into the tent with a white light on was setting yourself up for a night full of assaults. Bar none, the red feature elevated this headlamp above my others.

The other exciting thing, and it pains me to say that this is something that excites me at this age, is as noted above, it’s rechargeable and uses a standard USB C charger to charge it. The body of the light, in addition to the battery flying solo, are both equipped with female USB C ports for keeping the unit powered up. Coast includes a charging cable that allows users to go from USB C to USB C or from USB A to USB C all on the same wire.

When charging, there is an LED indicator that will go from red to green when topped off. Naturally the amount of time it takes to charge the light will depend on the quality and wattage of your power source, but it being a standard style port that you might also have on your phone, charging in your vehicle or anywhere else you may have a cable increases the convenience factor here tenfold. Those of you that use a phone with that “other” type of proprietary cable, you’ll have to use the one that Coast supplied. The rest of us civilized types will be able to swap out between the phone and lamp. I jest, but only slightly.

If you’re going to be in the bush or without a power source for an extended period – and really I recommend this for backups anyhow – you can keep CR123 batteries on hand to use if the rechargeable battery runs out of juice. The battery life of the lamp, depending on mode, is anywhere from 3 to 23 hours.

My first impressions were positive when using this lamp. It’s a quality made light and the included band is comfortable and easy to adjust. The head can be tilted up and down at an angle in order to direct the light where you want it to shine. The different modes allow for a varied amount of circumstances. Keeping this headlamp in a toolbox or work truck for occupational purposes would make perfect sense. The light would also be a great asset to have on many of the outdoor “ing” activities such as camping, hiking, night fishing, hunting, etc. Emergency response personnel might find the headlamp useful too.

Pluses: Non-proprietary charging port and unit is rechargeable. Plenty of modes from super bright at 1000 lumen, down to 54 lumen. Lifetime warranty. Adjustable angle. Comfortable strap.

Minuses: A little pricey at $69.99. Not super heavy, but also not the lightest model on the planet.

Overall, I dig this headlamp. Can you get less expensive lights like this out there? Kind of. But are any of those other companies going to standby their products with a lifetime warranty? Will they perform the same? Doubtful. I can see this being the headlamp to turn to after blowing through a few lesser quality lights, to be done with the topic of needing a headlamp for good. Or just start with a good one in the first place.

Would I buy one of these? knowing what I know about it after using it, yes. Maybe prior to giving it a test drive I’d be apprehensive to shell out the money on a headlamp when I could buy a handheld EDC for nearly the same price, but this unit did impress me enough to know what I was missing on my other headlamps. I’m certainly going to keep the Coast WPH30R headlamp in circulation for use when working or engaging in outdoor activities. I also would recommend this to a friend for purchase if they were in the market for a headlamp like this.
