Biden Signs Legislation to Declassify Coronavirus Origins, Overturn D.C. Crime Bill

March 20, 2023 by Jordan Dixon-Hamilton Leave a Comment

President Joe Biden signed a pair of bills into law on Monday that would declassify information related to the origins of the coronavirus and overturn the controversial Washington, DC, soft-on-crime bill.

The Covid-19 Origin Act, introduced by Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), unanimously passed both chambers of Congress.

The bill directs the Director of National Intelligence to “declassify any and all information relating to potential links between the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the origin” of the coronavirus.

Hawley introduced the legislation after the Department of Energy concluded, with “low confidence,” that the coronavirus could have originated from a Chinese laboratory.

Biden acknowledged the need to “get to the bottom” of the coronavirus’ origins in a statement on Monday.

“We need to get to the bottom of COVID-19’s origins to help ensure we can better prevent future pandemics,” Biden said in a statement. “My Administration will continue to review all classified information relating to COVID–19’s origins, including potential links to the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

“In implementing this legislation, my Administration will declassify and share as much of that information as possible, consistent with my constitutional authority to protect against the disclosure of information that would harm national security,” Biden added.

On the same day, Biden signed a Republican-led effort to overturn D.C.’s crime bill. That crime bill reduced penalties for several violent offenses like carjacking, burglary, and robbery.

Although D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) vetoed the bill, the D.C. Council overrode the mayor’s veto by a 12-1 vote last month.

The March For Our Lives movement was spurred by the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in 2018. However, Congress can override local D.C. laws through a rarely used resolution of disapproval. Biden alienated members of his party when he signaled support for the GOP-led effort to overturn the crime bill.

“I support D.C. statehood and home-rule — but I don’t support some of the changes D.C. Council put forward over the mayor’s objections — such as lowering penalties for carjackings,” the president tweeted on March 2. “If the Senate votes to overturn what D.C. Council did — I’ll sign it.”

Defund-the-police Democrat calls for more police as her district continues brutal crime spiral: ‘I feel betrayed by the department’

March 20, 2023 by Joseph MacKinnon Leave a Comment

Another Democrat has been confronted with the disastrous consequences of the policies she once championed.

San Francisco City Supervisor Hillary Ronen announced last week that she is “begging” for more police officers for her crime-ravaged city, particularly in the district she oversees. This desperate plea comes just a few years after the Democrat called for the police to be defunded and suggested that half-measures amounted to a “slap in the face.”

How it started

Ronen assumed office in 2017, representing San Francisco’s District 9 on the 11-member city board of supervisors. The 47-year-old Berkeley Law graduate was re-elected in November 2020.

During her time in office, she has lent her support to the George Soros-backed leftist district attorney, Chesa Boudin. Boudin, whose parents were members of a leftist terrorist organization, has been accused of overseeing a crime surge in the city.

Whereas in 2016 Ronen campaigned on making “police part of our community,” in 2020, she jumped on the BLM bandwagon and pushed for reductions to police budgets.

Amid the devastating BLM riots, Democrat Mayor London Breed proposed a $35 million cut from the San Francisco Police Department’s budget over two years. This 2.6% reduction was not enough for Ronen, reported Mission Local.

Ronen called the budget reduction “a slap in the face,” saying, “We can’t just give lip service to this time and this movement.”

She also suggested it would be prudent to get “police out of the business of responding to homeless people for being homeless,” to plan on reducing the presence of law enforcement at public schools, and to reconsider having mounted police officers at all.

Ronen underscored that defunding the police was ultimately about repurposing a “system that is rotten to its core.”

In August 2020, Ronen clarified her position, tweeting, “I want to make it clear that I believe strongly in defunding the police and reducing the number of officers on our force. For decades we’ve had an imbalance in our city’s budget, with hundreds of millions of dollars going to SFPD to have them do work they are not qualified to do.”

Breed ultimately diverted $120 million from the police and sheriff’s departments in 2020.

How it’s going

Mission Local reported that Ronen got what she wanted.

The number of full-duty SFPD officers is at 1,514 as of last week, down from 1,840 in 2019 and 1,872 in 2017.

The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office indicated that in 2022, only 3.9% of the 58,681 reported incidents resulted in an arrest.

San Francisco scores a 2 out of 100 (100 being safest) on Neighborhood Watch’s crime index. The chance of becoming a victim of a violent crime is 1 in 186, and the likelihood of becoming a victim of a property crime is 1 in 20, as a CNN reporter recently discovered.

According to the SFPD, between Jan. 1 and March 12, there were 66 reports of arson; 5,505 reports of larceny theft; 1,062 burglary reports; 428 assaults; 525 robberies; 39 rapes; 1,123 motor vehicle thefts; and 9 murders.

Mission, Bayview, and Ingleside, all overseen by Ronen, accounted for 41% of arson incidents in the city during that time period; 18% of the larceny thefts; 29.8% of burglaries; 38% of assaults; 37% of robberies; 36% of rapes; 50% of motor vehicle thefts; and 66% of murders. At least half of San Francisco’s reports of human trafficking this year have also taken place in Ronen’s district.

Only In Your State ranks two zones in Ronen’s district as among the “most dangerous areas in San Francisco,” particularly after dark.

During a Budget and Appropriations Committee meeting on March 15, Ronen implored the SFPD to prioritize police presence in her district rather than spending overtime on an anti-retail theft program, reported Fox News Digital.

“I’ve been begging this department to give the Mission what it deserves in terms of police presence all year long,” said Ronen. “And I have been told time and time and time and time again there are no officers that we can send to Mission.”

Despite having previously suggested anything less than a major cut to police budgets was a “slap in the face,” Ronen claimed Wednesday she felt the SFPD had let her down.

“It hurts. And I feel betrayed by the department. I feel betrayed by the mayor. I feel betrayed by the priorities of the city,” said Ronen.

Amid her efforts to reverse the damage her previous recommendations have inflicted on San Francisco, Ronen is presently championing race-based reparations. She recently noted that she cannot “wait to get to work” implementing recommendations to hand out $5 million to select black residents, cancel their debt, and guarantee their income.

TheBlaze previously reported that Ronen has admitted the city does not have the money for these reparations.

Alan Dershowitz: Trump Indictment Would be ‘Targeted Injustice’

March 19, 2023 by Joel B. Pollak Leave a Comment

Harvard Law School professor emeritus and noted civil libertarian Alan Dershowitz has panned the potential prosecution of former President Donald Trump, saying he is the victim of “targeted injustice” by Democrats.

Trump announced Saturday that he expected to be arrested by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg on charges of falsifying business records related to an alleged “hush money” payment to porn star Stormy Daniels.

The payment to Daniels was to ensure her silence toward the end of the 2016 campaign about an alleged affair she had with Trump. But the payment was not illegal — and it did not even violate campaign finance rules, as the Federal Election Commission (FEC) apparently concluded in dropping its investigation into the matter. Federal and local prosecutors who have targeted Trump in every other way have also shied away from the case.

In an essay for the New York Sun, Dershowitz described the looming decision to indict and prosecute Trump as “targeted injustice,” given that other politicians are not prosecuted for doing substantially the same thing:

Manhattan district attorney, Alvin Bragg, [is] targeting the former president and current candidate, Donald Trump. Does anyone actually believe that if someone else were accused of paying hush money to avoid a sex scandal in the manner that Mr. Trump is suspected of doing, he would be prosecuted?

After spending months searching the criminal code for a law that Mr. Trump might be accused of violating, Mr. Bragg has apparently landed on a highly questionable campaign contribution provision that has never before been used in a comparable situation.

…

All decent people, whether politically opposed to Mr. Trump (as I am) or supportive of his candidacy, should be concerned about this weaponizing of the prosecutor’s office for the political purpose of preventing a potential candidate from running for office.

Dershowitz also told the Epoch Times that Bragg, who was elected with the help of $1 million in spending by left-wing billionaire George Soros, is using “made-up laws” to prosecute Trump under a federal statute in state court.

Others have arrived at similar conclusions. Andrew McCarthy, a former Department of Justice prosecutor who is often quite critical of Trump, has called the impending prosecution a “ridiculous pile of bull cookies.”

Dershowitz has also written a book about Democrats’ effort to target Trump and how it has hurt American institutions and values: Get Trump: The Threat to Civil Liberties, Due Process, and Our Constitutional Rule of Law.

Video shows road rage suspect allegedly fire 12 shots with toddler in car, hit driver and critically injure innocent bystander: ‘He was trying to kill me’

March 19, 2023 by Paul Sacca Leave a Comment

An apparent road rage incident in Georgia turned dangerous when a driver allegedly unleashed a barrage of gunfire while he had an infant in his vehicle.

Michael Gabriel was driving to a doctor’s appointment on Wednesday morning when another driver allegedly brake-checked him for possibly tailgating. Gabriel said the driver in front of him slammed on his brakes so hard that he was forced to swerve into the outside lane to avoid a collision.

Gabriel then pulled up next to the Ford Mustang on Ga. 365.

“He didn’t like getting flipped off,” Gabriel told The Times of Gainesville, Georgia.

The driver brake-checked Gabriel again. Then the Mustang driver got behind Gabriel and allegedly fired off three gunshots.

“He’s a little bit behind me, kind of diagonally,” Gabriel explained. “So I look back and that’s when I saw his window coming down, the gun coming out. Pow! Pow! Pow!”

A bullet pierced his back window, traveled through his car seat, and tore into his right shoulder.

Gabriel told WSB-TV, “There wasn’t a warning shot. He was trying to kill me.”

Gabriel pulled out his smartphone to take a video and capture the license plate number on the Mustang. However, when he got near the Mustang, he dropped his phone as nine more gunshots rang out. The alleged gunman got out of his car and reportedly fired on Gabriel’s SUV.

During the second shooting, a bullet struck Gabriel in the lower back.

“Had that back shot had any more power, or if the trajectory had been any different, if that seat hadn’t — if it wasn’t built exactly like it was, that could have took out a lot of my organs,” Gabriel said. “It could have been game over.”

Gabriel called the police. He was rushed to the hospital and released later that day.

“It took a serious hand to God to keep me alive and here today,” Gabriel said.

However, a 65-year-old innocent bystander was not so lucky. Paula Kay Blackwell was “caught in the crossfire,” according to Lt. Kevin Holbrook of the Gainesville Police Department. Blackwell was shot in the kidney and was in critical condition as of Thursday, police said.

Video shows Gabriel’s Chevrolet Tahoe riddled with bullet holes.

Gainesville police arrested 26-year-old Steven Dallas Cooper. He was charged with aggravated battery, criminal attempt to commit murder, criminal damage to property, reckless conduct, and aggravated assault. Cooper is being held without bond in Hall County Jail.

Cooper had a 2-year-old child in the backseat of the car during the alleged shooting, according to police.

Gabriel’s advice for future road rage situations, “It’s so not worth this. If someone makes you mad, wave at them and say a prayer for them.”

Study: 22 Per Cent of Female Tinder Users in Spain Experience Sexual Violence

March 19, 2023 by Chris Tomlinson Leave a Comment

A Spanish study has revealed around 22 per cent of users of the hook-up app Tinder have experienced a form of sexual violence, with a majority of women saying they felt pressure to have sex.

The study ‘Apps Without Sexual Violence’ was conducted by the Young Women Federation (FMJ) and funded by the Spanish Government Delegation against Gender Violence, and interviewed 963 women who use the hook-up app Tinder.

The results of the study found that as many as 70 per cent of the users felt pressured to have sex, while 21.7 per cent said they had been subjected to sexual violence after meeting someone on Tinder, newspaper El Mundo reports.

President of the FMJ Ada Santana said that 40 per cent of respondents maintain violent sexual relationships due to the influence of pornography, and 57 per cent have been pressured to drink alcohol to maintain their relationships.

Spanish Prosecutor Links Pornorgpahy Use to Youth Sex Attack Surge https://t.co/OmTZHPeDdl

— Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) March 12, 2023

Earlier this month, Spanish juvenile prosecutor  Eduardo Esteban linked pornography consumption to increases in sex attack cases among Spanish youth.

“They go to pornography as if it were a tutorial that we handle on the Internet,” Esteban said.

“There is really no sexual training for minors, who are resorting to alternative routes, nothing desirable, such as pornography.”

The FMJ study revealed that at least 27.4 per cent of the respondents claimed that their partner they had met on Tinder tried to film their sexual encounter without their permission, and 27.7 per cent had sex without a condom despite the women saying they did not wish to.

Prostitution is also a major issue on Tinder for some women, according to the study. Around 72 per cent women claimed that they had seen men who had profiles advertising that they would give them gifts or money, while 60 per cent said they had been offered money or gifts by men they had met from the app.

The researchers also used two fake profiles to analyse 1,400 profiles of men and women aged 18 to 55 and found that men aged 35 to 55 often requested nude photos or tried to engage in sexually explicit conversations during their initial messages.
