PHOTOS – Officials Praised for Rescuing Injured Bald Eagle: ‘A Big Thank You’

March 26, 2023 by Amy Furr Leave a Comment

Officials in New Hartford, Connecticut, are being praised for rescuing an injured bald eagle Saturday afternoon.

When New Hartford police and officials with the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection emergency dispatch received multiple calls regarding the bird, officials took action, NBC Connecticut reported.

Constables and troopers responded the scene on Steele Road and located the bird in a tree. However, they soon realized its wings had been injured.

In a social media post, Connecticut State Police said the bald eagle was found by Browns Corner Park.

“ENCON police were requested to respond with speciality equipment to safely handle the bird. Once on scene, ENCON police was able to capture the bird,” the agency noted:

Following the rescue, officials took the bird for treatment and rehabilitation.

“A BIG thank you to all three agencies coming together to help rescue this majestic bird!” state police said.

The Connecticut State Environmental Conservation Police noted that before officers arrived on scene to aid the bald eagle, it had been spooked, which caused it to retreat into the nearby tree:

“One Officer was able to use a water rescue throw bag to hit a nearby branch subsequently shaking the bird loose which then glided down to the ground about 200’ away where another Conservation Officer was able to safely capture it,” the agency’s post detailed.

According to Audubon, the bald eagle often feeds on carrion and it is known as a powerful predator.

“Seriously declining during much of the 20th century, the Bald Eagle has made a comeback in many areas since the 1970s. Big concentrations can be found wintering along rivers or reservoirs in some areas,” the website read.

In 1782, the bald eagle was named the national bird of the United States, and it was displayed on the Great Seal of the nation, per the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs.

“Bald eagles, like other eagles worldwide, had been seen by many as symbols of strength, courage, freedom and immortality for generations. And, unlike other eagles, the bald eagle was indigenous only to North America,” the agency said.

Female officer says she was pressured into oral sex with coworker, cops took bets on who would have sex with her first

March 25, 2023 by Paul Sacca Leave a Comment

The first female police officer ever to serve in a small Michigan town claims that she was the victim of intense sexual harassment and sexual discrimination that forced her to resign.

Teresa Williams, 35, says that she was groped by a supervisor at the Iron Mountain Police Department, and she was pressured into oral sex with a coworker. Williams’ lawsuit also claims that she was “held to a completely different standard” on the job than her male coworkers.

In October 2017, just three weeks after being hired by the Iron Mountain Police Department, Williams was allegedly pressured to engage in a bizarre initiation ritual. Her former supervisor, Joseph Dumais, allegedly pressured her into doing a Fireball whiskey shot and making out with him.

“Plaintiff refused and said the whole thing was made up. Dumais responded that it was required and that everyone had to do it as standard protocol,” the lawsuit alleges. “To allegedly demonstrate, Dumais took an initial shot along with a former county dispatcher (male) then kissed him. Ultimately, Plaintiff buckled to the pressure and took the ‘IMPD shot’ with Dumais who, as a result, kissed Plaintiff and stated that she was now ‘officially part of IMPD.'”

Later, Dumais allegedly asked Williams to do another shot with him and she agreed after initially declining. The lawsuit filed on Feb. 13 alleges that Dumais then groped Williams.

The suit says, “Dumais pressured Plaintiff into taking the second IMPD shot, however this time Dumais put his hand between Plaintiff’s legs and grabbed her genitals.”

Williams allegedly “froze in fear.”

In another alleged incident, Williams drove Budek home after frequenting a bar. Budek purportedly instructed Williams to stop the car because he had to “tell her something.”

Fox News reported, “Budek went on to allegedly tell her about ‘how hot her ass looked in her duty pants,’ and pulled her hand down to his genitals. He then attempted to kiss the woman, but she turned away, and he kissed her neck, according to the suit. The incident in the car only stopped after Budek allegedly shoved her hand down his pants, and she stopped resisting, resulting in him letting go of her hand, the suit claimed.”

Williams alleges that Budek kissed and groped her when she dropped him off at his house.

Williams allegedly went to Budek’s house to watch a movie. Budek’s wife excused herself from watching the movie and then Budek pressured Williams to perform oral sex on him, according to the lawsuit.

“I said I wanted to go home,” Williams allegedly told Budek. “I basically felt helpless … like I didn’t have a choice.”

She added, “If I didn’t go along with what was going on, they were going to ruin me and make my life a living hell.”

Williams said that her coworkers saw her as a “piece of meat.”

The former cop stated, “The way that they would look at me was one of the biggest things. It made me feel like I was a piece of meat.”

Williams told NBC, “Just because you wear a badge and you’re a cop, it doesn’t mean you’re above the law. It doesn’t mean you get to treat people however you want.”

“I want my story to be told because I want people to know — other women to know — that they’re not alone,” Williams told the Detroit Free Press. “And I want other women to know that it’s OK to be embarrassed about stuff like this. . . . You shouldn’t have to hide from it. People need to be held accountable for this type of bulls**t”

Williams allegedly informed her union that she was being discriminated against in November 2020. However, she was reportedly “advised against being a ‘whistleblower’ and told she could be fired if her claims were determined unfounded, according to the claims.”

Jack Schulz, Williams’ attorney, said his client has faced “the most horrific” abuse that he had seen in his career.

“Rather than embrace diversity and inclusion, these officers, including leadership, have acted with complete impunity,” Schulz said. “Their actions are disgraceful, and they must be held accountable.”

Schulz said that the police occupation was a “dream job” for Williams.

Gregory R. Grant of Cummings McClorey Davis & Acho, the attorney representing the defendants, said, “There are two sides to every story and my clients are looking forward to presenting the facts in court. The City of Iron Mountain has always been committed to creating a safe and respectful work environment for all of its employees.”

Williams resigned from the Iron Mountain Police Department last April. She claimed that she was given a choice of resignation or being fired.

Williams said, “My biggest thing is having integrity, standing tall and doing the right thing. I know that this kind of stuff happens everywhere. I’m not the only female that this has happened to.”

VIDEO: Suspected Serial Attacker in Custody After Laundromat Beating

March 25, 2023 by Amy Furr Leave a Comment

Law enforcement in Nashville arrested a 32-year-old suspected serial attacker on Thursday, a person allegedly caught on video targeting an individual at a laundromat this week.

Khadree Renfro has been charged with three counts of attempted criminal homicide, Fox 17 reported Friday.

Detectives with the Violent Crimes Division and the East Precinct’s Community Field Intelligence Team arrested Renfro on Pennock Avenue, the Metro Nashville Police Department said in a social media post on Thursday night.

BREAKING: The suspected attacker, Khadree Renfro, 32, was arrested tonight on Pennock Avenue by detectives from the Violent Crimes Division & the East Precinct’s Community Field Intelligence Team. Charges are forthcoming.

— Metro Nashville PD (@MNPDNashville) March 24, 2023

The department also announced his bond was set at $150,000, and noted officials are still investigating the suspect:

Renfro has been booked on 3 counts of attempted criminal homicide. His bond this morning was set at $150k. The investigation into him continues.

Per the Fox article, he is a suspect in three other attacks, and the most recent incident occurred Wednesday at a laundromat on Dickerson Pike.

Surveillance video from inside the building shows an individual, wearing an orange shirt, standing to the right side of the frame.

Moments later, the suspect, wearing all black, approaches and appears to hit the person multiple times with some form of stick.

The apparent victim falls to the ground as the suspect allegedly continues beating the person:

Please be on the lookout for this man who randomly and without provocation attacked a 45 yr old in a laundry mat on Dickerson Pk Wed night. He is a suspect in 3 other similar attacks on 3/16, 18 & 19. He may be driving a small silver SUV. Have info? 📞 615-742-7463. pic.twitter.com/TVWl36bwyk

— Metro Nashville PD (@MNPDNashville) March 23, 2023

A laundromat employee told WKRN, “It happened last night. It’s just like the place is empty, like he was waiting on the right moment to come in.”

The outlet noted that on March 16, a man having car trouble was targeted, then on the 18, it was a man outside a gas station.

On the 19, a jogger was attacked with a pipe and had to be taken to the hospital due to deep cuts on his legs and a head injury.

As the crime wave continues sweeping across President Joe Biden’s (D) America, citizens are “more likely now than at any time over the past five decades to say there is more crime in their local area than there was a year ago,” a Gallup article published in October said.

“The 56% of U.S. adults who report an increase in crime where they live marks a five-percentage-point uptick since last year and is the highest by two points in Gallup’s trend dating back to 1972,” the article stated.

Hostage saved after police blow away machete-wielding suspect

March 22, 2023 by Joseph MacKinnon Leave a Comment

North Miami Beach Police officers took decisive action Thursday, sparing a hostage from a potential beheading.

The officer-involved shooting took place just before 2 p.m. on March 16, near Northeast 2nd Avenue in North Miami.

Edridge Alexis, 38, allegedly threatened his family with a machete, then made his way into a medical office building, where he took a woman hostage, reported the Miami Herald.

Police responded to the scene after receiving reports of a man wielding a large knife near Alexis’ home.

According to NMBP Chief Harvette Smith, officers first attempted nonlethal means to defuse the situation, imploring Alexis to drop the weapon. After the suspect threatened his own life with the blade, officers reportedly tased him; however, this proved to only enrage him further.

Alexis reportedly ran into a nearby medical office building armed with the machete.

Inside, the suspect allegedly tried to break down several locked doors, prompting health care providers in one instance to barricade an entryway. Having failed to gain entry to the medical offices, Alexis allegedly took a woman in the lobby hostage.

Again police ordered the suspect to drop his weapon, and again he refused.

“The machete [was] pointed at her neck in an attempt to kill her,” said Smith.

With the blade so near the victim’s throat, police weren’t going to take any more chances.

Smith said, “At that point, our officers again gave commands for the subject to drop the knife. The subject refused to drop the knife at that point, making my officers [resort] to using deadly force to save a life.”

Police indicated that three shots were fired in total, killing Alexis, saving the woman’s life, and restoring order.

The suspect’s family members expressed disbelief that Alexis would threaten multiple lives including that of an innocent woman, reported WPLG.

“They can’t tell me, like, ‘hey, he got a machete, he trying to cut somebody’s throat,’ nah, he ain’t like that,” said Wilkenson Alexis, the suspect’s brother. “They’re lying. Just be real about [it] … say you killed someone.”

Alexis had previously been charged for various crimes in Miami-Dade County over the years, including trespassing, assault, armed robbery, burglary, battery, driving with a suspended license, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. He spent the past year in jail and was released in early February, reported WPLG.

Another one of the suspect’s relatives said, “For him to go inside the building and put the machete on someone’s neck, they have to give me the proof for that. He’s not like that.”

The North Miami Beach Police Department noted on March 18 that “we turned over all body worn camera footage and additional evidence to [the Florida Department of Law Enforcement] as they continue their investigation into Thursday’s incident. They have our full cooperation.”

The property manager of the office building where the shooting occurred indicated that the incident was caught on camera and that footage corroborates the police officers’ account of what took place.

Sheriff, deputies, father accused in kidnapping conspiracy; attorney says charges are political retribution

March 19, 2023 by Michele Blood Leave a Comment

A sheriff and two deputies were arrested Thursday after allegedly conspiring to help a friend kidnap his own daughter, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

“The fact that we arrested one of our own sent shock waves through the [Missouri Sheriffs Association] conference,” Washington County, Missouri Sheriff Zach Jacobsen told the outlet.

Iron County, Missouri Sheriff Jeff Burkett and a pair of his deputies stand accused of scheming to help Donald Gaston kidnap his own daughter. The quartet are charged with organized, joint criminal activity under a “street gang” statute in addition to other individual charges, NBC News reported.

“These charges are 100% politically motivated,” Burkett’s lawyer, Gabe Crocker, told the Post-Dispatch. “It’s simply another chapter in the long-term effort to remove the outsider sheriff.”

Jacobsen, the sheriff from neighboring Washington County, said someone called his office to report that law enforcement officials in Iron County were allegedly abusing their police powers back in February, according to KSDK.

Jacobsen then asked the Missouri Highway Patrol to conduct the investigation. Washington County’s prosecutor brought the charges, the outlet also explained.

The alleged plot to help Gaston kidnap his own daughter reportedly began over a dispute Gaston had with the child’s mother over a $50 bottle of liquor, according to the Post-Dispatch.

A Jefferson County police officer reportedly located the woman and child, who were “fine,” the Post-Dispatch also reported.

In addition to the street gang activities, charges against the group include misusing 911, making a false report, looking up criminal records under false pretenses, and attempted kidnapping, according to KDSK.

Burkett was released from a hospitalization for “complications from his ongoing battle with lingering Covid-19 symptoms and complications” on March 10, according to a Facebook post from the Iron County Sheriff’s Office. In his mugshot, Burkett is wearing what appears to be an oxygen line leading to his nose.

“They’ve been trying to get rid of him since he won the Republican primary for sheriff in Iron County in 2020,” Crocker told KSDK.

Crocker told the outlet Washington County prosecutors are asking a judge to require Burkett’s removal from office if he is able to post bail.

Jacobsen, the sheriff from neighboring Washington County, reportedly offered to help patrol Iron County while Iron County’s sheriff and two of its deputies are in jail. In the sheriff’s absence, Iron County’s coroner, Tim Harbison, is tasked with managing the short-staffed office.

Burkett, Cozad, Bresnahan, and Gaston are all jailed in lieu of bond. Burkett’s bond was set at $500,000 and bond for the remaining three was set at $400,000, according to NBC News. A hearing is scheduled for Wednesday to request reconsideration of the bond amounts.
