Six Democrats Join House GOP to Block Biden from Turning Federal Lands into Migrant Camps

December 1, 2023 by John Binder Leave a Comment

Just six Democrats joined House Republicans this week to prevent President Joe Biden from turning federal lands into migrant camps for tens of thousands of illegal aliens who have been released into the United States interior.

On Thursday, the House passed Rep. Nicole Malliotakis’s legislation known as the “Protecting our Communities from Failure to Secure the Border Act” to block the federal government from using federal lands to house illegal aliens in a 224-203 vote.

Joining House Republicans to pass the legislation were Reps. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), Don Davis (D-NC), Jared Golden (D-ME), Vicente Gonzalez Jr. (D-TX), Mary Peltola (D-AK), and Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA).

Malliotakis had introduced the legislation just as New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) and New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) got approval from the Biden administration to move hundreds, and potentially thousands, of border crossers and illegal aliens onto Floyd Bennett Field.

“Turning our federal parks into encampments for unvetted migrants from all over the world is unfair to surrounding communities and the taxpayers who are being forced to foot the bill while our Mayor bankrupts our city and slashes services from our citizens,” Malliotakis said in a statement.

The historic, federally-owned airfield was used by the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy during World War II. Before then, the airfield was also used as New York City’s first municipal airport and has had famous guests visit it in prior decades, including Howard Hughes and Howdy Doody.

The Biden administration, as Breitbart News reported, had lobbied Democrats to oppose the legislation — claiming it would limit the powers of the Department of the Interior and the Department of Agriculture.

Under Biden, an unprecedented number of illegal aliens are being released into American communities every day.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Inspector General (IG) estimates the agency is freeing more than 60,000 illegal aliens into the U.S. interior every month. Over a year, this amounts to Biden releasing more than 720,000 illegal aliens into the U.S. interior.

GOP Members Warn George Santos Expulsion Sets ‘Dangerous Precedent’

December 1, 2023 by Nick Gilbertson Leave a Comment

Many Republicans are expressing deep concern over a “dangerous precedent” being set by former Rep. George Santos’s (R-NY) expulsion from the U.S. House of Representatives without being convicted of a crime.

Santos was ousted from the lower chamber on Friday in a 311-114 vote, as Breitbart News reported, with 105 Republicans breaking with 206 Democrats to boot the congressman, setting a new precedent.

The bottom line is today’s unprecedented action taken by the House could influence and endanger George Santos’ right to a fair trial by playing judge, jury, and executioner.

— Rep. Cory Mills 🇺🇸 (@RepMillsPress) December 1, 2023

Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) noted after the vote that in the history of the U.S. Congress, just five members had been expelled, “three of which had fought for the Confederacy or were expelled in 1861, and the other two who had been convicted, not accused or indicted, but convicted of actual criminality.”

He added:

We set a very dangerous precedent in America when this institution is allowed to expel and play judge, juror, and executioner on someone who had not had yet their constitutional right to have their day in court to approach their accusers before a jury of their peers.

Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) also took to X to share a similar sentiment.

“What happened to the presumption of innocence principle?” he wondered, adding that Santos’s “expulsion sets a dangerous precedent.”

What happened to the presumption of innocence principle?

The House just expelled a Member without a criminal conviction for the first time since the Civil War!

We still don’t know much about Mr. Santos, but his expulsion sets a dangerous precedent.

— Rep Andy Biggs (@RepAndyBiggsAZ) December 1, 2023

Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC) wondered, “What about Santos warranted departing from 234 years of the precedent that expulsion from Congress for alleged criminal acts follows conviction?”

“I couldn’t identify anything,” he added.

What about Santos warranted departing from 234 years of the precedent that expulsion from Congress for alleged criminal acts follows conviction? I couldn’t identify anything. I’ll be interested to see any comment that can.

— Rep. Dan Bishop (@RepDanBishop) December 1, 2023

When the tally was rolling in during the vote, and it became evident Santos would be removed from Congress, Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-WI) posted on X that “Removing a sitting member of Congress who has yet to be convicted of any crimes sets a dangerous precedent.”

They should be the judge on removing him.

“New York’s Third Congressional District elected Mr. Santos,” wrote Tiffany. “They should be the judge on removing him.”

During an appearance on Newsmax Newsline after the vote, Rep. Eric Burleson (R-MO) voiced his worries as well:

— NEWSMAX (@NEWSMAX) December 1, 2023

On Thursday, the eve of the vote, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) noted that Republicans gathered in a conference meeting where members expressed differing views.

.@SpeakerJohnson on resolution to expel Rep. George Santos (R-NY) from Congress: “I trust that people will make that decision thoughtfully and in good faith. I personally have real reservations about doing this. I’m concerned about a precedent that may be set for that.” pic.twitter.com/6lXBjeW6qt

— CSPAN (@cspan) November 29, 2023

He noted some members, including himself, harbored the concerns laid out by Mills, Biggs, and others about the precedent this sets moving forward, while others contended that “upholding the rule of law requires us to take this step now because some of the things that he’s alleged to have done, with the House Ethics Committee having done their job, are infractions against the House itself,” Johnson said.

Johnson, who emphasized there would be no whipping of the vote, shared he had “real reservations about doing this.”

“I’m concerned about a precedent that may be set for that,” he said.

Rep. Randy Weber (R-TX) held the same viewpoint on Thursday before Friday’s vote, saying it would be “lowering the bar for the future.”

While I disagree with the actions of Geroge Santos, expelling him would set a dangerous precedent in Congress, lowering the bar for the future.

He will have his day in court and at the ballot box.

— Randy Weber (@TXRandy14) December 1, 2023

“He will have his day in court and at the ballot box,” wrote Weber in a post on X.

In October, Santos was charged federally in the Eastern District of New York with 23 counts in a superseding indictment, ranging from conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States to counts of wire fraud to counts of making materially false statements to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and more.

As Breitbart News noted, an Investigative Subcommittee (ISC) report on Santos released by the House Ethics Committee on November 16 found that the Santos campaign used donations for botox treatments, OnlyFans, and lodging in Atlantic City and Las Vegas.

Republicans React to George Santos’s Fate: Expulsion Vote Could Be Used as ‘Political Warfare’

December 1, 2023 by Hannah Bleau Knudsen Leave a Comment

Some Republican members of Congress offered a warning following the vote to expel now-former Rep. George Santos (R-NY) from Congress, cautioning that an expulsion vote of this nature could be used as “political warfare” in the future.

Congress took unprecedented action on Friday and voted to expel Santos, even though he had not been convicted of a crime and had declared his innocence. While there had been prior attempts to expel the controversial congressman, a report from the House Ethics Committee served as the final nail in the coffin, including “evidence Santos knowingly filed false reports with the Federal Election Commission, used campaign funds for personal purposes including subscriptions to OnlyFans and botox treatments, and willfully violated ethics laws as it relates to his Financial Disclosure (FD) Statements filed with the House,” as Breitbart News detailed.

However, some Republicans still believe it was wrong to expel Santos, given that he had not been convicted of a crime. Notably, 105 Republicans voted to expel him, while 112 did not.

“Throughout the history of our nation, neither the House nor Senate has expelled a member that was not convicted for a crime or committed treason,” Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-CA) said in a statement following the vote.

While he said he did not condone Santos’s actions and urged him to resign “in light of the evidence against him presented in the Ethics Committee report,” LaMalfa said that he does not believe that Congress should “create a new precedent.”

“Given the merging of politics and justice these days, an expulsion vote could be used as political warfare or to tip the scale in a decision of an ongoing court case,” he warned.

“It seems the sentence is being handed down before the conviction,” he continued. “Congress should follow the precedent of the last 232 years and only vote to expel once a member is convicted of a crime or treason.”

— Rep. Doug LaMalfa (@RepLaMalfa) December 1, 2023

Republican Rep. French Hill (R-AR) agreed that the vote sets a “dangerous precedent,” even though he personally believes Santos should have resigned.

“I have called on Rep. George Santos to resign since his fraudulent and discrediting conduct and inappropriate actions became public,” French said in a statement.

“Prior to today, the House had voted to expel only five Members of Congress, including only two since 1980 – both of whom were convicted of their crimes before expulsion,” he continued.

“I believe that expelling a Member of Congress before conviction sets a dangerous precedent, which is why today I voted no to expel Rep. Santos,” he added.

Even Rep. Nancy Mace (R-NY), who deemed Santos an “ass,” said he still “deserves the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law.”

“Today’s vote was not about accountability, which should have been in the hands of the courts and the people of NY-03,” she wrote.

“This was about shifting the balance of power in Congress, and I won’t play those games,” Mace, who voted nay, added.

— Rep. Nancy Mace (@RepNancyMace) December 1, 2023

Rep. Josh Brecheen (R-OK) also agreed that the allegations against Santos were “abhorrent and unbecoming for a Member of Congress,” but he added, “We should allow the court to pronounce guilt before moving to expulsion, in keeping with precedent.”

“Instead of expulsion at this time, Congressman Santos should have been punished for ‘disorderly behavior’ as stated in the Constitution and subsequently resigned,” he added.

“What happened to the presumption of innocence principle?” Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) asked.

“The House just expelled a Member without a criminal conviction for the first time since the Civil War! We still don’t know much about Mr. Santos, but his expulsion sets a dangerous precedent,” he added.

Rep. Scott Fitzgerald (R-WI) emphasized that he believes in the principles of “innocent until proven guilty,” although he said the Ethics Committee’s report was “concerning.” However, he said Congress “should not prejudge the outcome when he hasn’t had his day in court.”

He added:

It is also concerning that so much attention has been heaped on George Santos when Secretary Alejandro Mayoraks, who has presided over and encouraged the lawless disaster at our southern border, has received not even the slightest of reprimands from Congress or the President.

“I voted against the resolution to expel Representative George Santos, but the measure garnered at least 2/3’s of the votes in the House and he is now no longer a member of Congress,” Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) wrote following the vote.

Biden Opposes Plan to Stop Federal Lands from Becoming Migrant Camps

November 28, 2023 by John Binder Leave a Comment

President Joe Biden’s White House is opposing a plan that would prevent federal lands from being transformed into migrant camps housing illegal aliens released into the United States from the southern border.

In August, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) introduced H.R. 5283, named the “Protecting our Communities from Failure to Secure the Border Act,” to block the federal government from using federal lands to house illegal aliens.

This week, Biden issued a statement in opposition to Malliotakis’s legislation:

The administration strongly opposes H.R. 5283, which would prohibit the use of Federal funds to provide temporary shelter to certain noncitizens, including migrants seeking asylum, on Federal lands falling under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, or the Forest Service. [Emphasis added]

The administration opposes this legislation because it would significantly restrict the ability of the Department of the Interior and the Department of Agriculture to make decisions regarding the appropriate uses of their lands and resources, even in emergency or other situations. [Emphasis added]

Malliotakis’s legislation, which was approved by the House Natural Resources Committee in October, came as New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) and New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) got approval from the Biden administration to move hundreds, and potentially thousands, of border crossers and illegal aliens onto Floyd Bennett Field.

The historic, federally-owned airfield was used by the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy during World War II. Before then, the airfield was also used as New York City’s first municipal airport and has had famous guests visit it in prior decades, including Howard Hughes and Howdy Doody.

Today, Floyd Bennett Field serves as one of the largest open spaces in the city, which has made it ideal for biking, fishing, camping, and hiking for New Yorkers. The airfield is managed by the National Park Service and is surrounded by residential communities.

Charleston Republican just accomplished a mayoral victory that hasn’t happened since the 1870s: ‘The people have spoken’

November 22, 2023 by Chris Enloe Leave a Comment

For the first time in nearly 150 years, a Republican will serve as mayor of Charleston, South Carolina.

In a runoff election held on Tuesday, former South Carolina state Rep. William Cogswell (R) defeated incumbent Mayor John Tecklenburg (D) by 569 votes to become the first Republican to hold the office since the 19th Century. The races are technically nonpartisan.

The last Republican to serve as mayor of Charleston was George Cunningham from 1873 to 1877.

“The people have spoken and we’re ready for a new direction,” Cogswell declared after his unofficial victory, according to the Post and Courier.

“It’s time for a new generation of ideas and a new way of doing things,” he said. “It isn’t cast stones to the previous generation, we are the beneficiaries of a lot of hard work and talent of people that really love and care about their community. I am humbled to carry that baton forward. It’s a huge responsibility, one that I don’t take lightly but one that I am excited by.”

William Cogswell speaks from runoff election watch partywww.youtube.com

For his part, Tecklenburg graciously conceded the race and asked Charlestonians to support their new mayor.

“I ask each and every Charlestonian, everyone out there, to give him your support. Because starting tonight, when Mayor Cogswell succeeds, we all succeed,” Tecklenburg said.

The runoff came after Cogswell earned more votes than Tecklenburg on Election Day two weeks ago. But because neither candidate earned 50% of the vote — a third-party candidate snatched more than 18% total — the race went to a runoff. That result was a harbinger for Tuesday’s result because it “indicated a significant number of city voters were looking for a candidate other than Tecklenburg,” the Post and Courier explained.

The message of Cogswell’s winning campaign was simple: he promised to “put the needs of the local citizens first” through “smart growth,” “safe communities,” and “sound governance.”
